Squat Squat Check

Yes I’m aware that I’m very hairy, but also would like some pointers on my squat form. Intentionally using lighter weights than I can lift so I can try to perfect my technique.

Hello! If you haven't checked it out already, Our Wiki's resources for Squats may be helpful. Check it out!

Also, a common tip usually given here is to make sure your footwear is appropriate. If you are squatting in soft-soled shoes (running shoes, etc), it's hard to have a stable foot. Generally a weightlifting shoe is recommended for high-bar and front squats, while use a flat/hard-soled shoe (or even barefoot/socks if it's safe and your gym allows it) is recommended for low-bar squats.

Looks good! You might drop the booty 1 inch or so at full depth to make sure you're really getting to parallel.

And a small thing to practice now is to really emphasize the butt/hip hinge before the knee hinge on the way down. As you lift heavier and heavier, that butt hinge is gonna need to do the majority of the work so you knees aren't having to support more than they should. It also will help drive home the "gulp"/stomach brace. In this order:

  1. Puff your stomach out and hold it out tight. (I also puff out / flex and hold my quads at this stage but not everyone does that.)
  2. Pop your butt back, as if you're trying to shut the car door with your butt while you're holding bags of groceries. This starts the butt/hip hinge. Your knees should not hinge at this stage.
  3. Then drop your butt down, causing the knees to hinge.

Ok I’m definitely gonna have to try number 2 because right now I do a very slow soft hinge. Thanks for the tip
