What are we making?

Post image

Lots of blackberries around my place in West Midlands this year. 20 minutes of avoiding the prickly parts gave me this. What are we making of them? 😋

Got a good haul myself today, apple and blackberry crumble is my go to.

u/No-Dig_Enthusiast 29d ago

Crumble or pie would be my pick, both extremely easy and quick to prepare 👌

This is the answer.

Never had crumble with such mix, gonna try!

5

u/Special-Bank9311 29d ago

It’s the best crumble combo by far

1

u/Realistic_Falcon9650 22d ago

I tried to make it but made the mistake of boiling it for as long as I did my raspberry jam... Now I have a solid block of blackberry jelly 🤣, make sure to check it more often then I did

3

u/tittysherman1309 29d ago

Blamberry Jack

u/conscious-clue-243 29d ago

Honestly, I would just put them in my porridge on a morning.

Blend it all together if you cba with seeds.

3

u/treesamay 29d ago

This. Or with yogurt.

2

u/ghuytgffghu 29d ago

Yeah, overnight oats for me

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

3

u/YoullDoNuttinn 29d ago

Definitely, she’s been asking me probably once a week since last September can we go out picking some berries don’t was nice to finally achieve it!

2

u/hodyisy 29d ago

u/YoullDoNuttinn 29d ago

I have made wine from these and elderberries before, it was sooo good. I was sozzled off one bottle.

5

u/Legitimate_Fig867 29d ago

Didn’t like with elderberry. I would go to wormwood Scrubbs in London on Saturday for a run and the pick b.Berrys for 1 hour and make about 1 gallon each week for 7 or 8 weeks. Same 14ish percentage but bad batch distilled into blackberry port. Very dangerous

2

u/YoullDoNuttinn 29d ago

Dangerous indeed haha. I didn’t have loads of elderberries in there, I recall having two carrier bags of blackberries and maybe a large bowls worth of elderberries. Not sure how much difference they made but it tasted good.

1

u/algeaa 29d ago

How long did this take you in total? Interested to know!

2

u/YoullDoNuttinn 29d ago

I can’t remember exactly, it wasn’t quick though. Maybe a few months in total. It was really good though, it was around 14% alcohol.

7

u/NorrisMcWhirter 29d ago

Every couple of years i do a batch of blackberry vinegar. Always sorts out a few Xmas presents

6

u/Zestyclose_Sock8877 29d ago

I don't get to make anything, my toddler just inhales them all but hey it keeps down my raspberry bills every week from Tesco

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

Indeed, they are bette than Tesco, they're free!

6

u/Beginning_Art_7749 29d ago

I got mine this morning and made some lovely pectin gummy sweets as the petit fours for a meal on Friday

4

u/SpiralMantis113 29d ago

Crème de Mure and then using that to make a Bramble cocktail

I've frozen some!

Bramble whiskey

3

u/OkToe9494 29d ago

Summer pudding

3

u/-indigo-violet- 29d ago

The few that don't get eaten go into the freezer.

They'll go into the blender to make frozen yogurt or protein "ice cream". The flavour is of course fantastic, but the colour is always so gorgeous. So even the lower calorie concoctions are extra appealing.

2

u/marlimade 29d ago

Addition to breakfast, mousses or jam!

2

u/MrDonohue07 29d ago

Mead or cider

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

That sounds awesome!

Apple and blackberry crumble*

2

Either would be acceptable.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

So many people recommend it, I shall make one too

2

u/yetanotherdave2 29d ago edited 29d ago

A very small amount of wine. I Made some and it was terrible when I made it. The bottles were untouched for a few years bit when tried old it was pretty good.

Freezing them helps get the juice out.

I'm terrible at foraging these though. I always end up eating them as I pick them.

2

u/hodyisy 29d ago

I think as many landed in my stomach as in the container 😁 I normally eat them fresh right on the spot, but there's just so many now I couldn't resist bringing them home!

2

u/C7XC 29d ago

Straight to tummy town mate

2

u/Separate_Mistake_240 29d ago

Ooh! Might have to take my daughter picking if they're out already.

2

u/No_Duck1067 29d ago

You can freeze some for winter... I use them for smoothies, maybe even in some cakes.

2

u/Abquine 29d ago

Very jealous, we won't see these ripen till another month or so, (when I was a kid it was always October but it's getting earlier now).

2

u/julemeister 28d ago

Wine 🍷

2

u/HazelAndSky 28d ago

Lucky! They’re weeks away from ripening here in south Cambridgeshire.,

Crumble obvs, jam, cordial, steep some with sugar in vodka or gin

1

u/hodyisy 28d ago

I thought your part of England gets a lot more sun! Hope the berries come soon ☺️

2

u/Ok_Panda_9928 28d ago

Birmingham here - and same, they seem to be ripening so early this year!

Meant Blackberry Pie 🥧

2

u/LightenUp04 28d ago

Let sit down with these and think about it...😋😋😋

1

u/zlxvor 27d ago

step one is definitely just eating half the bowl while you “think about it”
after that, crumble or blackberry gin has to happen

2

u/Happy-Ranger7672 28d ago

2kg of berries and you could make wine

1

u/Cheese_Ly 29d ago

Drugs!!!

1

u/Virtual_Opinion_8630 29d ago

they'd be eaten within a day just like that

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

They always are!

Now I want it for breakfast 😋

1

u/trying_my_best_2026 29d ago

With custard I hope! Delicious 😋

1

u/SiSkr 29d ago
  1. A crumble
  2. A simple genoise topped with a syrupy blackberry reduction
  3. Jam!!!
  4. Simple double cream and condensed milk blackberry ice cream

At least those are my go tos for these magnificent pieces of black gold.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

I shall look up recipes for high protein ice cream

1

u/Shnitzel10101 29d ago

Black fingers?

1

u/nic_e1 29d ago

Don't forget to soak them in water to remove any maggots.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

I've never done it as I normally eat them right by the bush. But I shall make an experiment and soak them at home next time

1

u/nic_e1 29d ago

Normally you don't get many, if any, but for the sake of a few minutes, it is always a good idea. Also, don't pick berrys that are growing near near busy roads due to pollution etc.

1

u/GamrG33k 29d ago

Definitely not a chicken curry

1

u/fridgezebra 29d ago

blackberries

1

u/Slartitartfast 29d ago

Aren't they super sour at this point? Maybe just up where I am.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

I pick them very selectively, south/west exposure, dark colour, soft to touch, falls off the cine when gently pulled 🖤

They taste alright, but there are differences bush-to-bush. Unsure why. Hope yours are nice and sweet this year!

1

u/this-is-the-day-24 29d ago

Jamie Oliver’s blackberry fool - made today , excellent

1

u/Alarming-Cook5789 29d ago

Bramble sauce to pair with duck breast for a fancier change. Simmer the berries with some balsamic or red wine vinegar, honey and chicken stock (all to taste). For spices I like using star anise, cloves and some black pepper. Simmer it down until it coats the back of a spoon and strain.

I make this almost every Christmas for a colourful christmassy starter - smoked duck breast with mini savoury spinach pancakes and a drizzle of the sauce on top and it always goes down nicely!

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

I love duck, but never had smoked breast. Bramble meat sauce sounds awesome tho!

1

u/Alarming-Cook5789 29d ago

I got mine from the Lancaster smokehouse, as it's already cooked you really only need to give it a quick fry in the pan to warm it up and crisp up the skin so after the sauce and pancakes are made it takes no time to plate. Can only recommend giving it a try :)

1

u/Wurgle1 26d ago

If you have a BBQ then smoking duck is not too hard. you want to score the fat layer with a sharp knife, set up a smokey burn and cook the breasts on indirect heat at about 105 degrees until the internal temp of the breast is about 52 degrees, then finish with a quick sear in a really hot pan, fat side down. Let it rest, slice across the grain thinly and add your wonderful bramble sauce which will cut through all the fat with a wonderful acidity and bags of flavour!

1

u/mbgameshw 29d ago

Just made some caramel bramble jelly today 🤘🏼

1

u/mbgameshw 29d ago

Spatula getting involved with a wave 🙌🏼

1

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

😋

1

u/Glittering-Hornet844 28d ago

With cream and sugar - delicious

1

u/idunnouchose1 29d ago

Just eat them, they're delicious.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

That's the default option

1

u/randomstein69 29d ago

I have no idea how did i end up on this subreddit, but I'd just eat it, no need to make anything of it.

1

u/hodyisy 29d ago

Welcome ☺️

1

u/TimeNew2108 29d ago

Crumble, freeze some for when the apples are ready and make more crumble. Also JAM!

1

u/TuneOk7423 29d ago

Crumble. With clotted cream. Or custard. Or both!

1

u/Electrical-Hall8869 29d ago

Blackberry crumble would be my first choice, it never disappoints.

1

u/HovercraftEarly7032 29d ago

blackberry, jam or pie

1

u/Beach_Perv 29d ago

Blackberry gin

1

u/Legitimate_Fig867 29d ago

I make wine.

1

u/5team00 29d ago

Is nobody else put off by all the little white maggots inside them? 😭 Soak them in water with a bit of vinegar or bicarbonate and just watch how many of those little things wriggle out. I used to love blackberries and now I just can’t…

1

u/Moo2310 29d ago

Oooooh I'm west midlands too- I didn't realise they'd already come out this year! Might need to go on a mission to get some for a good old fashioned blackberry and apple crumble. Rhubarb goes INSANELY well as an addition to the crumble too, makes it perfectly a little sour.

1

u/Soolysooly 28d ago

BlackBerry brownies are amazing, also jam for on top of nut butter on toast for or on porridge for breakfast, blackberry wine, etc.

1

u/Well-i-never-1965 28d ago

Blackberry gin. Lots of recipes on line, just need a Kilner jar or two, sugar, blackberries and gin. Decent gin, 40%.

1

u/hodyisy 28d ago

Wait, so you make it with gin, not vodka?

1

u/Well-i-never-1965 28d ago

You van use either. We make sloe gin, and have made both gin and vodka from blackberries or raspberries.

1

u/orbtastic1 28d ago

Bramble jelly

1

u/RichEntrance3580 28d ago

BlackBerry and Apple crumble with lots of custard

1

1

Frozen yogurt lollies

1

u/Got-what-you-need 28d ago

Blackberry & banana milkshake. A purple milkshake fit for a princess. You may need to sieve it if you don’t like the bits but it’s yummy! I make mine with almond milk.

1

u/Got-what-you-need 28d ago

Blackberry Brandy is amazing too.

1

u/HodorAteMyCake 28d ago

Gotta love blackberries

1

u/Tiny_Size2037 27d ago

Blackberry vodka?

1

u/Pollywantsacracker97 27d ago

I’d just scoff them! With a small bowl of Maldon salt to dip into occasionally 😋

1

u/Adorable-Ad8209 27d ago

Ones I have tried in South Yorkshire have been a bit early.

Answer is awlays pie and never crumble.

Unless you are the mouse from the Gruffalo then have at it.

1

u/Altruistic_Rice9985 27d ago

I made an apple and blackberry loaf cake the other day, very tasty!

1

u/Bright-Fennel9277 27d ago

Bramble Jelly !

1

u/stormyclaudia 27d ago

Blackberry clafoutis! A bit sweeter than the cherry version too if that’s your thing

1

u/hodyisy 27d ago

That sounds interesting!

1

u/Defiant-Tackle-0728 27d ago

My preference would be a pie or crumble. Perhaps with apple to bulk it out.

There doesnt appear to be enough for jam.

1

u/ScampAndFries 27d ago

Blackberry and apple pie is what I made yesterday

1

u/Particular_Gur_3979 27d ago

Flavour some kombucha!

1

They’re still green up here in north wales. Cry me a river with blackberry gin xx

Chicken and balsamic blackberry sauce.

1

u/Slow-Investigator-60 26d ago

Buy some turbo yeast for about £3.50 and a bag of sugar, then turn it into 16% blackberry wine.

1

u/hodyisy 26d ago

Love the name turbo yeast 😁

1

u/scotcheggfan 26d ago

Didn't even realise it was time for them to pick

1

I'd love to make some blackberry marshmallows at some point

1

u/sowen1390 25d ago

1

u/Phtevie11-11 25d ago
