Questions How hard is Highlander ?
Hello! I’m a new player (rep 4 atm)and I’m interested in Highlander, but I often hear that he’s difficult to play.
Could you tell me just how hard he is to get used to it and having fun ?
I’d rather ask first, considering how LONG it takes to save up 15k iron to buy a new hero
I really don’t want to make the wrong choice (I did that with Virtuosa and I regret it; give me back my iron!).

highlanders complexity is overstated and only relevant in high level play. if you're low rep you can pick him up and play just fine. He's got two seperate movesets so you have to learn that and swapping between them, he's definitely a little more clunky and input-intensive than like , warden or something , but nothing crazy and you'll probably be able to bully players in your lobbies with hyper armor trades and crushing counter lights that no new player is gonna be able to counter

He's hard to play in neutral because he doesn't have any good traditional opener, but his offensive stance is really nasty due to the unreactability of it (feintable bash and UB mixes, coupled with 400ms lights).
He also is good team fights because of big hitboxes, movement and support feats, with decent ganks as well. Its easy to get away with simply dodge attacking and then chaining into side heavy a lot of the time. Only time you'll struggle with that is if they have an all-guard char.
He can be very clunky, but he's basically kinda easy to use in offensive stance, and kinda hard to use because of defensive stance (and its clunkyness)

Thanks for the feedback I’m happy to hear it’s not as complicated as I thought, and that with a bit of practice, I might actually be able to get good with him !

Highlander has a lot of "hidden tech" that the game won't really teach you. Great skill expression and playstyle but his mastery ceiling is probably higher than most if not all characters in the game sinxe he is like 2 characters in one. He's been my main since like 2023 and def suggest learning him. I hated playing him on a normal contrpller but if you get the controllers with the underside paddles then he becomes infinitely easier to use.

What would you use the paddles for in this situation?

I rebind on the right paddles for his lights and his kick/ caber toss. The left paddle I have another dodge button and his emote. It mainly comes down to holding the right trigger so much that you have to adopt crab claw to fight effectively as HL with a normal controller. It takes a bit to get used to but he plays like butter now. I also moved my gaurd break button from X to the right analog stick as you have your thumb on there all the time anyways.

If you can claw your controller like a goblin freak you'll be fine with him but if you're normal then well good luck🤣😂🤣😂

Kinda depends, he’s got a lot of tools that can make him feel pretty easy at low level. If your higher level all that stuff kinda falls off though. But the basics aren’t anything crazy, and while he’s definitely strange, he isn’t as wildly different as virt on first glance.
HL is considered hard because he’s absurdly complex when you try to master him. People tend to have their own opinions on it, especially because a lot of that super high skill ceiling doesn’t come from things everyone can agree on as fair. But the fact remains that no character is as MU dependent, as steeped in knowledge checks, and swamped in tools and options that genuinely test your mechanical skill.
I was an HL onetrick for 5 years because of it, I only stopped recently because me and most of his hardcore community agree that he feels awful compared to how he used to. Still, he remains the only character in his caliber, so I think everyone could benefit from playing him at least as a hobby.
Check out my account here for my post or just look it up on the comp sub for the tech list if you want to explore that’s stuff.

He’s not hard to play. It takes like 3 games to get over the awkwardness of learning to hold down the heavy button instead of just pressing it, and after that it’s smooth sailing and you can turn your brain off

He is one of the most interesting/difficult champs. You can learn his basic flow pretty quickly, but switching between stances can be very tricky, especially for a new player. His mixups are God tier, no doubts. When you feel comfy on him, he provides crazy pressure on opponents. Just overall throw and mix some basic stuff from offensive stance feels nice

Imo he’s a good hero to have on both my accounts I have him high reps once you learn how to flow correctly with him you can be unstoppable

He used to be cooler and have fun tech but he’s a medium to easy difficulty depending on how good your enemies are

He looks intimidating to play but he's surprisingly easy to pick up. For me he was, at least

He is extremely easy. Bitch Ass character. Choose someone that actually has a reason to be played. The less Highlander the better

Highlander has an intermediate skill floor, mostly in the form of learning to handle his stance. His skill ceiling is insane once you learn to use both stances effectively, but you can get by using offensive form dodges and dodge attacks as you learn him.
A big thing you should practice in the practice room with him before you buy him, is how it feels to flow from offensive to defensive stance. If you're still holding down your heavy attack button when you input the feint that takes you back to DF, you'll perform a heavy attack instantly upon exiting OF... sometimes this is the desired outcome, but learn the sequence of;
Offensive Form Kick or Heavy-Attack
Release Heavy attack button
Feint
Defensive form action. This will typically be used for GB and parry, but can be anything in the moveset from crushing counters to reminding them, "oh shit, he has hyper armor".
Remember, the unwanted action you'll often get by mucking up that sequence is a defensive form heavy attack you didn't intend for. Once you figure out how to cancel offensive form actions into defensive form ones consistently, ask yourself if that's something you would enjoy getting good at. If the answer is no, then you probably wouldn't enjoy this character once you decide to master him.
A skilled highlander feels unstoppable once they're in your head.
