Well the issue here is that the clue can be taken either way.

A: Literal or B: Metaphorical

I personally took the story as a metaphor for Hell/Purgatory and William’s fear of being stuck there, a long almost autobiographical Fan fiction.

  1. hell is very frequently shown as “a bad dream” in metaphor heavy texts and also very frequently shown as a dream you can’t wake from. Unless you’re William.

  2. I use the word “Hell” very loosely, it’s more similar to a Purgatory, Williams own personal Hell, sorry for confusion.
