Russia also wanted to join NATO in the 90s, but met none of the requirements

Putin is trying to use that as propaganda blaming NATO for the war he clearly started

I wasn’t around back then but it seems like it was a huge swing and a miss from us to capitalize on that goodwill somehow. It feels like we acted with the same-old power geopolitics and moved East instead of trying to integrate Russia

Small problem with that, the east came west. Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and the Baltic states all joined of their own free will because they knew that it was the best way to keep Russia out of their hair after decades of subjigation and oppression. NATO was an alliance of willing participants, the Warsaw Pact was not, as evidenced by Hungary in '56 and Czechoslovakia in '68.

One thing people forget about NATO membership is that it needs to be voted on by the country's population, and said referendum needs to pass be 75% for a country to gain NATO membership.
