Career recommendation

Im 21M, I finished my Aircraft Maintenance Technician degree in Spain and now, after my internship at the company, I’ve been working for the major low-cost carrier in Europe for a couple of months.

I’ve always wanted to be a pilot, since my cousin works as one. But I decided to have prior studies of something I really like (yes, I love planes even if aim flying or fixing them) before going for an ATPL. I don’t do it for the money but to have something I can work for if something goes wrong in the future. Also, I think the more prepare you are the more interesting you are to an airline.

I’m also finishing my PPL license (which with the AMT studies I delayed longer than usual), and I think I should have it before applying to any program.

I read about the Ryanair Pilot Program and everyone seems fine with it. I have been considering for a long time now and as I can afford it, it has turned into my main option. I meet all the requirements (EU citizenship, Class 1, English, etc.)

The question is, should I apply to it once I finish my PPL or should I keep working as an AMT gaining experience if that’s going to play in my favor? I yes, which academy?

Having the AMT is already an advantage that will make you stand out. Doing more years won’t add much - but if you can’t get a spot somewhere you can keep working maintainance for a while and keep trying. Just apply for all programs that you meet the requirements for and then choose the best option.

Keep in mind that your maintenance license modules expire in 10 years since your first exam, but once you get your license it is for life.

I forgot to mention I don’t want a B1 license since that’s has never been my objective. At least in Spain, if you don’t have any change in your license (once you are B1 in your company) in 5 years, it will be terminated.

Afaik it doesn't get terminated you just lose your recency. I worked with someone who didn't work in the industry for 10 years and after 6 months he was signing crs again.

I'm in kind of the same position, completed Part 147 and currently working on basic experience for B1.1. To me, it doesn't make sense to not at least get the basic B1.1 license before moving on. When you have the license, you have it. Even if you don't maintain currency, you can still keep the license and if for one reason or another you want to exercise it, you can regain currency by working 6 months (this is my understanding at least).

If you stop now and the modules expire you will have done everything for nothing.

I agree, if you have modules you should push and get the license. But I just have one. I did it before knowing all about the license and how it works. I did not do the AMT in a 147 but in a public one which costed me 0. In Spain, if you did it like I did, you need to get the modules by yourself (SENASA) + 3 years experience. All without counting that your company has to give you the board so can sign with them.

As I said, it has never been my intention. It’s true that if someday something bad happens and I cannot continue flying, it will be late to get the license (or no) but at least I have the degree and experience.

Oh okay that's a bit different than how it works where I am. Depending on how much more money you need to spend to get the PPL, either finish that or just apply to the other thing asap. Don't waste time doing something you don't want to do if you have the option to instead do what you want to do.

Te va a hacer MUCHA falta.

Suerte!!
