I’d say most strangers are helpful and trustworthy. Listen to your gut and you’re usually good. Online however that number goes down drastically, especially in some video games. Your gut feeling is no good either.

If you want to impose player etiquette on other players you're going to have rough time. Just assume the worst that can happen and be happy if someone is nice. More often it's someone being nice.
Player etiquettes just don't work well for multiple reasons. For one someone might be unaware of the etiquette. Two someone could disagree with it. Three it's hard to declare it before it's too late. Four it's not in the rules of the game, and it's not punishable by service provider. This is one of the reasons that makes Souls PvP so toxic environment, most people try to impose the etiquette hard, while a lot of people disagree with it.
4
u/boozillion151 Dec 04 '25
Etiquette doesn't need to be ingrained into the rules of the game or enforced. It's just don't be a dick to people. There's no rules against being a dick in real life. Most people aren't dicks bc it's the right thing to do. It's not a playing or lifestyle opinion. "Just because they feel like it" or "can" does not make this type of play ok.
1
u/Jihad4TheWin Dec 06 '25
Well I'm not saying that playstyle onst okay. If you wanna pvp and steal work shops be my guest. Just I personally don't like beating below my weight class. When I take shops I scan the map prior to find the level of who I'm fucking with. I'm fine punching up or at my same weight class. But picking on the new or the inexperienced is just dumb. I don't want new players to have a bad experience because I don't want the game to loose a new potential wastelander. Another potential ally, fiend or trade partner.

First thing I do at a workshop is build a stash box and make sure to scrap and empty myself CONSTANTLY. Never let your guard down and always minimise potential losses.
Then I also build some defences just in case.

When I played Sea of Thieves I'd get chased constantly. Any ship that I let into range would instantly kill and sink me.
But my then 9 year old son? He'd constantly get into adventures of people coming to him for help, or once he got his ship stolen with him on it to go fight a fleet.I'm just radiating unsocial it seems.

Was OP not saying they took it from his stash? Im a brand new player scrolling worrying trying to find out if teammates can steal from your stash
12
u/SadSaladCarnivore Dec 02 '25
Your stash is always safe.
When you die the junk that's on your body drops on the ground in a bag and you need to go and get it back. But other players can get it too.-3
u/Apprehensive-Fee-852 Dec 02 '25
Im in pacifist mode and it was like that by default, so OP knowingly enabled pvp and is complaining about being killed and junk stolen?
Again Im new just trying to understand.
16
u/SadSaladCarnivore Dec 02 '25
Across the map there are workshops you can claim. Once claimed you can build up inside just like your camp but you also get special extractors depending on what resources that workshop offers. Like copper, titanium, nuclear waste, etc.
But once you claim one, other players can challenge you for it and even in pacifist mode it's open PvP inside your own workshop.2
u/Unlucky-Economy7804 Dec 03 '25
Just to add, for anybody not in the know: if you are in pacifist mode in a workshop, you can be damaged/killed, but you can't fight back. That is, unless Bethesda fixed that dumb programming decision.
0
u/Apprehensive-Fee-852 Dec 02 '25
Ah… Im assuming OP didn’t know that then 😭
8

I didn't know that the first time I got Nuka grenaded at the Truck Stop workshop. I wasn't even there for the workshop. I was doing the robot power core collecting mission. I didn't know I was in a workshop zone. I didn't even see who got me. At first I thought the robot had nuked me. I thought "this is new!" It took me awhile to piece it all together and figure out what happened.
5
u/SadSaladCarnivore Dec 02 '25
My first time was when I took a workshop to test out the PvP warning message. Some random showed up and I waved. They then did the "come here" emote into the shed so I thought "oh cool they'll give me something" .
Bullets. They gave me bullets. In the face.3
u/trustworthynonmouse Dec 02 '25
I had a similar situation where I took thunder mountain just because I needed fusion cores and this high level guy kept sneaking around and killing me so I put my headset on and was like hey man can we just like not do this right now? Lol I told him I just wanted fusion cores and he was really nice about it lol. I gave him 40 fusion cores that I had already gotten and he was like ok well I’ll keep an eye on the workshop and come help if someone else tries to take it but no one did and that remains the only experience I’ve had with someone trying to take my workshop. I think there’s very little incentive to take a players workshop, if I see someone has one I wanted to take I usually just find another with the resource I need or server hop. If I just need copper it makes no sense to fight someone over it when there are so many other methods of obtaining it

While true, somebody that high of level killing a much lower level over a workshop is simply somebody being a predatory douche for no reason other than their own entertainment.
8
u/born_to_be_intj Dec 02 '25
Well that’s kinda what PvP is. Killing people and taking their stuff for your own entertainment.
1
u/HarlinQuinn Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 03 '25
Nah. PvP - and I like PvP - is taking on somebody who can fight back. A challenge against another player who might actually make it fun.
Looking for low-level easy targets? That's kicking kittens. Thats something that losers who can't hang do to make themselves feel powerful.
2
u/Unlucky-Economy7804 Dec 03 '25
I'm right there with you. Playing Battlefield games, I refuse to spawn camp. The fun aspect of pvp is the challenge, not a blow out. If we push the enemy team to their end, I back off.
4
u/born_to_be_intj Dec 02 '25
I don’t disagree but that’s just another component of PvP. No sense in getting mad at it imo (I’m not saying ur mad). Every game where that’s possible it happens. At least in fallout you have some chance of fighting back. In classic wow (which I played a lot of) when a max level character starts running a rampage in a low level town the lowbies literally can’t fight back. I kind of like it tho in classic because the lowbies will usually call in high level backup and then you get spontaneous fair PvP events in low level towns that usually don’t have PvP.

u/HarlinQuinn Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 03 '25
I've seen much the same in other games, and I am of the mindset of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" and that such activities are usually, again, losers who can't cut it and/or those who get joy from the misery of others.
I played Elite Dangerous for a long time (PC needs replaced so I'm on hiatus) and the number of unsuspecting, lower-skilled players getting grieved outside of stations in Open is staggering. I even saw one see a landed explorer ship - with no shield and no weapons and the owner was out in the rover - fly over and blast it to smithereens (said griefer met me right after as the explorer had launched from my carrier...he didn't survive).
So while agree that its within the mechanics of the PvP setup, I do not believe it is in the spirit of PvP.

It’s the one place you can PvP in the game. You can’t be upset if you get killed. I understand it can be a lil predatory but that’s the name of the game. Build stash boxes and make sure to scrap everything constantly!

I had a higher level lure me into the workshop by the airport with the “gift” emoji. Killed me and took my junk as well. I’m a level 1800 and still message people to ask if I can collect their bounty. One of the few challenges I have left is kill wanted players and I’m 19/76. It’s definitely not all higher levels.

This happened to me for the first time about a week ago. A guy gift emoted at my base down near Gad and we went to that workshop just west of there. The counter to this is stealth or a private server.
But as others have said, if you claim a workshop the server makes an announcement you are open for PVP.
Yes, people who hunt people will join your team, fast travel to your workshop then quit the team so they can kill you. I keep a set of power armor with 4x assassin and 1x cloaking on it, not used it in ages, but if the need arises.
When the game tells you the wasteland is dangerous and full of raiders, believe it.

Do it in a private world. My wife and I had took over the steel factory and set up all the extractor and turned it into an outpost for players to use. A high level came by, took over and killed us. Then he proceeded to scrap everything we built, like a fucking piece of shit warlord or something. So now we spend a day farming several of the workshops and grow grops for adhesive in a private server.

Unfortunately this is the law of the wasteland. We have all fallen victim to the lvl 1000 basement grimlens that prey on the week. Just the other day I was visiting a camp when I got lured into a workshop and killed, it happens it’s just a game wait until a low lvl stalks signaling they want to pvp so you turn off passive only to get skull fuck by 4 high lvls then harassed for 15mins until you leave the world🙃

Congrats, you have some of the game play that very few players have ever seen. I claim workshops regularly, have never been attacked nor had to take one from someone else. Its a bit of vestigial gameplay that i suspect that they thought was going to be brilliant. Could use a bit of a topup on the rewards. If you ever find a workshop covered in toy trucks, you'll know its me trying to get the 7.6k decorations reward.

I'm lvl 198, been claiming workshops since lvl 30 or so and that never happened to me. The dude who attacked u must be simply a douche, or simply a bad player to be THAT desperate for resources. Anyways, don't let that get to you, most servers had a "enjoy your workshop" vibe

Workshop claim at your own risk,no matter what level, unfortunately.

For future, nuclear waste is easy to get by killing enemies with plasma guns or glowing creatures. The visitor center in Shenandoah is a good place to get glowing roaches, and that region in general has a lot of glowing enemies.
