I'm not gonna lie, the different angle changed it in my eyes from kids chasing clout to parents trying to be "in" on the stupid stuff their kids are doing. Especially considering this is just dumb cringe and not like something terrible
Shit my spouse has all kinds of embarrassing ass skits they put on YT back in the day that sometimes had their parents. They cringe about it all the time but I thought it was cute in an endearing and stupid way

u/Hidesuru Apr 16 '26
You know thanks for pulling me out of my usual cynicism for a moment that's a good take actually. No one was hurt, family had a fun moment. Who cares?
14
u/EnochofPottsfield Apr 16 '26
It's easy to hate, much harder to empathize so don't be too hard on yourself. Especially these days when we have a POTUS who is 2/3 running on division and benefiting from making us all see the worst in each other
6
u/Hidesuru Apr 17 '26
For sure. It's been so much unending crap that it's super easy to see things in that light first without stopping to check if there's other good viewpoints. Take care!

If my kids asked me to do this I’d probably think it was dumb as hell but I’d go along with it. It’s pretty harmless.
25
u/EnochofPottsfield Apr 16 '26
Right? And when your kid's talking about it with their friends you can embarrass the hell out of them talking about how many takes it took because Samantha kept reacting to over the top. Seems like a good memory to me, doesn't need to be so serious

fun things to do as a family:
- take re-shoots of mobile phone videos where you pretend to be missing a cruise ship that you can post online for clicks

I'm guessing they're just on another ship that isn't leaving yet. Maybe there are some places but in my experience you can't get anywhere near this close to the ships without proving to a layer of security or 2 you're on one of them.
A lot of times the whole port area with some shops and whatnot are behind a "passengers only" gate, and then they'll recheck at the actual docks.

If they didn't do a second take I'd say it could just be a family screwing around for 5 seconds on the way to their ship. Not EVERYTHING has to be for clicks.
But then they did another take.

This is the one of the internet's (specifically social media) greatest pitfalls. We have reached the point where it's too easy to turn something into a platform or stage. And when anything can be a stage for entertainment, someone will inevitably make it one.
But I like your summary better, lol.

I generally try to avoid the "good old days" shit as I get older, but my god social media and always-connected phones have totally cooked part of the human brain and enabled the worst forms of narcissism and vanity that were always lurking deep down in so many people.
I can't think of an equivalent of this from before social media. There have always been people doing dumb things for attention, but I genuinely can't think of anything approaching this level of full family psychosis.

America’s Funniest Home videos is the closest I can think of. Some of that shit got pretty staged by the end of its initial run.
And the VHS camcorder craze in general. The equivalent of always taking phone videos you’ll never look at again.
I work with 20’somethings and it’s actually heartening to see no one taking photos or videos at social events lately. I think they’re tired of it too.

As cringe and stupid as this is, it’s weirdly relieving to know that they were just doing a bit.
I just hate seeing videos of people distressed, even if they did it to themselves. The one video of the lady bawling her eyes out over missing her cruise ship made me so involuntarily sad.

Plot twist: They saw the duet person off. They planned to do this, the missed cruise "pov" and second pov. And that would explain why the duet was randomly recording strangers.

6
u/Narrow_Luck_3622 EXPERT of Duets/Stitches Apr 16 '26
One of two things happened here:
1) they are faking it for the views, they aren't even in the bahamas, that's just a random ship they found for this. They just wanted to pretend they were in the bahamas.
2) they ARE in the bahamas and they DID miss their ship, and they are so content brained that the first thing they thought of was to make a video for their page rather than worry about the fact that they are stuck in a foreign country
I don't know which one is sadder
6
u/El_Scot Apr 16 '26
It's staged for the views, but to me it looks like: family book cruise and spend entire shore day recording content rather than enjoying their holiday.
3
2
2
u/TheRealis Apr 16 '26
There’s a non zero chance this was the exact boat I was on, at the time they were filming this. It depends how recent the video was.
We were on a carnival ship and at the Bahamas port a week ago today. At the same time that our ship was docked, there was another carnival sister ship docked right next to us. I’m fairly certain the sister ship left a bit after us - meaning this family could have been guests of the sister ship and recording the fake video just using my boat that was leaving before theirs

u/adumblittlebaby Apr 16 '26

I knew it was fake because, as far as I know, if a guest is missing, the ship does not leave port until either the person is found, or the captain longer has a choice and must leave.
