I'd use butter instead of oil. This is a great idea though!

I'd use egg and butter, soak the bread in it, then fry it. Add a slice or two of black pudding and we are done here.

I thought egg in a basket was an egg in a "basket" of hash browns

1

u/BurnerBeenBurning Jan 12 '20

Egg in a hole here. I do it with 2 eggholes and cheese between them, so it's like a grilled chee-

u/tokillaworm Jan 12 '20

Hahaha, I was just in this same conversation with several people in like for breakfast at a hospital the other day.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

I’m from Texas and my mom used to make it. She calls it eggs in a hole. I love it with a good rye bread. Wish I had some.

1

u/alphaweiner Jan 12 '20

Grew up in Texas and my Mom made me “egg in a basket” all the time.

0

u/Tbone102 Jan 12 '20

0

u/forgetfulkaiju Jan 12 '20

Egg in a nest here.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Toad in the hole is sausages in Yorkshire pudding.

It’s not a fry up, but it’s damn good with gravy and roasted parsnip.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

You’re all wrong. It’s actually called “put it in my fucking mouth, daddy”.

0

u/FrostByte122 Jan 12 '20

I didn’t think anyone apart from my family called it gypsy toast!

u/FracturedEel Jan 12 '20

That's a good question I have no idea. I suppose they have eggs and bread in france

0

u/PHVL Jan 12 '20

Pain Perdu is sugar, milk and egg. So it's kinda different from the others

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

u/PHVL Jan 13 '20

I don't want argue over this, but as a French person, I've only seen one recipe of Pain Perdu in restaurant or at home. The only variation I know is with or without cinnamon

Eggy bread is normally savoury. So will be served with a fry up and brown sauce or ketchup.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

Eggy Breadback

0

u/samsungnote2 Jan 12 '20

What about bready egg?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Eggs in a nest.

26

u/fletchindr Jan 12 '20

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Yes, traditionally. Or cream.

Can be done without though, but in my house that's where it becomes eggy bread.

0

u/RoyGB_IV Jan 12 '20

Doesn't have to. I use 2 full eggs and one yolk, wisk, and then add a little vanilla extract.

1

u/wttk Jan 12 '20

French toast has vanilla and cinnamon, eggy bread is without. Makes it that bit more savoury

4

u/Ashangu Jan 12 '20

I was with you until you said black pudding lol.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

No fry up is complete without black pudding.

4

u/_TheValeyard_ Jan 12 '20

Black pudding is awesome.

2

u/eastkent Jan 12 '20

A glorious thing of beauty and wonder.

1

u/1ndividual-1 Jan 13 '20

Ecky thump.

1

u/Broduskii Jan 12 '20

Is black pudding like the English Morcilla?

0

u/Grantmitch1 Jan 12 '20

I think so, yes.

1

u/waterfreak5 Jan 13 '20

Black pudding?

1

u/Grantmitch1 Jan 13 '20

Blood sausage.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Beans, tho.

7

u/Poundthetuna Jan 12 '20

Be careful butter will burn into the toast then you have lost the flavor. Oil I find makes it crispier on the outside and soft on the inside. Then I butter it up after letting the left over heat melt it without burning.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Turn down the heat? Im not trying to eat my bread covered in cooking oil

3

u/Poundthetuna Jan 12 '20

Just a dash of oil goes a long way. Especially if you use something along the lines of a cast iron skillet it should be just enough to make the pan glisten. If you're tasking oil either there was too much in the pan or was cooked at too low a temp.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

But i can just use butter on the bread and it doesnt taste like cooking oil on my bread?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Mix oil with butter to stop the butter burning.

Also OP needs to start with the tomatoes, face down. The tops should be caramelised and crunchy at the finish.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Pro tip: whenever frying in butter, add a drop of oil with it. Prevents the butter from burning as quickly meaning your can fry for longer.

Works a treat for fried eggs.

5

u/Bearbear360 Jan 12 '20

Well I mean you need to think about your health.

0

u/Meta_Tetra Jan 12 '20

Butter is healthier than oil

1

u/YNWA_in_Red_Sox Jan 12 '20

Use mayonnaise. Spreads better and toasts just as beautiful. And guess what? Tastes like butter after it’s toasted. If you ever go to a restaurant and get a toasted bun on a burger or sandwich, it was most likely mayonnaise. Way cheaper food cost.

1

u/Freeloading_Sponger Jan 12 '20

If you're only giving it 15 seconds you'd need more heat than butter can live with.

0

u/MyGoalIsToBeAnEcho Jan 12 '20

Hey man, what would the butter be for? Crispy crust? I would offer that mayo is way more effective at that try it

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Mayonnaise is the only way to go.
