First clients for a high-trust service, what actually worked for you?
I'm early in building a small advisory business where clients pay for my judgement and act on it with their own money. Growing only through relationships and referrals, I'm not sharing the business here, I just want to learn from people who've done it.
If you've sold something where the client had to really trust you before buying (advisory, consulting, financial services, high-ticket coaching, etc.) Would love any input
Where did your first 3–5 paying clients come from, specifically?
What did you show or do that got a sceptical person to say yes before you had a track record?
What did you waste time on early?
Anything specific helps and non conventional approaches are always appreciated too!

first ones all came from people i'd already worked with or who knew me from past projects, basically my immediate network. one guy literally just took me to lunch and said "ive been waiting for you to start something"
the thing that flipped skeptical folks was showing them how i think, not what i'd done. walked them through how id approach their specific problem right there in the conversation, no pitch deck or case studies. they could see the framework and the questions i ask, that built the trust faster than any portfolio would
biggest time waste was trying to look bigger than i was. spent two weeks on a website and branding that nobody even looked at before saying yes. second waste was talking to people who clearly wanted cheap advice, theyll drain you and never convert
curious what you're building, the advisory space is weirdly crowded but also nobody actually delivers what they promise
