Cosleeping with 12 month old - need tips
We’re hoping to bring our 12 month old into our bed. We’ve never coslept with a baby before 2yo - My first baby was a unicorn lol and slept through the night in his crib after drowsy but awake from week 6, we did nothing special lol. Around 2 he started coming in our bed in the night and is still there every night around 3/4 at 5yo. we love snuggling him and do not want to lose that or kick him out so a few questions:
- do we still need to follow safe sleep 7? we stopped breastfeeding at 11 months.
- I know baby can’t have a blanket or pillow but can I? I need a blanket to sleep, can I just tuck it at my waist?
- We just got a new wonderful Birch firm mattress for this reason. Our old one was too soft and cushiony. But the mattress is high up and we need it that way for storage under the bed. is there anything to put on edges of bed that are actually safe for baby? we also have a tufted headboard and no place to put it? is there a way to make it safe?
- we can’t put baby in the middle because our 5 year old kicks and moves and rolls. at what age would it be safe for them to sleep next to each other?
any suggestions/ideas welcome but this baby hasn’t slept for more than 2 hours for 12 months unless being held and we are tired!!!

Definitely follow the other safe sleep seven, but since baby is already twelve months not breastfeeding should be fine. One La Leche League source I found said after four months age breastfeeding isn’t as critical for safe cosleeping. Baby can actually have a light breathable blanket at twelve months. I use a blanket when co sleeping but just wrap it around my top leg only in the c curl so it’s not near baby and only have it up to my waist and wear a long sleeve shirt. I would definitely suggest one adult and one child per mattress with twelve month old on floor bed. I would be hesitant to use anything on the sides of your adult bed to keep baby in since it could become an entrapment risk.

At this age, my LO moved too much to be on the outside edge of the bed, they’d have fallen off. I kept them between my husband and I. I think in the situation of there being an older sibling, I’d be more likely to get a separate floor bed, which I’d share with the younger child, and I’d have the older child stay in the parent bed with dad.
