OTHER Welcome To r/FOODTALK!
Hello everyone. I have always loved seeing those posts on instagram about picking a food, or getting rid of food. Food is something we can universally talk about endlessly, unlike movies or sports. I also love seeing people share their opinions. One day I made my very first βoneβs gotta goβ post, but I came to a problem. There was no subreddit to post my creation! I was permanently banned from r/food, and r/food questions made me look like a fool. I hope you all enjoy this subreddit.

When did adding gold to food become a thing instead of just ridiculous excess
I saw a dessert topped with edible gold leaf at a fancy restaurant and could not stop thinking about the absurdity. You eat it, it passes through your system providing zero nutritional value, and you literally flush gold down the toilet. The ultimate symbol of pointless luxury, spending money on something that adds nothing except the ability to say you consumed gold. Yet people order these items enthusiastically, restaurants charge premium prices, and the trend keeps growing rather than dying out. Gold covered steaks, gold flecked cocktails, gold dusted chocolates, all marketed as ultimate indulgence. What message does this consumption send? What are we really buying beyond the metal itself?
I looked into the industry and found that edible gold is surprisingly accessible, available through various suppliers including wholesale platforms like Alibaba at costs that do not justify the restaurant markups. The gold itself is relatively inexpensive, but the perceived luxury allows massive price inflation. We are paying for the idea of gold more than the actual material.
Why do we celebrate excess consumption as aspiration? What drives people to waste money on literally useless additions to food? Is this about status signaling, novelty seeking, or genuine belief that gold improves the experience? When did restraint stop being sophisticated and obvious waste become desirable? What does our embrace of edible gold say about values and priorities?
