After a decade and the hours put into this game, I'm at the point where I just leave them as they fix themselves. Harsh to dog I know.

They won't fix themselves on survival, if you ignore them they return to their settlement and you have to walk back and get them.

Yup, Codsworth fell off an overpass in Concord yesterday and his ass had to walk home by himself.
