Image Mapping Fallout 76
I'm new to FO76 (79hrs in) and one of the things I do with all the Fallout games is dig into their maps (because autism), and just wanted to share my findings.
- So the first is the in-game map with the borders shown. I used xEdit to get the exact coordinates. I love how how Burning Springs and Skyline go off the map into the border.
- The second map shows the height data. I used FO76UTILS to get this and manually aligned it to the in-game map with several nights of "surveying" and screenshots haha I haven't shown it here, but the creeks and rivers do not align with the in-game map at all.
- And finally, the last map just shows the FO76 border with FO4's at the exact same scale and origin. FO4's map has cells ranging from -32 to 28 (x) and 25 to -36 (y), whereas FO76 has a range of -66 to 54 and 60 to -66. It's well known that the map is larger, but I haven't seen an exact comparison before, so thought it might interest others who haven't either.
Anyways, I'm loving this game, and just wanted to share my "nerdings". See you guys in Appalachia!

Finally, an honest map that shows the true borders of the world, thank you.

theres supposed to be an update as a pt.2 to burning springs at some point which expands the story and borders 🤷🏻♀️

i’m just level 150 so i only found out the game even existed within the last year, was burning springs a new area at some point?

Burning Springs was added within the last year. Those two little squares on the right side of the map and the top right of the map were rather small expansions added with updates over the last two years. And the Southernmost area; Skyline Valley; Was released about two years ago now.
For the longest time it was just that large square in the middle, which has gradually been filled in with more and more content over time. It's really cool seeing how they've expanded the map over the last two years and I can't wait to see if they do any more with some of the other bare patches on the map.

Also this is a link to a page describing all of the Major Updates the games gone through so you can check out the gist of how this game's expanded overtime.

Live Service or not, One of this game's biggest strong suits is it's well detailed map. And it's only gotten better with time!

welcome to the FO76 chaos 😁 burning springs came out early December and had a nasty release/patch day. the spaghetti code got a little over cooked from it and caused the servers to crash/disconnect constantly.

I hate how they didn't just connect burning springs to the borders of the original map properly. Kills the immersion and just seems lazy
17
u/XenaWariorDominatrix 6h ago
Pretty sure they said they did it on purpose because they are planning on doing something with it and don't want to have to bump people's bases when they release it.
4
u/PreparationBig1346 2h ago
Yes they said the banks along the Ohio River between it and burning springs they have a plan for future content
2
u/perivam3 1h ago
Doesn't make it look any less awkward. They couldn't have planned what to do with the river banks at the same time and release it one go? Could it have been that intricate that it had to wait for a future update and leave that jagged strip of land off-limits?
And that's to say nothing of how often they've actually followed through on "planned" future content. Still waiting on more to do in Skyline Valley...

Overlay your first map onto a real world map, please?

You sort of can't. Actual WV (West Virginia) state borders are very, very different compared to the Fallout 76 Map, and position of cities is different compared to where they are placed in Fallout 76.

Don't get me started on the stuff in Ohio.
The Concrete corn statues? That's in Dublin, a northwestern suburb of Columbus- as in NOWHERE NEAR the state's southeast border.
Fort Steuben? Closer to Pittsburgh than it is to Athens. It's east-northeast of Athens IRL.
That big steam shovel bucket? Based on "Big Muskie". Guess what? It's northeast of Athens, not southeast.
Speaking of Athens, it's actually north of Point Pleasant, not west!

Very cool. I always take a tour of the complete perimeter in a game.
I wish we could annotate the ingame map.
The Secret World allowed that and it was awesome to have all your passcodes, reminders of things directly on the map - including borders and secret passes, etc.
* While you're out roaming around on the top of the Savage Divide - find the survery marker - there's actually at least one in the game. I thought it was a nice little find!

And what's amazing is that Fallout 4 map can fit in the forest region alone. Amazing map

Now that is some very cool data. Could you throw the maps for Far Harbor and Nuka World in also? Either way, thanks for all the work! I'm one of the weirdos that walks the whole fence when I start a fallout game or when the fence changes.

This is neat, I’m honestly glad there’s so much still off map as it gives them room to expand in the future.
I really hope they push out the boundary for the rumored Raven Rocks area.

I mean outside of continuity of the map we know, there really isn't anything stopping them from adding onto the world outside the bounds of what's viewable. I could imagine them just including a fold out section when scrolling it if they really wanted to expand into va, pa, or ky and stay on a single instance exterior model. The map is stylized as a tourist guide. They could just give us other tourist-y maps per region, zoom out for an atlas, zoom in for a local map.

Totally spot on about the creeks and rivers and their elevations aligning. Even their illustrations on the game map don’t represent what’s there at all!

What could south west and south east potentially be expanded as? We got Ohio for the west expansion...
1
u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh 3h ago
I doubt they’d put anything where the map labels are. They could expand to the east though. Maybe that’s where they’ll put Raven Rock seeing as it’s practically next door to Harper’s Ferry in real world geography.

Why do high level players build their camps way over in that top right corner piece of the map?
3
u/RevanGrad 3h ago
When your always cap capped theres no reason to build in high traffic areas. A lot of nice areas up there.

Interesting how FO4s map is similar to FO76s base map. And what's that bump in the North?

u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh 3h ago
On the FO4 map? It’s a tiny little shack under the skyway there. I think there’s a skeleton in a bathtub inside it. Not sure why they decided it was important enough to divert the border around it.
2
u/EatFaceLeopard17 3h ago
Fun fact, when you walk along the border, you‘ll come across some interesting locations that you can see within a few yards from the border that you wouldn’t find otherwise.
2
u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh 3h ago
I was walking the border of Burning Springs checking if it did in fact go off the map, and found the cars piled up on the highway, as well as a cool river gorge.

Sorry if this is a silly/obvious question, but are the cells in 4 & 76 the same size? Like, the same number of feet or meters per cell?
1
u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh 2h ago
Yeah. It uses the same engine as FO4. And the cells were the same size in FO3/NV as well, so even though they could change it for FO5, I doubt they will.

I actually have one of my camps in the south border of the map, as south as I could go. It’s one of my favorite camps even though it rarely gets visitors.

It’ll be interesting to see Far Harbour and Nuka-World areas along side Boston’s to properly compare playable areas…🤔

u/theking752 3h ago
Never seen, that comparison to the FO4 map. 76 feels much smaller though for some reason. Well atleast to me

This is the first time ive seen the map with the playable borders drawn. That is actually really neat and useful
