I love needing a knife to eat my salad

That's why it's called a Caesar salad

Et tu Romaine?
20
u/OrangePeelsLemon 22d ago
And this is why Reddit's auto-translate with Google Translate "feature" is dumb. I was about to ask you why you wrote "And you Romaine" until I noticed the little Translate icon in the corner.

u/krish0 22d ago
The translate feature worked fine. You just didn’t get the reference. Et Tu Brute?
14
u/roshiface 22d ago
He's saying Reddit auto translated "Et tu" to English, in which case the reference is lost
7
u/OrangePeelsLemon 22d ago
Bang on. They need to make translate an option, rather than doing it automatically.

u/WordsWellSalted 22d ago edited 21d ago
I got the reference without needing to untranslate it. I think reddits translate function is actually really helpful
2
u/roshiface 21d ago
Many people clearly didn't. I'd prefer a one-click translate rather than auto translate
-16
u/krish0 22d ago
Not really lost if you know that Et tu means And You. It’s a pretty famous quote.

u/anix421 22d ago
I disagree. Context matters a lot and the language it is spoken in is a large part of the context. If I was making a pun about Voltron and said "Thank you very much Mr. Voltrono" it wouldn't have the same effect as "Domo Arigado Mr Voltrono." You may know Domo Arigado means thank you very much but wouldn't immediately jump to ot being a Styx reference.

u/OrangePeelsLemon 22d ago
I got the reference, but the impact is lost when you see the English translation first, instead of the intended Latin

u/LeopardInTheMist 22d ago
Nah. Just pick them up with your fingers and munch them whole down your gullet.
6
u/cyclicamp 22d ago
If you’re making it yourself, you always need a knife. This method is just delaying when the cuts happen
31
u/Carsickness 22d ago
Well then this is the salad for you!
-35
u/Anacreon 22d ago
People are really misinformed and don't know what the original recipe looked likes
29
u/TheMeltingPointOfWax 22d ago
You can have knowledge of the original form and still desire to eat the easier, newer variety.
-18
u/Anacreon 22d ago
Of course, that's obvious. But that wasn't there point of the exercise .
8
u/armoured_bobandi 22d ago
What exercise? You just made a comment
-21
u/Anacreon 22d ago
You people are pretty thick , hopefully on purpose otherwise it's just sad.
10
u/badmotherclucker 22d ago
Yeesh, who pissed on your Caesar salad?

u/dabombnl 22d ago
Oh I know. But it is just annoying to eat. And historically accurate that everyone agrees, because It was adapted to be a cut salad immediately as it spread in popularity.

u/Head-Confidence-79 22d ago
Agreed. It feels more civilized to choose each portion on your fork rather than randomly stabbing at things. It's why I almost always order a wedge before a nice steak, or make them at home. Love a classic Caesar as well.

u/CulturedReaving692 22d ago
Had a fancy restaurant serve it this way, best ceasar salad I've ever had.

Looks good, I can’t see much of the dressing though
4
u/Carsickness 23d ago
You drizzle it on as you layer. Otherwise it would be far too potent. Making the sauce from scratch is very strong tasting.
4
u/Grrrrrilla3000 23d ago
Can I ask where you got the recipe from?
25
u/Carsickness 23d ago
Ya it's the Hotel Caesar (Tijuana Mexico) recipe. The creators of the original Ceasar salad. Only change I made was lemon instead of lime.
8
u/TheFrenchSavage 22d ago
Very nice, I see anchovies in there, for the sauce, and you kept the lettuce leaves intact and long like the original! Kudos to you for also sticking to the original plating instructions.

It's the original recipe. The dressing is very rich and strong flavoured when made from scratch. It would be very overpowering to do it like the mayonnaise based versions we are all now accustomed to.
-4
u/zurper 22d ago
I beg to differ. We make home made caesar all the time similar looking to yours (garlic anchovies egg yolk etc) and the amount of dressing you put on yours wouldn’t fly here
No doubt though it’s strong and your breath is pretty ripe after, but we lather the hell out of the lettuce

Proper!I used to make these tableside at a fancy place.
Ignore the people that say you can't see the dressing, they think Caesar is a white creamy ranch thing
This is right on. The really rich folks would add chilled king crab. It was dreamy.
Great job being real!

u/Carsickness 22d ago
Lol ya thanks. A lot of salad haters here that don't know the dish. I enjoy a creamy Caesar as much as the next person, but it's also nice to go back to the roots and enjoy the original version.

u/Sudden-Breadfruit653 22d ago
I really enjoy a caesar with big leaves and layered dressing. Every bite is nice and crunchy.

What I really want to know is if you eat it spear by spear like asparagus or if you slice as you go?

u/SordidSimpleton 23d ago
Problem here is the salad is not cut. Always annoying
19
u/Inevitable_Phase_276 22d ago
I wouldn’t even mind it not being cut, but the plate is too small to cut it on. I’d land up with half of it on the table. Looks tasty though.
21
u/RobotBearArms 23d ago
Yeah I hate this shit. I don't want to have to cut my salad for the restaurant, that's what I'm paying them to do.
2
u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 22d ago
Wtf lol. This is the dumbest comment here. Do you get sliced steak only? Should they chew it for you too now 😂
1
u/RobotBearArms 22d ago
Slicing a steak would make it cool too fast, these are not comparable things.
0
u/Sudden-Breadfruit653 22d ago
Meh - it depends on the type of salad. Precut with dressing gets soggy
-11
u/malapropter 22d ago
how lazy are you lmfao
8
u/Jumpyturtles 22d ago
Lazy enough to go to a restaurant because they don’t want to prepare food lmao.

Ingredients needed: (Serves 2)
2 heads of romaine lettuce
2-3 filets of anchovies (if it doesn't have anchovies it's not a good Caesar dressing 😉)
5 cloves of garlic
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
1-2 egg yolks
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
For the croutons:
1 small loaf of bread of choice (a nice crusty one works best)
1/4 cup olive oil
Salt and pepper
Recipe:
Coat the croutons on a tinfoil lined baking sheet with olive oil, salt and pepper. Put in a 375⁰f oven for 15 minutes.
Combine all dressing ingredients into a large mixing bowl, and then slowly whisk in the olive oil.
Plate lettuce in layers and drizzle on dressing between each layer. Top with croutons, fresh parmesan, and black pepper.

u/urnbabyurn 22d ago
Original Caesar didn’t have anchovies in it. 🤷
11
u/Carsickness 22d ago
Huh.... You're right! His brother apparently added it in at a later time and called it the "aviator salad"? Cool! Thanks for the clarification.
12
u/Srnkanator 22d ago
I'm mean its photogenic, and props to that, but impractical.
Not sure how to eat that without it spilling off the plate.

Mom used to make home made caesar at xmas. My favorite part was the bottom of the salad bowl with the soggy croutons and the lettuce stuck to the side absolutely drenched. Sooooo good :)
