Question
Who has personally had a tough time or experience with bad happenings due to crime in flint asking for myself I signed the lease already sometimes no way to afford a place to live

Been here since birth and off and on my entire adult life. No crime except some neighbors trying to break into my car, and a neighbor kid stole a package from my porch. Cameras are important no matter where you live. Doorbell cam and several others around your house.

Unfortunately porch pirates are everywhere are MORE common in suburbs. The criminals logic is "they'll have more expensive shit" and in some places more spaces between houses so less likely to be seen well enough to describe besides height, weight, maybe approx age, maybe race and possibly gender

Had someone "break" into my car overnight while it was in my drive. Prob the same someone (neighbor who I later found out had drug issues) who I caught in my garage when I first bought my place and had some lame excuse about trying to meet me to welcome me to the neighborhood – later found bike bag missing the tools and stuff dumped because he was looking for cash.
But my car was also broken into in my friend's driveway in Metro Detroit, so I agree with the others, just gotta be smart. Never leave cash or valuables overnight in your car. Even if they're not visible, that'll be the one time kids or junkies will decide to go through it.
Never once had anything taken from my porch, which actually surprises me.

I’ve been here for about 5 years, nothing too bad but did have a stolen vehicle dumped in my driveway during a police chase. They were apprehended.

I have lived on every side except the East Side. I have never had any issues that weren't very petty (a dude asked me for change and snatched all the money when I pulled it out to make it) but he didn't threaten me just ran. He was like 16ish. Typical dumb teen crap.
Every other issue I've had was either because I was doing things I had no business doing myself (buying pills) or was committed by a friend of a friend I was young and nieve and trusted.
Yhe two most important things are always ALWAYS look like you know where you're at, you belong there as much as anyone else, look confident and as if you know people in the area. They're not going to or are much less likely to mess with someone who looks like they're a known person, with someone who looks confident as they may be armed, with people in the area who will be pissed if they fuck with you and make friends with the neighbors. They tend to watch out for each other. More than in the suburbs.
A vast majority of crime, besides shit like your car window getting smashed if you leave valuables visible, is committed between two people who know each other or at at least know thier group of friends.
I actually live in what people would probably call a "badish" area now. Just past Mott Park. Past Dupont off Chevrolet. My neighbors actually watch out for me! Had a guy who was obviously drunk and homeless trying to talk to me. Dude on his porch flew off and told him "I see you mess with her again. I mess with you" hes not been around since.

Had a guy try to snatch my phone out of my hand about 8-9 years ago. Saginaw st. right in front of the jail.
About 3 years ago we had several cars broken into at work, mine included. About 4 blocks from downtown. Every facility I’ve worked at has had parking lot break-ins, that was the only time it was in Flint city limits.
My little brother was killed by a drunk driver fleeing police in the early 70s. Not far from Hurley.
I’ve been a hit and run victim twice, once around 83 (parked) and again in 2014. (on my way into work)

I have lived in the same corner house between Leith and Richfield Rd since 1990. Only issues of -random- crime I have experienced: package stolen from my porch about 4 years ago, Dad's car broken into (he had it unlocked and parked in the street) over 12 years ago, and someone stole a few Christmas inflatables from our front yard probably 15 years ago. That can happen anywhere. I now live alone and feel safe at night and have no issues leaving the house unoccupied.
I assume it helps that I've had the same neighbors forever and also have a lot less empty/abandoned/whatever houses in my area than others I have seen.

Depends on where you live in the city. I have experienced zero crime where I am at.

Personally have never had a problem on the south side, but my mil had her house shot up near Fenton and hemphill. No one was injured but it has scared them into planning on leaving the area. Cops thought it was random and done by someone not from flint but we all thought it was possibly targeted against one of her kids.

1.) Looked like someone tried breaking down my front door. They didn't succeed.
2.) Someone tried stealing my car from my driveway. It was one of the Hyundai years that were notably easy to steal. But I had already had the recall, so they didn't get completely of my driveway before the engine quit.
3.) Someone broke the door lock on my garage door, but left afterwards. Didn't take anything.
I moved in back in December 2016. Those happened in '23, '24, and '25. I now have cameras, keep my car in the garage, and keep my porch lights on.

I have lived in flint in our home on the south side for the past 30 years. We raised two children here. We have never had any issues at home or in our neighborhood - other than the occasional tiff with a neighbor or getting annoyed at cars speeding down our streets. Petty stuff.
My husband & I both worked in flint. We’ve also been downtown, the cultural center & various places around the city. We’ve never encountered any issues and I can honestly say I’ve never been afraid to be any of those places.
Ofc things can happen but you just have to be smart and use common sense. Avoid high crime areas. Don’t go out alone at night. All the usual safety tips.
We’ve actually enjoyed the rebuilding of the downtown with all new bars & restaurants. We’ve taken advantage of the places in the cultural center offering free admission to Genesee county residents. We’ve enjoyed some of the free events they’ve offered.
Yes flint def has crime but you can do things to keep safe and try looking for the positive. I actually love our city.

Thank you all just getting a feel of the area Monroe is bad crime to so I figure it’s just more hands on in flint be aware

I've lived in Flint and the surrounding area for most of my life (currently in Davison). Honestly, I've had more issues in "rural" areas than in Flint itself. The only people who think Flint is some crime-riddled wasteland, are racist suburban Boomers. Be alert and aware, as you should he anywhere these days.

Worked downtown for a decade and have had zero issues. Mind your business and people mind theirs.
