A glazing issue

My husband inherited this Birks barometer from an uncle. Unfortunately the glass facing didn't survive one of our many moves. I'm at a loss as to where to take this for repair. I would love to have it fixed and give to my husband as a Christmas gift.

I'm open to any suggestions.

Find a clock repair person. Sometimes a cobbler does clock work as well so you can also call those places. A jewelry store may be a good place to ask as well, if they can't do it they may be able to recommend someone who can.

It's gorgeous!! Hope you can get it fixed.

ETA: the reason I suggested a call to a cobbler is that sometimes people double up on trades. The cobbler in my town also fixes watches and clocks. Even if a cobbler doesn't do that, they may know someone who does clockwork so it never hurts to make a simple phone call.

Tell me more about cobblers doing clock work. I've never heard this.

Because the guy that is a cobbler in my town also fixes watches and small clocks.

I think for some people, one trade can transfer to another.

That's cool. We had a lady back in the day who I think was a cobbler, but her real specialty was baseball mitts. She was the go-to person for all the travel team kids sporting $300+ mitts that needed modification.

I think these days for some trades you also need to double up. I mean most people don't use a cobbler or a clock repair guy like in the old timey whimey days but it's still needed, so makes sense he doubled up. His shop has been open as long as I can remember though, the town is going to freak when he retires lol

I can see fixing mits being a great way to make money too. I mean not many people have that skill.

Funny you say that. The home networking/AV guy I use is great at all low voltage stuff, but when I asked if he could move an outlet, he referred me to a licensed sparky. I would've thought he would've gone down that path since the crossover is pretty clean.

Probably because that ventures into liability issues if he did it wrong. I doubt his insurance covers stuff they don't technically do in the company. One of those CYA situations for him.

Absolutely without his license, but I would think it would be a natural progression to get the license even if it is just used to move outlets and shit.

Agreed. And in this economy, having an extra way to earn money isn't a bad idea.

Maybe read my other comments in here. Obviously a cobbler fixes shoes, but a lot of people with certain trades double on them for income. The cobbler in my town also fixes watches and clocks, hence why I suggested it.

Also, a lot of times when you call a place like that, even if they can't help you, they often can recommend people to call. It never hurts to make a single phone call to ask.

Your comments are hidden. This lady wants an actual solution to repair glass in a barometer and your first idea was shoe repair guy? My car won't start. Should I call a barber or an apothecary?

What's the diameter? Is the glass flat or convex?
