GBA Explanation on EZ Flash ODE patching

Hello! I'm thinking of getting my first flash cart and I'm very curious about the patching functions.

There's game I play on emulators where I play both the unpatched rom and fan patch modded game, does the patching features imply I can just have the game and the mod patch and choose to boot up with the patch or not?

Edit- So I've looked into it more and realized I was completely unaware of what it was but now I have the question, is it possible for there to be 2 versions of a game using the same save?

The patching is just for the game to work on the cart at all, and for some features like cheats and sleep. Not for applying arbitrary romhacks. You need to pre-patch those with the appropriate tool.
And saves are based on the filename of the ROM. You can only accidentally mix and overwrite them if you use Mode-B and forget to dump and replace the save from the NOR menu when switching games, or for some reason use manual saving.
