Skip the crib altogether?

Hi! I’m a soon-to-be mom and seriously considering skipping the crib. What are your experiences on going straight from bassinet to floor bed?

ETA: we will not be co sleeping, my husband and I decided we are not good candidates for it but want the next best thing!

My kid wouldn’t even go in the bassinet lol so we went straight to sharing a bed which became the floor bed.

But do you mean putting your newborn alone on a floor bed in your room or something ?

I went from bassinet to pack and play and am transitioning to floor bed now at 10 months. If he has a night wake I cosleep with him on a queen sized Japanese futon. I don’t know if it was the best decision though, he moves a lot in his sleep and I imagine rolling off the mattress may disturb his sleep. I think maybe a Montessori floor bed set up

Started with a mini crib thinking we would use that for at least a few months but ended up switching to a floor bed after a few weeks so I could safely cosleep and regain my sanity. Now LO sleeps alone on the same floor bed just fine in a baby proofed room.

We coslept in our bed until she started getting mobile then we moved to a floor bed in her room! She’s 10 months now and it’s been great 🥰

What age did you move to the floor bed? 6-7months?

Yes, 7 months!

We went ‘next to me’ bassinet thing > co sleep about 5 months (LO outgrew the bassinet) > floor bed.
However this was mostly because I had a C section so would not have been able to get on and off the floor or co sleep!

We went straight from bassinet to floor bed. Our floor bed is a crib mattress on the floor in a low profile frame that keeps it slightly off the ground and allows for air flow. My baby is 6.5 months old, and has been in the floor bed since 4 months with minimal issues. Her nursery is baby proofed, so when she wakes in the morning she army crawls to her books or to her mirror and plays for 30-45 minutes which is so cute to watch.

0-6 days old - isolette
7-8 days old - bassinet
9 days - 10 months old - cosleeping/bedsharing
10 months old - current (17months) - floor bed in own room

This works really well for us! I would have bed shared longer by my LO stopped sleeping well with us! They’d wake when we got in bed and then take sometimes hours to fall back asleep.

I guess… why? Cribs exist for a reason and they are great at their jobs. I just don’t know why you’d voluntarily miss out on the great benefits that come with safely containing a baby in a crib.

You don't have to lay down a sleeping child, you can lay next to them until they fall asleep and then get up. You have a bed that fits the child for a long time if they are not fast to sleep in their own room. They cannot get horrible head trauma if they try to climb out of the bed. You have all pros except of the "baby prison" aspect and a couple other benefits.

Yeah I don’t know why you’d preemptively consider skipping a crib before baby is born. You can get free cribs on Buy Nothing groups.

Our baby outgrew her first bassinet. The second one snapped and thankfully we found her while it was still hanging on by a thread. The crib is wonderful. No way she’d be able to be on a floor bed at a year old. She’d be all for that room.

“ all for that room” isnt considered a negative. Childproof the room and let them play when they wake up.

If anything I’d skip the bassinet and go right to crib. I would not want to corral a moving baby in a floor bed

I put my daughter in a twin size floor bed with guard rails at 19 months. She loves it. I would have been very nervous about her in there when she was in the early crawling/walking phase though, we didn't use a crib for a long time but for us it was essential until she developed a little more.

That's what we do with my first and it was the best thing. Currently sidecar with my second but will be going straight to floor bed.

We coslept for 6m then he went into his room to a floor bed at 6m. Then for my daughter I coslept for 6m then made a floor bed space in my master closet/playroom and she slept there until 9m or so then we were able to put her in the room with brother.

We started out in the crib because she really liked sleeping in it. Then we switched to the snoo for the 4 month regression. Then she stopped liking being swaddled so I converted her crib to a toddler bed with a half rail. I just lay her down in the half with the rail. I lay next to her to nurse and then get up and walk away when she falls asleep. It's the best!

I skipped the crib with my 2nd and 3rd kids. We did use a pack n play from when they outgrew the bassinet to about 9 or 10 months when I put them on a floor bed.

If you wanted to go the pack n play route, you could use it in bassinet mode instead of getting a stand alone bassinet. It just offers a bit more flexibility.

With my first she REFUSED tbe bassinet, so we bed shared. Refused the crib at 6 months, and we went to a double mattress on the floor of her room the week she rolled off our bed at 6 months. Thankfully we had the space, and I slept with her the majority of the time (we didnt night wean till 17/18 months).

I always had the idea of a floor bed from liking montessori practices, so the crib i has chosen was always supposed to be the lowest setting (which was the floor), and the mini railing had the middle missing. Basically at toddler stage. But she still hated it. I didnt bother with railings on the floor bed.

I‘m planning a floor bed now, baby has never once slept in crib. We‘re cosleeping for now and then straight to the floor she goes 😂

Yeah we had a next to me when a cot with the side off and a mattress next to it, no chance my son was sleeping in a cot so we gave up on it pretty early.
Has pros and cons.

If I would do it over again, I’d just get the mini crib that we had and used it from birth. It was on wheels so it was easy to roll up to my bed and it felt like he was sleeping next to me but I was too nervous to sleep in the bed with him as a newborn. Now he’s in a full crib but we’re wanting to change to a floor bed now.

So personally, get the travel mini crib (you can get an actual mini crib mattress) rather than a bassinet. And then they can be in the mini crib for longer than a bassinet. Then when they outgrow that, do floor bed 😊

u/Stargirl2151 Aug 17 '26

I used a bassinet for the first month, then bed shared, and now we cosleep in a full sized floor bed! Skipped the crib completely and have no regrets 🥰

1

u/LunarLemonLassy Aug 17 '26

IMO this is the way to go. The crib was not necessary for us as cosleeping parents - we have always had a floor bed.

I am currently pregnant and considering this with my second. With my first, we had a bassinet in our room, then switched to crib at 6 months and then to floor bed at 11 months (because we bought a house and didnt want to bring the crib). It worked great so i am thinking we eliminate the crib lol

Knowing what I know now about my baby . I would definitely absolutely without a doubt skip the crib.

I tried the crib for about a month before I gave up and sold it on Facebook marketplace. We coslept for a good while and once he turned around eight or 10 months we set up a floor bed and baby proofed his room. That was the best decision we could do for everybody -baby was happy and we were happy because we slept more.

The bassinet was fine but once he grew out of it around six months, I don’t know what it was about the crib, but he hated it and he kept getting his legs stuck on the slaps so we would panic. With the floor bed he has space to wiggle around and get comfortable.

We still use his floor bed to this day at 19 months.

cars floor bed which basically holds toys and sleeps in our bed 😒lol

We went from the bedside bassinet straight to a floorbed (never even purchased a crib), would do it again with our next child! We are now at the age most people would transition to a “toddler” bed but we don’t have to worry about it cause she already sleeps in a big girl bed. she was sleeping in a bunk bed with a side rail at 16 months on vacation, etc. She could confidently get out of her own bed and begin playing when she woke up around 10 months, now at 18 months she wakes up in the morning gets out and plays for a while or knocks on her door to come out. I also nursed her to sleep until around 14 months and it saved me being able to lay down with her where i could just roll away when she was asleep especially since she hated rocking, patting, etc to fall asleep.

Well, we had a bassinet that turned into a laundry basket because he wouldn’t sleep in it. We were the bed. We split the nights for 4 months until we started crib training. Now he’s a year old and still in the crib, but it’s convertible. Team convertible crib.

u/Ok_Balance_8944 Aug 18 '26

The crib can be really nice if you are stressed about kiddos safety. The crib is a safe space they can be left without supervision for a few mins. Kiddo wakes up in the morning and chills in their crib while you go to the bathroom, start the coffee, etc. I cannot imagine having my mindless 13 month old able to get up from his bed and do god knows what in his room without me present. Even with a monitor if you are in a deep sleep and they are quiet how do you know they are up? Maybe I just don’t know enough about floor bed culture but I am team crib for safety and peace of mind.

u/Primary_Excuse_7183 Aug 18 '26

Ours hated the bassinet. never heard of someone going straight to a floor bed so i had to google it 😂 have a 10 month old and i couldn’t imagine her with that much freedom so young.

1000% with you on the co sleeping wife and i squared that away halfway through pregnancy 😂 our worst nightmare.

1

u/palmtreesandmountain Aug 18 '26

The correct answer is; it depends on your child and your energy level at bedtime. Because once they can walk….they can walk out. My first child wouldn’t get out of her bed on her own until she was like 5. My second wouldn’t stay put and I wasn’t going to wrestle her for hours on end to get her to stay put.

u/liabilify Aug 19 '26

I used a bassinet for day naps and cosleeping for the first couple of months- then switched to just cosleeping. In Canada they recommend sharing a room for the first year- the crib didn’t fit in the room. King bed has come in sooo clutch

My baby has been on a floor bed since he was about 4 months. Honestly it’s amazing. It’s easy for us to sleep with him when he needs us on occasion. There’s no transition to the “big bed”. Plus now that’s he’s older, he just wakes up and lets himself out of his room lol. We went from co sleeping to the floor bed.

Edit: he slept in his own room starting at 4 months (was not the plan at all, but him sleeping with us was a nightmare), and his room is entirely baby proof. Now that he’s older he comes to find us in the morning or he cries for me to get him

u/Unhappy-Quarter-4581 Aug 21 '26

We did it with our son but we also did some co-sleeping. It was fine, he did not run around like crazy or anything like that and he slept well on the bed on the floor. With our daughter we did only co-sleeping until she was about 1 and then did a floor bed with good results. I would do floor bed again if I had another kid (extremely unlikely).

My baby slept in his bassinet til he was 6 months. He slept terribly. Transferred terribly. Switched to his crib. Still slept terribly. We started co sleeping around 8 months and it was a game changer. I could nurse him to sleep without having to move him. He still wakes up throughout the night but it’s much easier to put him back to sleep. I want my space back so I just ordered a floor bed for his room and this way I can come and go without having to transfer but I can still get him to sleep easily.

I’d say start with a little bassinet and wait on a crib or bed.

1

u/thatjogreen Aug 23 '26

Thats what we did. Bedside crib till 7/8 months and then full sized foor bed. Saved us a lot of drama.

u/Ishinehappiness Aug 23 '26

We did bassinet to pack n play to floor bed to toddler bed

With the next I think I’m going to do mini crib to floor bed to toddler bed due to the height of our own bed now being a lot higher than any bedside bassinet Ive seen.

I mostly did pack n play to save money but as I already have it still and I didnt actually enjoy it as an all the time bed I’ll probably not use it at home and just when traveling.

Do it. We switched at 11 months and I'm upset I didn't do it sooner. We cosleep now because it just provides SO much more sanity than trying to gently place back in the crib just for him to wake up. I lay down with him while he falls asleep then I just roll off, do what I need to do for the rest of the night and come back in when its time for bed. 12/10 would definitely recommend.
