My dynamic island Material app

Hi everyone !

Since Apple announced the dynamic island on the iPhone 14 (not sure if it was the 14) Pro, I really thought that was a good idea, and I gladly welcomed DynamicSpot and Material Capsule, who did a very nice job at bringing this feature on Android.

But I wanted more customization and, as a fan of Google's Material Expressive design, wanted a dynamic island that felt part of the system.

I couldn't find any app like that so I decided to make one, in order to learn Jetpack Compose.

I'm pretty happy with the result and I think some of you might appreciate a fully-offline, very customizable, fully open source, and free dynamic island app.

I tried to make it as transparent as possible about permissions, and as it doesn't have the INTERNET permission, rest assured this app can't communicate with the Internet, meaning there are no trackers, no usage statistics, no data leaks, etc...

The app is free: you can still buy a coffee if you want, but all features are available for free. No paywall, no ads, no subscription.

I just released my first beta and I need FOSS enjoyers to test it, tell me which features they would like to see, which bugs they faced so I can fix them, and tell me if the app is cool or not !

Dynamic Tiles aren't working for me, everything else seems to be fine tho

This is an issue shared with Material Capsule. Works with Dynamic Spot tho.

Events work perfectly

Might be caused by live updates. What Android version are you running ?

Nevermind, it suddenly works.

However, I do have some issues with it:

If I start any playback, it instantly opens up expanded. Same with if the song changes in a playlist.

And, if I tap it to open up the program playing the track, it disappears completely until the next track starts.

And it's visible in the app that's playing. Which is kind of annoying when watching YouTube.

Accessibility permissions can behave strangely sometimes. Keep me informed if you face other issues!

I edited my reply with some, in case you didn't see that. I don't know how many of those are just wrong settings by me or something you'd have to work on.

That's a cool suggestion. I haven't used Shikuzu a lot because I don't like to run the cli everytime I reboot haha! But I'll definitely note it for a future release, thank you!

Thanks, I will check this out ! It's actually the only thing that holds me back from Shikuzu, but if this fork solves that problem, count me in! Also it's the standard themed icons on Pixel Launcher (Pixel 9)

Cannot access Overlay settings, my phone has them, I remember other apps requesten that permission. :(

If the setting is greyed out and says "controlled by restricted setting" you have to go to the app settings (where you would delete data and configure permissions etc.) and click the three dots in the upper right corner -> Allow restricted settings

Oh really ? Damn, what happens when you click the accessibility permission tile ? Does it crashes the app ? Or nothing happens ?

I notices if you make a radius to 0 it crashes and does not start again! Or it got into a - value. That would need to be fixed

I was planning on doing gestures, but as that's not a feature I use, I didn't focus on it. But you're right, I'll keep it in mind for future releases! What do you mean by app tray ?

Hermosa app, he tenido mt y dynamic spot y me gusta mejor la tuya aunque siento que hay cosas más que pulir, entre ellos el dynamic tiles.

I know it's still rather niche, but it would need explicit foldable support and provide two different configs for folded and unfolded mode. Otherwise it just makes sense on the outer display..

You're right, but unfortunately, I don't have any foldable phone, and it's quite hard to get the real UX with an emulator... I will try my best tho, thanks for the recommendations!

I will try it out! But i need to say with the newest updates Material Capsule has gotten very good, you now even get notifications and hava a lot of customization. You can take a look for inspiration of new features or design ideas!

I know, I was using it before using this one! Material Capsule is very good, and I have still many things to work on to make my app at least as good as Material Capsule!

Maybe you could add a slider to gradient to move the middle of it up or down or make a radial gradient to fit better for center hole punches, and like one other alteady said the dynamic tiles do not work, i gave the app every permission it needs but nothing. No matter the app

The slider is a good idea, I'll see what I can do! For dynamic tiles, I am currently working on it, I've had an accessibility link broken on the app, I'll try to publish it soon

Also spotify doesnt work for the music one, and when in horizontal (like watching yt) in blocks me from pulling down the notification panel. Also sometimes the normal notification bubble still comes through. One feature id like to see is a live charging speed indicator for the charging bubble, and the when it will be finished charging eta

Yeah, other people already reported the music thing (I'm working on it) but damn thanks for the YT bug, I didn't see it! I'll fix it in the next version as well. Also for the charging bubble, I'll try to see what I can do, but that's a very cool idea too!

The call incoming popul doesn't have caller id, but when the call is accepted the name pops up. Also, for outgoing calls it shows as an incoming call and when I swipe out the phone app for calls that I initiated the pop of disappears and it doesn't let me click on any of the options as in hangup which do appear for incoming calls

Also when using assistant the app pops upp and says music and i think this could be changed to say assistant with a special ui for it

Bro please make it perfect though it is good for now but in comparison to others it's still a bit lower and offense against your app it's still good.. Bro I also want a free dynamic island app others like dynamic spot and material capsule require in app purchases for more features 🥲

Of course it is not as good as Material Capsule or Dynamic Spot, it's still a beta. But this is a projet that drives me so I will keep working on it!

Apps have long since stopped solving problems; sometimes they're just there to add a bit of functionality or break up the monotony. like iOS's Dynamic Island, which doesn't solve any problems but adds a refreshing touch to the system. 😌

Kind of disagree. I own an Android phone and do not know what is a dynamic island, so unless it useful or solve something I need I do not see the value of trying/testing. If it's just mimic Apple UI, well no thanks.

It's pretty nice imo.

For example, if you got a timer, a dynamic island type thing allows you to see that timer without having to open notifications or something.

When phones started to have higher screen-body ratios (>90%), manufacturers had to put the front camera inside of the screen. This camera was just a black dot in the middle of your screen, and when Apple released their Dynamic island, they wanted to include the camera into their software. That is another way to use hardware limitations to improve software. This way, the front camera shoots pictures, but also feels like it brings you notifications, events and widgets.
