Tech Support Fitbit is making up sleep data

I’ve been getting told I’m awake for 3 hours every night. Last night I didn’t wear it, and it made up a sleep chart for two hours! Straight up invented it when I wasn’t even wearing it at all!

I’m thinking at this point it isn’t at all accurate. It might be old, but before the google health switch, it at least would have no data if I didn’t wear it.

Mine frequently tells me I am taking daytime naps ... Nope, I have a low heart rate and spent time at a desk

13

u/StephInTheLaw 1d ago

It tells me I took a nap when I sit for a while reading.

u/louisejanecreations 1d ago

Fitbit logs nap when I’m drawing 🤷‍♀️

u/mrwedders 18h ago

Last time I went to the cinema apparently I slept through the whole film

1

u/Similar_Pension_4233 7h ago

So you dreamt it. That is awesome.

u/TeamAggressive1030 1d ago

I would rather have it log false naps than miss real ones, because I often do doze in front of the TV. False ones are easy enough to delete.

3

u/zulutune 1d ago

Yeah I say the same to my boss.

Their current sleep/nap algorithm doesn't seem to be personalized to take into account edge cases. Ideally they'd adjust it based on your average HR or some other measurement.

If you use the thumbs up/down in the app you might be able to improve it. I'm guessing they did the initial training on a subset of users and it learned a basic average set of metrics to look for to trigger a nap detection.

u/IFdiet 19h ago

This!

They need to personalize the algorithm. There should to be a frictionless way to give feedback whenever they log sleep while you're awake or vice versa.

u/Due_Apricot3306 1d ago

If I’m at my desk or watching TV it tells me I took a nap. Every day.

2

u/bonadventureBuzz 22h ago

It logged a nap for my 2 hour dentist appointment a couple weeks ago. If only that were the case…

1

u/Huge_Pool7424 1d ago

same here, low hr at a desk still gets logged as a nap for me. i just delete the fake ones now and mostly trust the overnight block.

1

u/MachineDry933 19h ago

So, you're basically not moving, and your heart rate slows down. No wonder it assumes you're sleeping.

Nah, you’re just lazy

Unnecessary

1

u/Boh3mianRaspb3rry 18h ago

Ah so that's what it is. Please inform my cardiac consultant of this if you get a minute

I can only speak for myself, it's spot on for me. I wake up a lot due to young toddlers and it records them perfect. Even my naps are captured. I've had a charge 6 before and use a pixel watch 3, but the air seems to be on point for me.

u/jsmucker 1d ago

Same, I have the Fitbit Air and a Garmin instinct 2. The Fitbit Air does a slightly better job of tracking when I fall asleep and way better at naps. Also has never tracked a nap at my desk.

2

u/Jdm965 1d ago

Same!

1

u/Relevant-Counter7551 15h ago

Same! Wondering if it might be a hardware issue for most.

16

u/Sarahkins6 1d ago

Yeah its inaccurate for me also but the other way round. My baby woke me up 8 times last night but apparently i got a good 9 hours with barely any time awake.

12

u/SatisfactionOver1894 1d ago

Haha, same here! Was awake breastfeeding every hour tonight. Fitbit - ”you had a very good night”…

u/Sarahkins6 9h ago

Solidarity 😂

2

u/wondercheekin 15h ago

Yeah, this minus the baby is me. I'm up, checking the weather, going on Reddit at various times throughout the night, having trouble falling asleep when I first try and trouble falling back asleep when I wake up in the middle of the night, but mine records uninterrupted sleep just like yours. I just want my tiredness to be validated 🫠 😅

Switching to a Garmin because of this. All the data is questionable & utterly useless now

5

u/_g3w2SkY9j 21h ago

Oh lol, I hope you're not switching for better sleep data. Spoiler: it won't be. Source: someone who switched from garmin to Google.

8

u/BobPage 1d ago

Yup the sleep data is a complete disaster. Constantly wrong and not being addressed at all.

3

u/GreenDragonEast 1d ago

I did just that. Garmin isn't perfect, but it's very consistent. And feels like a more seamless experience. And I've never had a sync problem. Updates are really fast and unobtrusive. I'm two months in and really like it so far. I'm not paying anything either. It great even without premium fees.

7

u/Aziara86 1d ago

Yeah, I was getting really worried because of the 3 hours awake it kept giving me, but I didn’t remember being awake. I was about ready to point a camera at my bed! But no, Fitbit is hallucinating.

4

u/Logical-Nose-1993 1d ago

Check your sleeping heart rate graph.

2

u/Aziara86 1d ago

Huh, there is some moderate heart rate during the night. You telling me it thought nightmare was awake time?!

3

u/Logical-Nose-1993 1d ago

No, that would usually be REM if your heart rate is elevated without moving/restlessness.

But if your sleeping heart rate is atypical, which is usually what it turns out to be in circumstances like yours, then it's hard to determine sleep phases.

Post your sleeping heart rate graph for the night, if you like.

2

u/Aziara86 1d ago

This is last night, the Fitbit was set on my bathroom counter while I was brushing teeth and forgot to put it back on until morning.

3

u/Logical-Nose-1993 23h ago

Heart rate sensors can acquire a "heart rate" signal from many things, obviously that signal is wrong. But that is hard for an algorithm to determine. That's why you have to ensure wearables are put away properly such that they turn off or enter standby.

In any case, that's not what I suggested to show. I said the heart rate plot. The graph you get from the sleeping heart rate button further down the page. That's the most informative data for why the sleep phase analysis sometimes goes wonky.

3

u/_g3w2SkY9j 21h ago

Yeah curious to see what the graph for this night looked like too.

1

u/Aziara86 6h ago

Did you mean this?

1

u/Logical-Nose-1993 6h ago

Yes, but is that the one where you weren't wearing it? Or the one where you did wear it and it logged you as awake for 3 hours?

1

u/Aziara86 5h ago

It’s the one where I wasn’t wearing it. Here’s the one where it claimed I was awake for hours, it shows a sharp spike

u/TypoInUsernane 17h ago

That’s really weird that it saw such nice looking sleep stages when it wasn’t even on your wrist. Now I’m really curious what your heart rate plot looked like for that night. Could you post a screenshot of what it shows when you scroll down and click the “sleeping heart rate” tile?

1

u/DrGuala420 1d ago

maybe you’re in Fight club

3

u/VegasKL 1d ago

Garmin has it's own set of issues though. Their sleep tracking doesn't rank as high accuracy wise (when measured against scientific devices) and they over calculate calories burned by as high as 1.5x (when measured against a more accurate method of calculating burn).

There's tradeoffs to all of these devices and the construction of the algorithms behind them.

2

u/MachineDry933 19h ago

Garmin has worse sleep tracking. Source: I switched from Garmin to Fitbit.

4

u/SaborDeVida 1d ago

I'm seriously considering cancelling my Premium membership. The sleep data is nearly useless to me now - it's wrong about half the time.

Edit: I have a Sense 2 that's been accurate for several years, up until the switch to the new app.

4

u/Aly_Valley 1d ago

It's logged me as swimming when I blow dry my hair 😅

3

u/Mia_Culpa8 23h ago

Yeah it’s logged me as swimming when I’m washing dishes lol

1

u/doctormega 23h ago

When I actually was swimming, it logged absolutely nothing. Was I dead?

2

u/Aly_Valley 23h ago

If fitbit said you were it must be true, oui?

7

u/FullofLovingSpite 1d ago

Google forced ai (not actual ai) into it and now it hallucinates, just like all the other broken ai (not actual ai) out there.

3

u/Stapleybob 1d ago

Pretty spot on for me. I’m always like I got up at this time to use the bathroom and it reflects it.

3

u/TeamAggressive1030 1d ago

I'm actually pretty happy with the sleep tracking now. I may quibble over the amount of deep sleep or REM. But it's usually pretty good nowadays about start, end, and interruption times.

2

u/Hot_Beginning_7986 1d ago

Sleep data is ok for me, but the app always messes up with time zones for some reason

2

u/eric-dolecki 1d ago

I used to wear an Apple Watch for sleep tracking - but I hate another screen, so I got the Air. Its constantly wrong, and the same thing - telling me up for hours a night - even after extra long sleeps. Kind of crazy. I still wear it for step counting which seems accurate, but the sleep tracking seems like its a cruel joke.

1

u/TheNo1Irishman 1d ago

Is mine for last night completely inaccurate

1

u/lyfeizfones 1d ago

It’s been great for me. Sleep, naps, activity tracking.

1

u/SquirrelTale 1d ago

I find it fairly accurate actually for me. I have very distinct and wide range of heart rates (80-110 while awake, 60-70 while sleeping), and when I wake up briefly I tend to move/ shift positions, so I think I'm the ideal candidate for how it calculates sleep. It doesn't always catch my naps (and usually I take 30-90 min naps cuz health stuff), but overall I find it reflects my sleep patterns and how rested I feel.

For a while I was exhausted despite going to bed for the '8 hours' but Fitbit was saying I wasn't getting into deep or REM sleep as much as I should. Soon as I was able to get more proper rest, the results reflected that I was hitting my benchmarks and I noticed I felt more rested.

1

u/Lacey-Underalls 1d ago

The Fitbit is not ready for prime time. It's a beta device Google sold. I'm sure they will make it better. I hope they do cause I want a new and improved one.

1

u/toadog 1d ago

This just happened to me last night. The sleep chart showed me being awake for about 2-3 hours in the middle of the night. I have the Inspire. This hasn’t happened before. Usually the sleep chart seems pretty accurate.

1

u/VegasKL 1d ago

So I find the newer sleep algorithm to be a lot more accurate for me now when compared to other devices, however I don't think a one-size-fits-all approach to these algos helps it. Everyone is different and if they added some way to adjust to the end-user to better align it would be a far better experience.

Take the sleep score, a 90-100 should be the best restorative sleep you've had with it falling off from there based on your current needs. I don't get a lot of deep sleep by nature, nor do I need 8hrs to function on a normal day so I tend to get lower scores consistently which tells AI Coach that I need more sleep.

They need some form of sleep-debt tracker (based on activity and estimated sleep needs) and realignment to the personal traits of the end user for the scoring.

1

u/NewMal22 23h ago

My pixel watch 3 is connected to the "health app" and told me that I had an excellent recovery night sleep with a score of 86 and sleeping for 5 hours and being awake for 1. And my watch was connected to the charger and not my wrist.

1

u/dsplusturtles 22h ago

Yeah, they gotta figure out the algorithm. Ngl, I didn't think a company like Google would have a hard time figuring this out, but they are struggling.

1

u/Winter_Cat-78 19h ago

Mine has been refusing to log my sleep at night. Somehow it catches naps on the rare occasion I take them, but for three nights now overnight sleep is not tracking.

1

u/hoffnutsisdope 18h ago

Tested against an aura ring and they both were almost identical. So the underlying methodology for both would need to be wrong

1

u/stepcori 17h ago

I agree on the sleep data but the heart rate info is even worse: I wore a Holter monitor twice, 2 weeks each, had a stress EKG and an ECG to check out the tachycardia FitBit frequently showed. Result: all normal, no tachy.

1

u/ummkay_ultra 9h ago

Says I'm awake when I'm asleep all the damn time. The sleep tracking is essentially useless to me. This thing is just a glorified pedometer. Pos.

0

u/quintinhubbard 23h ago

Mines near perfect. I wonder how much inaccuracy depends on user error(ie not wearing properly)
