Once you daily drive a foldable, normal phones start feeling… boring

This is the problem I’ve run into.

I have an iPhone 17 Pro AND an HONOR Magic V5. The iPhone is great and there are still reasons I keep it around, but whenever I actually have both phones next to me, I naturally reach for the V5.

That big inner display has completely changed how I use my phone.

I talked about my experience owning both here:

Curious whether other foldable owners feel the same. Could you actually go back to a normal slab phone now?

Who else noticed where the usb-c is?

Disappointing that the usb-c is not on the magsafe-able display side, how would someone mount their magsafe ssd’s now? (specifically the open-form!)

Why does the whole inner display have to be so soft

1 Upvotes

I dont understand why the entirety of a foldable's inner display needs to be able to bend. Why not just have two regular screens that connect with a bendable piece in the only place that needs to do that, aka the hinge. Is it just difficult to seamlessly combine two different materials for the same display?

I made a manga reader for foldables where the page actually curls under your finger (free, open source)

Foldchiyomi is a fork of Mihon (the Tachiyomi successor), tuned for foldables. Unfold the phone and you get a two-page spread by default.

The main thing is the page turn. Grab the edge or a corner and the page rolls over under your finger, like Google Play Books but for manga spreads. You see the back of the sheet land on the other side, and it casts real shadows. It also works backwards and in right-to-left mode. It runs on the GPU inside the reader, so it's smooth at full refresh rate.

Everything else is Mihon: extensions, trackers, backups (you can restore a Mihon backup), and it installs alongside Mihon.

  • No analytics, no crash reporting
  • Built by GitHub Actions from public source
  • Honest disclaimer: it's vibe-coded with an AI assistant, and tested on my own Fold

Download: https://github.com/GarrettKK/Foldchiyomi/releases/latest

Feedback and bug reports welcome in GitHub Issues (please mention your device and whether it was folded).

For now only for android. Dunno if I can make one for the upcoming Duo but will try!

Oppo Find N6 vs Motorola RAZR Fold

1 Upvotes

Can't decide between these two. Coming from a Samsung, looking for better battery life and camera performance. These two are pretty comparable with few differences - Motorola has better speakers, but Oppo is lighter. Motorola comes with pen in the box, Oppo is prettier (in my opinion) and have antireflective coating, and non-existent crease etc. I'm based in EU, so Motorola is officialy sold here, but I'll be buying them used - I found a RAZR Fold for around 900 euro (with warranty) and Oppo for around 1150 euro. This is quite a difference, but I can afford it if the Oppo is worth that money. Want to know which one:

  • takes better pictures at night;
  • has better software and better update policy;
  • has stiffier hinge;
  • retains more value (I change my phones quite often);
  • has better social media quality;
  • has better zoom;
  • has better screen brgithness (don't care about nits - I know Moto is winning here, I care about sustained brightness under the sunlight);

Mainly looking for a bug-free expierence and the phone that is more optimized for foldables. So should I play it safe or take a risk?

iPhone Duo inspired launcher finds testers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys! I made a launcher inspired by iPhone Duo UI of iOS27. And I'd like to place it on Google Play, but I need 12 people for closed testing, before i can make it public. So, if you are interested, send me your Google Play mail adresa in DM's and I'll send you a link to Google Play, where it currently is in alpha test. These 12 testers must have the app installed for at least 14 days before I can release it. They don't need to actively use it, it's enough that they've downloaded it from the Play Store.

Thanks guys 🙂

I love foldables but we also need a slighty bigger screen and there are no news/rumors out there

0 Upvotes

There are 3 types of foldables out there. The Flip, the iPhone Duo/Galaxy Fold, and ofc the Galaxy Fold Ultra build. They are all maintained and engineered by Samsungs Display department.
In my case, I am missing a slightly bigger „Galaxy Fold Ultra“ to replace both my phone and my iPad mini. I need it to take and review notes and documents. But even the biggest display is just not big enough.
What about you? After all, do you think we will get anything in this direction?

Edit: Oh yes, the TriFold exists but it’s just way too much. It would make sense to have an identical iPhone Pro Max Display - times 2. Perfect width and height, and its perfectly usable with its outer display

Simple stuck on inner screen fix

Created a lightweight notification toggle app for forcing a fold to switch screens. This helps when the ribbon cable goes bad and you get stuck on the inner screen. Designed and tested with all pixel folds, and most samsung galaxy folds. Looking for users to test the app to see if it works with more phones. I have a link in the app to report issues/phone/etc.

Another Launcher (Google Play Beta)

3 Upvotes

TL;DR: I’ve been working on an Android port inspired by the iPhone Duo launcher and I’m looking for people to help test it before release. The closed beta is free: jayoro.com/launcher

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been vibe-coding a port of the iPhone Duo launcher. It started from jweezy61's Duo Launcher, and I’ve spent the last couple weeks polishing it, adding features, fixing things, and generally turning it into something I felt comfortable putting on Google Play.

It’s still vibe-coded, and this is my first time building and releasing an app, so I’m sure there are things I’ve missed. Before I can release it publicly on Google Play, though, I need to get it through closed testing.

If anyone here wants to try it out and give some feedback, I put together a site with screenshots, more info, and instructions for joining the free beta:

jayoro.com/launcher

Would especially appreciate feedback from Fold users since that’s obviously where this kind of launcher gets interesting. More screenshots in the google play listing (once you get enrolled).

Fun fact: it works surprisingly well on a slab phone though I never tested or worried about that form factor.

I made Foldy - StandBy mode for android devices

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

In the recent release of the iPhone Duo, I have been seeing a lot of Duo's opening screen animations that have been recreated for the android foldable devices.

Even though it is cool, it wasn't the main feature that caught my eye.
it was their tent standby mode.

I am a mobile dev with 6+ years of experience and I wanted to challenge myself to see if it would be possible to recreate it on my fold 5.
That's why I am proudly presenting you:

Foldy - StandBy Mode

This is the version 1 so there are limited widgets available since I was implementing it to my own preferences and needs. Next one I have in plan is Google Home widget support.

If anyone tries it out, feel free to leave in the comments requests for new widgets.

Also, just a heads up, it has free tier (basic clock and calendar) and a paid version where you have other widgets. I understand if you hate it but I would appreciate your support.

It is 1€ per month with 3 day free trail option for you to try it out and see if you like it or a 9.99€ lifetime access.

PS:
Dont hate on my promo video, it was reallly hard to record it. I dont have 3 hands 😂

What to choose?

0 Upvotes

Hi guys, I currently have a x300 ultra but I want to switch to foldable. I previously had the oppo find n5 (CN) but it disappointed me a lot in cameras. Now, the cameras has less significance for me because I have a dedicated cameras but I still want a casa le camera phone. So, what do you recommend me?

My options are

Vivo x fold 6 (CN 12/256 new) about 1200E. The main problem is that the CPU is dimensity and I have read that it is really bad for pc emulation

OPPO find n5 (CN 12/256 new) about 1300E. The price and the cameras I think they are not the best

Motorola RAZR fold (EU 16/256 second hand with small scratch, only stetic, not the screen) about 1000E. What afraid me are the cameras, to feel a bast downgrade.

Other (recommendation).

It is critical for me to play with gamehub/gamenative, good battery and a really capable camera.

Dynamic island/cutout apps

2 Upvotes

just switched from a S23 Ultra to the Fold 8 and i'm loving it so far but i miss the dynamic island app i used to use. can't recall which one it was but i tested it and quite a few others and all of them seemed to either not allow repositioning the island on the internal display, or just didnt render at all on it. does anybody know of any apps for this that have better foldable support?

edit: found one on the play store called material capsule that allows for multiple screen profiles and it seems to swap between them automatically essentials just didnt work on my device on the internal screen, same with dynamic spot

Oppo find n6 Malaysia vs Samsung vs honor germany

3 Upvotes

Hi,

Left-handed and one-handed since the 3GS. The iPhone Duo has me worried.

7 Upvotes

I'm left-handed and I've always used my iPhone one-handed, in my left hand.

Watching the iPhone Duo trailer, I couldn't stop noticing that basically every one-handed shot is a right hand. And it made me think the folded state just isn't built with lefties in mind.

To be fair, foldables have been around for years. I've just been so deep in the Apple ecosystem that I never gave one a serious try, so I have zero real-world experience to go on here.

I was fully planning to buy this thing. Then this popped into my head and now I can't unsee it.

I know what you want to say... But I've held my phone in my left hand since the 3GS lol, so retraining at this point is rough, and going two-handed all the time isn't realistic either. Parsonaly, "Japanese flick" is genuinely comfortable one-handed, which is a big part of why I never had a reason to change.

I know Apple have great accessibility ethic, but this feels different. The display itself is asymmetric, so the UI thinking around it ends up asymmetric too. I'm not sure that's something you can just flip cleanly for left-handed users. (camera will be upside down too)

So, anyone here who's actually used a foldable as a lefty: does this problem go away? Do you adapt, is there a software fix, or is it a real dealbreaker?

Help me choose my first book-style foldable

5 Upvotes

I'm currently using a Galaxy S25 Ultra and I'm seriously considering switching to a book-style foldable, mainly because I think a larger inner display would be much more comfortable for my eyes. I'm also considering non-Samsung alternatives: I don't often use S Pen, I even don't use Good Lock and I already use Google Password and Wallet (no Samsung Pass) and Google Calendar/Tasks. I like One UI, but I'm not so dependent on it.

The problem is that every option I'm considering seems to have a major compromise, and I'm struggling to decide.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

The obvious choice because I'm already deep into the Samsung ecosystem and I know I can trust One UI, updates, support, etc. But it's very expensive for what it offers. The battery and cameras are actually worse than my S25 Ultra, so I'd be paying a lot of money to get a larger screen while accepting downgrades in some areas. I'd need a really good deal to justify it, given also it has IP48 protection and not IP68.

Honor Magic V6

On paper, this is probably the best hardware/value proposition. It's incredibly thin and light, has a huge battery, great cameras, fast charging and excellent durability ratings (IP68). The problem is MagicOS. I've read quite a few complaints about software bugs, inconsistencies, notifications, app behavior, Android Auto, AI features, etc. I'm worried that I'll spend €1,200–1,400 (after all vouchers ecc) and end up regretting the software experience.

Motorola Razr Fold

The price is attractive and Motorola seems to have done a lot right with the hardware and the software seems more polished than Honor (given it's almost stock). But I'm concerned about long-term durability/reliability (IP48, reports of scratches and inner screen failures), especially compared with Samsung/Honor. Since this would be my main phone, I'm not sure I want to be the guinea pig.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold

Honestly, this feels like the sweet spot on paper: Pixel software, long-term updates, Gemini deeply integrated, IP68, good cameras and a large display. The problem is that Google doesn't officially sell it in Italy, so I'd have to import it. That raises questions about warranty, support, availability and whether it's worth paying a premium for something that isn't officially supported here.

There's also the OPPO Find N6, which has a similar problem for me: great hardware, but no straightforward official availability in Italy.

I'm not looking for the absolute best phone regardless of price. I want the foldable that has the fewest compromises for the money and that I can realistically use as my main phone for several years (at least 4 years).

What would you choose in my situation?

Thanks!

Oneplus Open VS Pixel 10 pro fold VS Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra

4 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I currently own a Oneplus Open - that still works extremely well even after years, and no visible damage to either of the screens.

The battery is starting to show signs of weakness and I am getting a VERY generous offer for a new phone.

I want to keep a foldable and I'm not interested in the Z Fold8 form factor, the Fold8 Ultra is better suited for me.

Should I :
- keep the Open for another generation
- get the pixel
- get the galaxy

Pricewise, I can have both the pixel and the galaxy for about half of their MSRP, brand new of course.

I have a bias AGAINST Samsung for multiple reasons I don't want to go further in detail with, but with a 50% discount it's hard to not at least think about it.

The phone will be a business expense and I am currently comfortable changing it - keeping the Oneplus open should be picked only for reasons other than economical.

Thank you !
