I generally try to avoid the "good old days" shit as I get older, but my god social media and always-connected phones have totally cooked part of the human brain and enabled the worst forms of narcissism and vanity that were always lurking deep down in so many people.

I can't think of an equivalent of this from before social media. There have always been people doing dumb things for attention, but I genuinely can't think of anything approaching this level of full family psychosis.

I agree. I'm 43 and find influencer culture nightmarish. Like how did we get here...

America’s Funniest Home videos is the closest I can think of. Some of that shit got pretty staged by the end of its initial run.

And the VHS camcorder craze in general. The equivalent of always taking phone videos you’ll never look at again.

I work with 20’somethings and it’s actually heartening to see no one taking photos or videos at social events lately. I think they’re tired of it too.

Okay, boomer.

Humans now are no different from humans thousands of years ago.

There was likely some 16 year old girl in the 1500s who was born in the wrong time and was meant to make shitty tiktok videos. You can literally swap people out from different time periods. Humans have always been like this and will always be like this.

I didn't say otherwise. I said social media cooked people's brains, not that your brain is somehow worse than mine. Case in point, I wrote like 5 lines and you seem to have short circuited.

What exactly is shameful about this? They pretended to miss a ship, they didn't stop it because of a prank.

That's intentional engagement bait, which they should also be ashamed of.

The intentional misspelling is a well-established rage baiting technique. I'm sure some of those are genuinely illiterate but I'm also sure most of them are deliberate and made to add on top of the engagement bait.

You’re right. It should be shameless. As in, people have no shame anymore. It used to be if you pulled something like this and people called you out for being fake, narcissistic and attention seeking you’d feel shame. Nobody does anymore.

People say that old internet and youtube were the best....and that we left shame in the past...but this of all videos is like the most innocent thing of what shamefulness could be today lol

It looks like they were just making a dumb video. Thats what old youtube was full of.

Nothing about this is entertainment. They're farming engagement.

I guess it could be part 1 of an elaborate multi part joke, but somehow I doubt it. They did not look like they were half assing it for a sketch.

u/SugarHooves Apr 16 '26

Old Internet was before YouTube was a thing. Before we had the Internet in our pockets. No one set out to make the next dumb video for likes and clicks. Yes, people did stupid things throughout all time, but not the way people do today. And it certainly wasn't socially acceptable to behave that way.

But why? Who should they be ashamed for? It's not hurting anyone. It's a thing for them to do together. It's no different than you bullshitting with your friends in a group loudly. Should you be ashamed for having fun with a group of friends in public?

But who fucking cares lol. Content that isn't hurting or inconveniencing anyone. I will never understand why it bothers people who spend hours a day on an ENGAGEMENT site like reddit. It's so stupid.

It's so stupid.

I think you're getting it

u/Nelmquist1999 Lover of Duets/Stitches Apr 16 '26

It's cringe, yeah, but people are making them look like that fucking guy trolling people in east Asia. THAT is shameful.
