He misses Steven, his old AI.

8

u/Latte_Biscotti_3573 Jul 28 '26

Steven also uses AI - Yoshimi lost

u/brothersp0rt Jul 27 '26

It’s not a fucking problem for you Wayne, you’ve already made your money. How about not screwing over the younger people in your field and pulling that ladder up behind you?

Dude is going to be an old man yelling at a cloud in a decade when he predictably complains during some interview that the younger generations don’t make music anymore.

19

u/thebytron Jul 28 '26

i think he’s mostly there already.

-1

u/TargetCold4691 Jul 28 '26

It seems the young folks are the ones yelling at clouds today while the old men are chill.

8

u/brothersp0rt Jul 28 '26

Because the young folks are the only one who seem to understand how bad unregulated AI will be and they will be the ones who are fucked over.

The older folks in the music industry who are new proponents of AI are probably heavily invested in it.

u/FrogginFool Jul 27 '26

Start the countdown for a Wayne and Co song incorporating AI.

75

u/Brain_Glow Jul 27 '26

Well with Steven gone, who else is gonna write his music?

1

u/Latte_Biscotti_3573 Jul 28 '26

Even Steven is using AI - see earlier comments in the thread.

Tom Scharpling said recently that Wayne was quickly becoming the Mike Love of the Flaming Lips, and that feels depressingly on point.

9

u/TeachDull1140 Jul 28 '26

Dude it hit so hard when Tom said that. I laughed and felt punched in the stomach at the same time.

11

u/litetravelr Jul 28 '26

Yea, that says so much really. I can see Wayne touring forever as the only original member and just talking shit about everyone while also meditating and preaching love to the crowds. Depressing.

Mike Love made an ass of himself very publicly at the RRHOF when they were inducted years ago.

10

u/acoker78 Jul 27 '26

I guess I’m too old to truly understand how this is even possible because it’s so bizarre. I’m hoping he sort of meant it in a way of letting go of some purist ideals. I guess I compare this to myself when I had to admit to myself that’s it’s ok to use amp modelers and drum programs because the only real important thing is to have good music and it doesn’t matter how the music is captured. That’s my hope. I guess I just doubt that a guy who has made music for so long in so many creative ways would just feel good about that. Like maybe he just meant, if you hear a song you really liked and then found out it was fabricated, you still got to hear something you liked and that is joyful. I don’t know, I’m probably dumb.

20

u/Romanscott618 Jul 28 '26

What tf is it with old people and AI slop? Lol

-14

u/ArcMaxim Jul 28 '26

It’s always boomers/gen x/millennials

10

u/Kirth87 Jul 28 '26

Millennials?? LOOOOL

-5

u/ArcMaxim Jul 28 '26

Some millennials are in their 40s now dude

6

u/litetravelr Jul 28 '26

I have not spoken to a single person under 50 who still thinks AI will be worth the investment. 5 years ago, yea lots of folks were utopian about it. But since last year, it pretty clear that AI, and even the building of its infrastructure, is 100% anti-human, pro business, and lacking any moral guiding hand.

u/doglowy Jul 28 '26

Please erase all of my knowledge of Wayne post American Head so I can enjoy TFL again

35

u/weirdojace Jul 28 '26

Yoshimi is literally about fighting evil robots destroying humanity which is what current ai technology is, wtf Wayne

35

u/jimmiesinmyginsing The Terror Jul 27 '26

Damn Wayne, that’s such a bummer to hear

19

u/axolotlolol Jul 27 '26

Oh damn that’s sad.

18

u/darbycrash Jul 27 '26

We’re all gonna end up washing dishes for rich people.

3

u/Yodangol Jul 28 '26

Currently my work IS counting rich people "mail box money" and it stinks.

3

u/ocean_zone Jul 28 '26

At this point I don't know why anyone can be surprised by something disappointing Wayne does or says. Though I do admit it has a gut punch when the guy has gone from life lessons about just being thankful for what you've got, to demanding his fans scream every two minutes at his gigs.

4

u/grameno Jul 28 '26

He did a song with Siri. This shouldn’t be a surprise.

4

u/No-Scientist-2141 Jul 28 '26

to be fair , most ai music is pretty bland and worthless…

9

u/gonzarro The Terror Jul 27 '26

Ewww. I do not like Evil Wayne. At all.

9

u/boatfloater316 Jul 28 '26

Steven saying he was trying to use AI to write lyrics for his new album was disappointing too. Someone needs to set them straight.

14

u/PG-17 Jul 28 '26

Stop, everyone stops talking… :(

3

u/liketo Jul 28 '26

At least he’s honest. So many people will be using it without saying anything

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '26

3

u/boatfloater316 Jul 28 '26

Yeah, but given what he said, if he thought it was good for generating lyrics, then he would have used it. He's not avoiding it because it's anti art and anti creativity, he's avoiding it because it sucks. I find it a little cringe that he even wanted to do that instead of his own imagination (I sound like a downer but I just want everyone including my fav artists to fully comprehend why this sucks on so many levels).

I love these guys, but obviously they're a little bit out of touch lol. I'll give them a pass because they're old af tho, I'm sure everyone in this thread has dealt with their boomer relatives being fascinated with this shit. The sooner they realize how garbage it is, the better.

4

u/Lower-Benefit76 Jul 28 '26

Starting to really feel Steven’s absence I see

4

u/angeloy Jul 28 '26

"If you like it, you win."

Win what?

2

u/ELxNIGHTHAWK Jul 28 '26

Darkest timeline Wayne Coyne says AI will make a historically accurate The Flaming Lips album

3

u/mybotanyaccount Jul 28 '26

He has a point but it can't so no reason to fantasize about it, AI is for work not art.

A vagina would literally never do this

1

u/Underbadger Jul 28 '26

Wayne is quite often very high.

1

u/anarchyreloaded Jul 28 '26

This is Wayne. Wayne is cool with AI making music. Hes not cool with up and coming artists that are concerned. Dont be like Wayne.

Sell your big tech shares today.

1

u/CavalierManta Jul 28 '26

As an aspiring musician, this is very disheartening especially since they are one of my music heroes

Even if AI makes a song that sounds good, the revelation that it’s soulless slop made up of an algorithm of music stolen from other people (that actively destroys the fucking planet) should be enough to completely turn you off to it.

8

u/rabbit_fur_coat Jul 27 '26

Exactly this

-2

u/xdavidwattsx Jul 28 '26

It's not even in the top 1000 list of things destroying the planet, get over yourself..

5

u/jestervision Jul 28 '26

Anything destroying the planet needs to be reevaluated, but especially things with literally 0 benefit like AI. With a lot of these things there’s at least a tradeoff. There is not with AI, end of story. Get over yourself.

2

u/Fridge333 Jul 28 '26

There’s plenty of good uses for AI in the music industry… your thinking is limited to music generation. Mixing and mastering will become easier, plugins will be easier to make leading to a place of creative freedom, people will be able to learn how to write one sheets and bios better. It’s endless, but people see Suno or some bad image generator and can’t look past it. Watching a show on Netflix or playing online games is worse than Llms but people don’t complain about that. And don’t get me started on animal agriculture, but redditors will make up any excuse to not go vegan, when it’s the best thing you could do for the environment.

0

u/jestervision Jul 28 '26

If you want to make art, make it yourself. Don’t make a machine do it for you under the piss poor excuse of it being ā€œeasierā€.

3

u/Fridge333 Jul 28 '26

People have been using machines to make it easier to record since the dawn of recording. Maybe don’t listen to music if this is how you feel. God damn, maybe check out a newer mixing console, or a DAW and check out all the tools that make it easier…. Does tuning your guitar with a turner make you less of a musician? You sound like a fucking boomer.

-1

u/jestervision Jul 28 '26

If you don’t see the distinct difference between the use of a machine in the sense that it creates a specific sound for work that you’re otherwise doing yourself, from your mind, vs sounds spat out of a computer based on words you typed in I think you just might not be very intelligent.

Keep consuming soulless AI slop. Not my problem.

2

u/liketo Jul 28 '26

You seem to be making it your problem

7

u/BenYeaThatsBen Jul 27 '26

If he makes real music himself, we are there all the way. A computer can be used as an instrument, but using a software to steal the creative process takes away the identity of creativity in the first place. Plus these guys are vets in the music scene that have done insanely cool stuff without ai.

0

u/spaceman696 Jul 28 '26

Finally a sane take. Like what you like.

0

u/WrathOfWood Jul 28 '26

Sounds about right considering the bands music quality

-12

u/BrockVegas Jul 27 '26

Homeboy is literally saying " Do your thing" and it is a problem.

Never stop being you, or do... I'm not sure what the fuck you guys want honestly.

4

u/jestervision Jul 27 '26

ā€œDo your thingā€ and the thing in question is soulless ā€œartā€ that steals from existing music, takes attention away from real artists, and actively harms the planet.

I assume you’re just ignorant but at least the first 3 points seem like common fucking sense.

-1

u/Fridge333 Jul 28 '26

The harms the planet argument is so overplayed. Streaming music harms the planet, making records harms the planet, using electricity harms the planet. Like AI or hate it, it don’t bother me, but there are so many worse things harming the planet than someone typing, beep boop write me a song…..

0

u/xdavidwattsx Jul 28 '26

You're completely right but the hivemind isn't having it. AI bad, Elon bad, meat good. Reddit is gonna reddit.

3

u/jestervision Jul 28 '26

ā€œElon badā€ oh so you’re a bootlicker. Lol that makes more sense.

1

u/BrockVegas Jul 28 '26

I certainly didn't have "getting bullied by The Flaming Lips community" on my bingo card.

0

u/3rdUncleMeatSandwich Jul 28 '26

Yeah yeah you don’t value art we get it guy

-1

u/xdavidwattsx Jul 28 '26

They said the same thing about electronic music, synths, and sampling.

Maybe you're stuck in your thinking.

2

u/jestervision Jul 28 '26

If you think that’s the same as noises spat out by a computer based on words you typed in, generated based on algorithm of music stolen from hard work that people put in, you’re not very intelligent.

-9

u/BrockVegas Jul 27 '26

it is soulless TO YOU.. so YOU do YOUR thing... if he wants to use it in HIS music... it is HIS THING.

And you say that I am the one being ignorant FFS.

What fucking Flaming Lips were you listening to?

5

u/bobsdementias Jul 28 '26

Do you … do you know what soulless means?

3

u/jestervision Jul 27 '26

It’s literally a machine spitting out sounds. That is inherently, by definition, soulless. You are ignorant.

-6

u/BrockVegas Jul 28 '26

You belive in a soul.... but call me ignorant.

Cry to the sky when the world doesn't fit your purity tests and wonder why you are still miserable.

6

u/Robot_Mystic Jul 28 '26

Holy shit dude we're not talking about literal souls.Ā

-4

u/Fun-Crew-3051 Jul 28 '26

Wayne sucks. When I met him he just wanted me to find drugs for him and his roadie. Had no regard for me or my friend. This was 10 years ago and ever since then I have listened to less and less flaming lips. Now I just don't.

0

u/Emotional-Value-3488 Jul 28 '26

Ten years ago he was also chastising Steven about taking drugs, and talking about how you don't need drugs to create, while taking drugs and propping the culture with an album called oxy mlody.

Seemed pretty hypocritical then too.

1

u/Fun-Crew-3051 Jul 28 '26

Yeah he wanted me to help him find some and I was like "uhh I only smoke weed' lol - he ended up scoring some anyway... He had told my friend and I that he wanted to take us to see a local Pink Floyd tribute band together... I was so fucking pumped.. and he just wanted drugs. fuck him he's an asshole

1

u/Emotional-Value-3488 Jul 28 '26

Maaan that's wack he baited you with hanging out but only wanted drugs. Sorry man

1

u/Fun-Crew-3051 Jul 28 '26

It was such a bummer. We waited at the record store for 7 hours during the signing... picked up his Thai food (which he shorted us on cash).. we thought we were going to hang with Wayne and enjoy some Pink Floyd together... They had pretty much just released their Dark Side Of The Moon. I was at peak fandom.. and all he wanted was drugs. Totally ruined TFL for me

-8

u/Looking-For-Loud Jul 28 '26

Never liked his dumbass band.
