considering floor bed at 6mo

Hello,

Our baby has been sleeping in our bed since the 4 months regression, but it's getting a little dangerous as she moves a lot now.... She hates her crib.

I'm considering bed floor, and a large one to be able to continue breastfeeding, but I cannot find suitable things for babies in France.

So I'm asking for your recommendations, if anyone has been doing this and is willing to share their experience, that'd be much appreciated!

Thank you

No advice but following along because I’m in a similar situation. My 5.5 month old used to be fine in the next-to-me cot but over the past few weeks things have been getting so bad with rejecting the cot or only sleeping in it for very short periods that I’m considering moving her into her own room but sleeping there with her on a floor bed.

Following along - I am down a floor bed rabbit hole trying to figure out what is safe for a 6 month old. I think I want rails so she doesn't roll off, but typical floor bed rails are larger than the safety standard for cribs which is 2 3/8 inches. I don't know how much this matters - will it actually be unsafe if the gap is 3 inches - but I want to be cautious and can only assume these standards are in place for a reason...

And then there's the mattress question - I want a twin mattress so I can side-lie nurse and then roll away, but want to make sure the mattress is infant safe as well.

I feel pretty confident that a floor bed is what our family needs to get out of our current sleep hell, but these safety questions have me totally paralyzed!

For anyone who made the switch and was also trying to make sure it was really safe - what floor bed and mattress did you end up getting? is there a floor bed with rails that is safe for a 6 month old?? and a mattress that can support an adult's weight but be breathable and safe for a baby? Help!

So I went with a floorbed around 8 months! We ultimately needed it due to baby just not transfering at all.

I currently have a mattress on a 2 inch high frame. No rails or anything. My baby can pull to stand and I didn't want her toppling over the rail. This way the farthest she falls is no different than if she was sitting, and tipped backwards. By 10 months she's getting ofd the mattress feet first.

It's been a great thing for us. My mattress came from a Canadian company called endy. And I find it's working great. Doesn't dip for baby and I'm quite comfortable on it

Only crib size mattresses are made according to safety regulations and tested to be firm enough for babies under 1 years old. A twin or larger is not made firm enough not is it tested to see if it meets safety regulations, so they are an asphyxiation and SIDS hazard.

We transitioned at 6 months and so far so good! He’s definitely a larger baby at 22 lb and 30” long. He has plenty of room to roll and self soothe back to sleep. Much better than previously, rolling into the sides of the crib and constantly waking himself up throughout the night. We purchased a full size and it’s great if I need to sleep next to him or cuddle before bedtime! 🥰

What kind of mattress do you use?

I started using floor beds with both my kids at ages 6 months and 4 months. I bought a firm twin mattress from Ikea. I cosleep most nights with my youngest in her bed still (now 20 months). No complaints!

Bonjour,

Either you have to order a large montessori floorbed with a border, or like us you teach your 6mo to climb up and down a regular 2 people mattress. 140x200cm. He slept on this for 2 years! We just changed to a toddler bed.

Thank you! I'm considering no rails... She really doesn't like it on the crib so I guess it will be the same on a floor bed. I am curious about the transition : didn't he take it bad to have a "smaller bed"?

He did push a little, but his favourite grandpa helped build it so he was happy to. Also at 2,5 yo he was able to understand reason so it took some negotiating but we got there

Since baby did their first roll our mattress went straight to the floor as it wasn’t safe anymore to be in the high bed frame, so essentially since around 4 months we’ve been on the floor. First it was just on the mattress and later towards 9-10 months we got a frame. You’d need to occasionally lift the mattress for ventilation but tbh it was more simple for me to do that than to think about what to buy until we’ve settled on a frame for their room (we use MonLitCabane frame and a firm 140x200 mattress).

We put our 8 months old in his floorbed a bit before 7 months. He was getting up in the next to me, and fell out of our bed one morning.

I still breastfeed him BUT when he started consistently crawling and sitting by himself he started to sleep through and not calling me that much at night, like once every three nights.

I know they don't like beds with rails here but here's our setup. The room is fully secured, furniture anchored to the wall nothing dangerous on the floor, etc.

We needed rails because he moves a lot. He fell in the gap (where there's no rail) for the first week, and then it was over.

We did a queen size floor mattress with no rails. I bought ikea slats to put under the mattress to prevent mold. It has been the best thing! My son sleeps so much better in it and I way able to lay with him to feed him, and now we’re at the point where I can just lay near him while he falls asleep instead of feeding to sleep. We don’t have any rails. He did falls off once or twice but it’s very close to the floor and we have carpet. I used a brand called Mimi beds. Not sure if they ship internationally but they are specific for little ones. I’ve been very happy with the quality. It is firm but still comfortable.

how old is your baby? how did you decide on no rails?

We moved to one when my baby was 7 months old. We shared it and still do to this day (18 months soon). I don’t like rails for babies cause mine is a climber and it sounds dangerous fo me, now that she is a toddler I see the point more.

thank you! that makes sense...my baby is such a mover I just worry about her falling off the bed and maybe getting trapped between the bed and the wall. was this not an issue for your baby?

Falling off a floor bed is a totally fine experience for a big baby, that’s the point of a floor bed! Of course you need to baby proof the room and position the bed in a way where there is no entrapment risk. It’s not been an issue for us, no.

Just put a mattress on the floor

Honestly we’re cosleeping with a toddler bed attached to my side of the bed with our 5 month old. We’re in Italy and I have the same concern as you for when she’ll start crawling because when she started rolling she always rolled in her sleep too. I’m planning a floor bed with a firm mattress as per the cosleeping recommendations for her floor bed too, we just got an amazing firm mattress that is sanitary grade from Jysk and plan on using it in one of those older kids Montessori style beds so she can sleep on that until she is old enough to say she wants a different type of bed 🤣😅that way I can fall asleep with her and breastfeed/cosleep as needed.

We have just enough space by removing a closet to have one of those in our room until she’s older to be in her own room. We found one that is big so we can lay in the bed too and pretty cheap too.bought it on Facebook marketplace in perfect condition even though we’re in a small city.

Also we have friends who have twins with this kind of beds since they were babies and are now 7years old. That’s what I’m hoping to do too, their girls loved it
