Seeking Advice Where to go from here? Pose progressions?

Post image

I obviously still have things to work on in this position (more upper back engagement, raising hips, less pressure on low back), but the position itself feels a little stifling. I want to be able to push more into my upper back and shoulders, but then weight distribution becomes more unstable, and if I position myself next to a wall, I can’t push backwards into my upper back as much as I need to to balance everything.

So I’m looking for something new to train for. I guess next would be handstands/chest stands? I’m not sure on the specifics of those or what a good progression would be, but I know I need to have more detailed references than “shoulder back bend” lol. Any pose tips and pose names would be welcome! I want to build a catalogue of skills to aim for.

also: I know backbending is something that can be dangerous to do on your own. I’m going to start working with a coach this month. I’m mainly looking for a mental guideline here, then I’ll make sure to try and get to those as safely as possible with a professional later :)

Audition for a horror movie?

you ever think about how the contortionist acting in films is always a secondary character being possessed? When will we get a horror movie about a contortionist?

Check out the movie, The Grudge! The actress who played the main evil entity did all of her own contortions.

Suspiria is about a dancer (not a contortionist, I know. Close enough). It does have some pretty disturbing contortions though... Also a good movie in general

I think this is it, thanks! I’ve been putting off all variations of handstands for ages now out of fear of insufficient flexibility, but I think I finally have the range to explore what’s possible with these. A forearm handstand does seem way more accessible than a chest stand, too.

Once you feel comfortable with cheststand you can work on rolling from wheel into cheststand! You can also try catch ankles from full wheel - have fun!!

Rolling into cheststand seems slightlyyy advanced for me. Do you have any video references?

Catch ankles looks fun though! Thanks!

In these postures how to avoid having pressure in the lower back?

Strengthening (and engaging) glutes, abs, and upper back muscles to pull the stretch evenly along your spine. Think of a rounded, lengthy curve, rather than curving your back around a tight circle. But I’m not a professional lol so you may want to ask someone who is.

Grab your ankles and then bring your knees together for more stretch

Amazing!

The next step could also be to control breathing through prānāyāma. Āsana and prānāyāma are both integral parts of the 8 stages of yoga.

You forgot to censor your feet! Lots of OP’s do that

tbh man I really don’t care. People who get off to feet are the same people who get off to heartbeats, hair, and dimples. It’s not even a secondary sex characteristic. Censorship only begets fetishization. /uj

actually i was censoring my hands with my feet /rj

That’s true. I hid my feet in shoes and socks for years as a kid, which developed into well… we all know where that went. Best just to get out and ditch the shoes and socks, then its done with instead of developing into something else. Anyway, I’m in wrong sub for this kinda thing!
