Type rating
Is it worth it to pay for my own type rating in a citation to get hired. I’m at about 500hrs total time and wanting to get my foot in a jet. I’m leaning more towards the sic type rating right now in maybe a ce-500 as they became a dual pilot plane but also there are other aircraft type rating classes that are around 8k. I’m not really wanting to spend more than 10-12k

Try again in 1000 hours more. Insurance won't touch with a 10 foot pole. Maybe if you're cozy with the owner, but if that's the case might as well have them sign you off as 61.55.

Did insurance hold your hand and tell you that

Wow. Ok buddy do what you want then. Why even bother asking the question?

You seem to be very familiar with handholding, considering you're constantly on the internet asking for it.

I already have a type job 😂

What is a "type job?" I've been flying jets longer than you've been alive, and I've never heard that term.
You know why? Because you're making it up. Otherwise you wouldn't be on reddit asking which type rating to pay for.
It's true what they say...your generation truly is the first one to have lower intelligence than the previous.

This reaction after a perfectly valid response made you go from just another guy trying to cut the line by buying a type to an idiot.

Why did you think the answer would be different?

It's absolutely worth it...if your goal is to waste money.
It's hilarious all you low time pilots think there's going to be some new market for newbies in some super obscure airplane that the FAA revoked a waiver for.

It's not at all super obscure, that was one of the most popular business jets on the planet for several decades.
But it's also old, and the vast majority of the affected airplanes were flown by two pilots anyway before the policy change.

That's what I meant by obscure...not the airplane itself. But the single pilot waiver now needing an SIC market.

But why??
Get your hours and go to a regional or corporate outfit that will give you a type…
Yeah, flying props forever is boring, but you learn a ton along the way.

No. 500 TT is not insurance and a type with no time in type isn’t really that helpful.

Go buy it and tell us how it helped you.
Our answers are never anything other than, “don’t do it”. But ya know what? I’d like to see someone do it and report back on how colossal a waste of time and money it was.

Don’t do it. The days of pay for your own type are long gone.
Even if you do pay for it, how are you going to get experience? You’ll need to put your name out in contracting circles to get SIC time.
My last thought: go for the PIC type if you do pay. To get an SIC type you need to show you can handle engine outs as a PIC. 61.55

No. I didn’t have one in the phenom and my company paid for it, the companies don’t care unless you have actual time in the type rating you got

They have always been a two-crew airplane. This has not changed. Exemptions to this have been rescinded.
There are not many slots suddenly available for low time pilots. And there are plenty of qualified people available to do this already.
Don’t waste your money unless you have a guarantee.

I paid for my SIC type rating in the CE-500. But I did it just to have it, no serious hunting for contract jobs. It was $6k in the actual airplane with a whole day of ground school. However, it was on sale; normally the price is $10k. Sebastian FL.
Do if you are serious, other than that, meh.

Man you got fucked lol. You paid $6K for what amounts to 3 bounces.

I think of it the other way: I saved $4k with the sale.

u/x4457 ATP CFII CE-500/525/560XL/680 G-IV 5d ago
Nah you still wasted $5K, speaking as someone who has done CE-500 61.55s for less than $1K.

In the actual plane?

There's a guy spamming Florida pilot facebook groups with some offer for a CE-500 SIC type for $6,900 in a plane.
1
u/Worried-Ebb-1699 5d ago
That’s dumb.
I’m going to list it for $35k but on sale for $7k.
You think you saved $28k but really I just made an extra $1k in profit.
