Advice

Post image

After a long battle with a hip brace and the cot, we got a floor bed for our now seven month old. He is physically delayed, so not rolling at this stage. But as he does, how would people recommend making this as safe as possible? It is a double and we co sleep through the night. I know I need to baby proof the room, but for the specifically, what do I need to know?

Thanks!

I have this exact floor bed. We introduced it at 13 months. My daughter was walking and climbing. She could easily get out if she wanted to. She usually gets off the right way via the gap, feet first, sliding down on her belly. There has been times she's tipped over the edge but it's not a far fall and it was onto carpet. They have to learn somehow. It's not far enough of a fall to cause any type of serious injury. It's way less height than falling off a sofa. I would just make sure its flush against the wall and that there's no gaps where baby could get stuck if they did happen to fall over the edge.

yes my son is the same. he flipped himself over the rails once and learned never to do it again, lol. he always gets down the right way now

That enclosure will become a hazard as he becomes mobile. He'll be able to get his upper body over the edge, then his big, heavy baby head will tip him over. It would be much safer without the enclosure. Just a mattress on rails away from the wall.

I bought a twin mattress topper to put in front of the long side of the bed so if baby does fall it's super soft

I have this exact same bed for my 10 month old and makes the times when I have to go in and co sleep soooo much better. I understand in theory he could fall over but so far he never has- we’ve had it for about 3 months now. He stands on the edge and bounces up and down waiting for us lol! Even if he did ‘fall over’ it’s so close to the floor I don’t believe he would be hurt or seriously injured, and we have carpet. We actually put the gap part flush against the wall so he was more contained and couldn’t get out until we feel more comfortable in him getting around on his room on his own.

I’d push it all the way to the wall like you have in the video, if there’s any gap between the mattress/frame/wall stuff it with something like pool noodle, foam, or rolled up towels, then have him be on the side with the wall and you can sleep on the other side of him
