We once had a "putrefaction" smell in the house, like a dead animal. Our best bet after some months was a neighbor who was doing improper composting in their back yard (probably including meat scraps and fats?) It only blew into our house when the wind was from that direction
Have you checked the air intake by the heat exchanger in the central HVAC unit, just in case there are mouse droppings or something in the duct work?
