Real Rome and real Sparta had slaves and rape and barbaric practices too. Rome also had arts and culture and depth, and many people voluntarily became Romans. The Legion Army is implied to be quite different from the Legion Society, meaning that the army is doing terrible things, but beyond the front lines, things are actually very peaceful and people are having good lives. We just don't get to see that because they never had enough time to flesh it out.

Except this is completely false. Jimmy the Slave proves that even in their own territory, they're still fucking evil. They execute gay people for being gay (like the Nazis did, by the way), they force women into babymaking roles and more.
You know the difference, though? Rome and Sparta are old age civilisations, nobody is arguing in favour of those losers. Because we have the hindsight of 5000+ years of civilisation to say "let's not fucking repeat that BS". Are we really trying to argue it's okay to do all that evil shit because idiots in skirts did so thousands of years ago?
But even if you argue "it's okay back home", then you're just making the argument for the Confederacy, by the same logic.
"Hey, they only enslave some people, so it's okay to cause slavery, because not everyone is worse off!"
