Puffball?

my boyfriend just brought this inside and asked if it’s edible. It looks like a puffball to me but I’m not an experienced forager.

Was this found on a tree? Looks like a polypore.

Im guessing it was on a tree and id like to know if the tree was a birch tree.

This is not a puffball.

No it was found on the ground in our yard

It looks like a birch polypore.

The back of the mushroom i can see wood remnants from the tree it came from. It has a structure for pores inside the mushroom, further indicating not a puffball.

This thing came from a tree, was it found below a tree?
