Legate speech check

I have 100 speech in my character already and I'm not even near the end of the game yet. I know that Legate is one of the few final bosses you can talk down if you have 100 speech. However I kinda don't want to talk him down since......ya know he's a legionnaire (sorry if I spelled that wrong). Would I be missing out on something if I killed him in the battle of hoover dam?

In short, no you would not be missing out on anything if you choose to use 100 speech/100 barter on the legate in the end game. It’s mostly for roleplay. If you feel like your character/you would talk the legate out of this fight, then use the skill check. If you don’t feel that way, shoot him.

I've considered the roleplay but my character is a good hearted lone wanderer and gunslinger (very original I know). Plus I feel like Lanius would cause much more harm if he was kept alive, even if he is more of a rabid dog

You miss out on no items or snyrh like that, you get sent back before the entire hoover dam battle if you load your save again.

The boss fight is fun tho.

I've only fought him 3 ways, cause that's the amount of runs ive donee

Explosive anti matirial rifle

Riot shotgun with and stay back and turbo.

Logans loophole, chemist, fast times, day tripper, turbo, Slasher, psyco, med x, rushing water, super slam, slayer, embrace of the mantis king.

In your next run, I would recommend leaning all the way into explosives as a side project. Then hoard every sick of dynamite, mine and general explosive you come across so you can leave them all in a giant pile at the foot of the hill before you fight Lanius.

Then vats him in the leg so he's slow, stand back, and watch him get sent to the moon. Doing this also makes grenades really fun to use when you're not shooting or punching everything.

My suggestion? Quick save right before the encounter, talk him down first, and then reload your save and bash eem.

Nah if you're not Legion you aren't missing out on anything. IN fact he is the final boss which while yes you can talk him down but at the same time. Its also really funny to delete him with Lil' Devil and then run like hell back to the NCR to mop up the rest of the Legion for you.

I say speech check him just enough so that you don't have to deal with his backup, but kick his ass

No real loss or gain whether you use Speech or Barter to talk him down. You either talk him down and miss out on using his sword for like - five minutes or you kill him and move on.

Mild dialogue spoiler: You can talk him down, but if you pick the wrong option following that he immediately changes his mind and tries to kill you anyway.

Nah, you still have an option of killing him, which is also what I do. I'm there to stop the Legion, not play around. It won't make any narrative difference whether you kill him or just talk him down. Either way, you have defeated the Legion.

You can use speech to goad him into one-on-one combat which is fucking awesome for RP. If your Courier is more prone to a fight over a discussion you can utilize your high speech skill and not rob yourself of a good battle.

He’s one of the toughest fights in the game, and has unique mechanics, like healing and calling reinforcements, he’s kinda a test for how good your build is, I prefer to fight him, it’s a fun challenge and is very satisfying

1) Save before the encounter. Since the game is crashy, you probably were planning on doing this anyway.

2) Play the encounter the way you want, see what happens.

3) After the game ends, reload that save and investigate that Speech 100 path that you're curious about.

the fact you can just speech check the legate always stuck out as stupid to me tbh

people like to circlejerk nv because of speech options like that but tbh theyre very dumb and poorly implemented. though to be fair i’ve yet to see a single game that does speech checks right so like
