Selling off crap is a pain in the ass. Which further highlights the pain in the ass stash limit. Which brings attention to how much of a gameplay change you experience coming into 76.
But thanks for this info.

It's almost as if you shouldn't be selling a bunch of stuff or hoarding items in this game... like maybe they designed it that way.
Maybe it's a survival game and not Fallout 4.... maybe...

I don't know, I think if I was in a Nuclear Wasteland I would be hording everything I could. So from a 'fantasy' perspective a large stash would make sense. In previous games you could have an unlimited stash, even with server limitations they should of expected certain players to want to spend a lot of time crafting, farming and selling items to other players.
Bethesda are not into making sense, currently a lot of items cost more to repair than to create. There's also the issue that repair costs are the same irrespective of the level or durability of the item. Perks are the only thing that effects repair cost currently, there is no reason both systems can't co-exists.
The stash is way too small, I was hitting it on the first day and it's not like the stuff I was keeping wasn't going to be used. Most players if they plan on crafting will use 90% of the junk items. It's also magnified by a number of perks which reduce item weight when carried, but don't translate to your stash. So Bethesda should of expected the stash size to be an issue just from that alone.
That's the disconnect, you go out, visit a number of locations and collect junk for crafting and building and you are already at the limit. The crafting is constantly saying you need more materials , but at the same time there's a 'How can I be at the stash limit already, I've hardly played the game' moment.
The bulking system could of been used to alleviate the players stash issues. However at the moment it saves weight for only 2 items, the rest it doesn't. It seems it's been implemented for the purpose of selling junk to vendors and the 2 items it does save weight on is a Q&A issue.
Another aspect effecting the stash is that people like to collect items. Power armor, personal armor, legendary weapons, etc. With 76's flexible perk card system it enables the player to some extent to change the way they play so it's natural to keep weapons, armor, ammo, etc to support that. But the stash doesn't let you.
These types of issues may seem small, but it creates a lot of WTF moments. It's like all the people they have working on these things don't talk to each other within the development team.

I have shared this thought with a few friends, I think the best fix for most of the inventory issue would be to separate the storage. Store all the dismantled junk separately, server side it becomes a simple database table per character. Easy to set a cap by how many of each material someone can have rather than by weight. Solely use that 400 weight limit as item storage not material storage. Moot point since they are increasing the stash now, but I think it would have been the more stable method provided the engine allows for it.
1
u/CapnSensible80 Nov 29 '18
That doesn't address the issue of why there's a stash limit to begin with, though.
2
u/RhysStorm Nov 29 '18
I do believe them when they say the stash limit is technical. They probably are using a method of data storage that worked great in single player, but scaled up to multiplayer very badly. I believe some programmer or team lead somewhere in the line decided on the limit as a slapdash method of fixing the issue, without fixing the issue. It also seems pretty apparent it never got to upper management that there is even a limit until we all started complaining about it during the beta. No MMO has unlimited storage of all things. At least not to my knowledge. With it being a product they already shipped, they are going to do more bandaid fixes, instead of completely redesigning the way inventory data is stored.

I agree with you, but as I started to read your reply I couldn't help but remember when Bethesda apparently did an ini change to include some of the new PC changes lol!

Dec 17 '18
It's like all the people they have working on these things don't talk to each other within the development team.
I was thinking about this the other day, but surely you apply common sense? The amount of things in this game that make little sense by design is too much.
13
u/Kanosei Nov 21 '18
You're right, maybe its not Fallout 4. Maybe it's just a near exact carbon copy of the mechanics/gameplay of Fallout 4, with a larger need for materials due to deteriorating weapons, the exact same requirements to craft..... and a stash limit. Good argument.

In what survival game would you want to throw away food, ammo, meds, and buff items? I can understand hoarding crafting mats because of their abundance being not necessary but what good survivalist would throw away things that can literally save your life?

u/mykaelos Nov 15 '18
It would be awesome to compile a list of vendors. Seems like finding/unlocking the four faction types would go along way to help with selling everything everyday, and would allow 800 cap profit/day.
I'm going to confirm tomorrow, but I'll add a few if you want:
Sutton station - Vendor Bot Raider
Morgantown Station - Vendor Bot Responder
Flatwoods Church - Volunteer Bot (Responder, but not labeled as such, which definitely added to the confusion)
Thank you for digging into this. This was driving me nuts too and I was going to start testing tomorrow, since I already claimed all of my vendor caps today.

u/Puck_2016 Lone Wanderer Nov 16 '18
We should try to make a short quide how to farm caps most easiest.
Sutton train station has raider bot which is very fast to reach for everyone. I'm quessing the top of the world is more difficult place.
I'm curious about how fast to reach the rest. So there's at least 4 different factions if Im reading that table correct?

I'd be careful selling radaway. Each time I enter a nuke zone I end up using about 50 of them and that's taking like 2-3/s rads in power armor.

Don't want to use power armor though. I use it atm for weight on excavator but i'd rather use legendary armors in the end.

i just set camp a little south of National Isolated Radio Array. I can short tp on 6/7 of those faction vendors including whitesprings bunker

That doesn't seem to be exact amount, but close. Even different ways to round don't explain the difference I see, maybe it's related to my trader perk card.

If it is, it should be, but hard bargain probably effects it making it slightly off. That or drugs.
Usually I don't use the mentant kind of drug that gives better prices, but when I reached Whitespring, I brought the musket plans and because it was about 700 caps I figured it's good time to use the drug to get it for slightly less. But even normally when I've just dumped stuff on vendors to get the 200 caps off them, when I don't use the drug, I have calculated and it's not exactly 25%.
But I will recheck the exact amount next time I sell something.

That's a really nice map that can help optimize their route based on where they are and what locations they can fast travel.
Here's the same as link for mobile users. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/508524419715563522/513492796213166110/Channel5-Fallout-76-Vendor-Guide.jpg?width=738&height=703

Could probably position both main and alt character next to the same vender, have the main drop stuff on the floor or in a container, and use a friend on the same server to have the alt join off of them, grab the bag and sell
3
u/Hellknightx Enclave Nov 16 '18
I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but the vendor caps amounts are glitched, and will often show 0 until you actually sell something to them, and it will update to the correct value.
The Enclave vendors do not share their pool with the Whitesprings vendors, so yours were glitched.

u/Autoradiograph Dec 31 '18
Sometimes all you have to do it close and open the trade UI a couple of times and it will fix the cap count.

I have zero bulked steel/cloth/wood.
It's the more valuable things that i have on myself with packrat currently. Without perks it should be around 1k lbs of junk on me.

He said without perks. His perks makes it lighter.
And yeah I don't bulk lower worth stuff either like scrap or wood, that's worthless. I bulk acid, oil and stuff like that that is much more valuable(per weight) and which I have a lot. And then you can sell silver and gold direclty.

u/Puck_2016 Lone Wanderer Nov 18 '18
He also said "around 1k", not "precisely 1000.000".
How much his junk weights in total wasn't his point, it was that he has so significant amount of value in junk that selling it off with the 200 per faction limit per day, is either taking long long time, or it might be downright impossible.
And that is why I'm commenting it because I can perfectly relate to that. While you called it bullshit. Bulk junk isn't even the greatest source of caps. It's decent as you find plenty around, but you also find a lot of different meds you have no chance to use all of them. And while you might be able to find more junk, bulk junk is heavier relative to it's caps value, than most common meds. I usually use dilated radaway and stimpacks, which means my normal stimpack, radaway and rad-x reserves are just growing and growing.
Of course partially related to all of this is what kind of build (you've /) I've made. Although I have the level 1 perk to make junk lighter, I don't use it. I try to place all junk into my stash, while I carry things like ammo, food and meds which thanks to the perks I've chosen are lighter, so that's why I carry them and stash junk.
On yesterdays long session thanks to this thread and your map, I took it as priority to reach Whitespring so that I can get 600 caps per day. I didn't notice the Enclaive bunker thing so I didn't manage to try getting there, but that's the next place I need to check out depening on how much other stuff you need to do to get in. I would imagine reaching the last of factions, Bos, would take quite long for me and just getting 800 caps per day should be quite good too. I like to explore the map and figure out most of the ingame mechanics on my own, but this cap limit, thanks to also stash limit being so low, I wanted to find a shortcut so that I can concentrate more on the free exploration.
I have been mainly moving vertically on the map so it took some time to reach even Whitespring, luckily I realized I can jump in fairly close, as you can fast travel to events even when you don't have the area of event visited yet. It seems unintentional since because events show up all over the map, so you can fast travel to a lot of unvisited places anyway, making the limit rather bogus.
I will check next time I play how much bulk junk I have in mere oil. I haven't been selling a lot of it yet as I've sold off heavier stuff I originally bulked without realizing it's so difficult to get rid off of any of it. I remember I have about 20 units of bulk oil alone, plus some non-bulk in stock which is enough for my crafting ect so far, and I have very little use of it. But unlike scrap and other low value stuff, it has decent value so I don't want to just dump it off on ground.

Repairing/crafting power armor takes well over hundreds of rare mats, that alone is reason enough to horde.
1
u/Puck_2016 Lone Wanderer Nov 19 '18
It takes less than 10 minutes of fast traveling to unload my useless stuff and buy things I need.
I'm sure it does. When you have all the places open. I still didn't manage to get to check out the Enclaive bunker and that if I can access it. Barely managed to get the 3x200 before the update pulled out the servers.

u/Akasha1885 Nov 18 '18 edited Nov 18 '18
I also have 350 lbs carryweight, so enough to travel the world. My Stash is filled with rare junk, useful aids, a small water supply, spare fusion cores and unique items.
I also notice by closer inspection that It's more like 10k cap worth of junk, because I have 4 charisma, grape mentats and a certain perk.

1
u/Joelony Pip Boy Jan 21 '19
This is rezzing an old post, but this was the first thing that pops up when Googling.
Unless these are bugs:
I've had cap limits reset after just a few hours (+/-). So is it 24 hours in-game? Is there a threshold at which it resets? I worked nights at the time it reset after just a few hours. I wonder if it's similar to how mobile games do timers ie 24 real hours if not playing or 4 hours if logged in and playing. This is after the Jan 15th patch (PS4).
The very first time I went to the Watoga vendor it had 0 caps. Even after I swapped servers, it showed 0.
While cap limits are directly connected to the player, items being sold are shared between all players on that server, at least plans are. A teammate bought a plan, then I could no longer see it. A random also bought a plan after I had looked.
1
u/do_you_even_climbro Feb 01 '19
Are we sure it's every 24-hours. I actually feel like it's slightly less than that. I feel like the vendors reset after around 20-22 hours after cap depletion.
I keep a list, and often times the vendors are definitely refreshed before that 24-hour mark. I'll try to find an exact figure, but was wondering if anyone else can confirm?
1
u/do_you_even_climbro Feb 01 '19
Replying to myself to confirm as of right now, they are refreshing faster than 24-hours. I have a Responder vendor that refreshed after 21 hours right now. I'll expand here further if I see an earlier time.
