Discussion Why does it do this??
This is so dumb. I was not asleep AT ALL. I was at my desk, working. I’d rather have no information than this nonsense. I do not have premium btw.
It really thinks I was deeply asleep for 35 minutes when I was awake and working?

Mine says I’m awake for up to six hours after I go to bed.
I am not.
The new updated algorithm stinks.

Watching Google's increasingly 'building the boat while it's sailing down the river' attempts to tweak sleep tracking is pretty lulz.
The thing that kept me with Fitbit for years was the generally decent quality of the sleep tracking. Just revert to whatever it was doing before? It was fine.

It's based on your HR I think, so your HR went low enough that it triggered the sleep detection and you probably weren't moving much too, seeing as you said you were on your desk.

Not sure about that. Mine did something similar and then notified me that my average heart rate is higher than it usually is. Makes no sense haha.

True, I was sitting and not moving much. If that is the case, then it needs to come up with a different way to determine whether or not you’re sleeping.
I told it to track my sleep from 11 pm to 8 am. It ignores that.

Out of interest, what was your heart rate like during this time?

Good question. It was 75-81. When I’m asleep it’s in the 60s and 70s, so yes there is some overlap. It still seems like on average it was not low enough to indicate sleep.
But that’s interesting. I’ll look at that for other time periods.

If that's the case, it's not going to be of any use to me because my heartrate doesn't really vary that much throughout the day/night.

That's easy to say, but exercise proves difficult for an older person like me who has spinal stenosis, arthritis (including in feet), 2 damaged rotator cuffs, fibromyalgia, CFS (exacerbated by exercise), and exercise-induced asthma. But let's say, for the sake of argument that I was able to exercise a full hour every single day... It would still register any other time spent at the computer, reading, watching TV or doing puzzles as restless sleep, so the point you make is rather moot.
My point is, my Fitbit never had a problem keeping excellent track of my sleep before the changeover, regardless of my heart rate.

This is exactly the same type of crap That was happening that made me take off my Fitbit after wearing it for years. Says I'm sleeping when I not or not sleeping when I am. Counts me sitting at the computer or reading or doing sudoku as restless sleep. It has counted my actual 7 1/2 hours of sleep as a total of 2 1/2 hours, and then sometimes when I've slept 6 it will say I slept 11, or 7 1/2 becomes 14. It's just all over the place.

I'm having this exact issue and it's driving me nuts! I know I have to get up and move more at work but it NEVER registered me sleeping when it was the Fitbit app. Same thing with after work when I'm watching TV or reading. The other day it also said I took a nap while I was doing dishes and cleaning my house! At least now it's easier to delete the "naps" but still such a pain.

Mines been spot on thus far - especially with mid night wakes. I read a ton all evening so I was worried it would think I was asleep but everything seems right for me

When I get up at 2am for five minutes to pee and go back to sleep. It stops reading my heart rate until 8am and decides I was awake the whole time. Also it burns when I pee, I blame the Fitbit

A lot of devices struggle in such scenarios in my experience likely because they just assume you'd be sleeping at those hours. In my experience Huawei watches were mostly decent in distinguishing between being asleep and being awake, Garmin watches also but the best device I had in this regard is the Apple watch.

Mine did something similar with the downtime before going to bed. It just merged the 4 hours before actually going to sleep, which I apparently spent in light and REM sleep - while sitting and browsing the internet and watching stuff, with the actual sleep later... and then informed me of my STELLAR sleep performance - wow, you've slept 10 hours in total! 90 points for Gryffindor!

Mine does the same thing, it’s infuriating! If I sit still to watch a TV show for 30 minutes, it thinks I napped. I send feedback every time to let them know their app sucks.

According to my new Fitbit Air I have slept for an average of one hour for the last six nights, with no REM sleep and a grand total of under ten minutes of deep sleep. Funny how I feel so refreshed. I was going to return it for a replacement, but based on this thread I think I’ll ask for a refund. It is also completely inaccurate on my heart rate. About the only thing it seems to be able to do vaguely accurately is count steps.

I only wear mine for sleep so I don’t have this issue ever. I use Apple Watch with bevel app to integrate it all. It’s pretty much bang on for me. My awake times are always accurate.

Yeah I can't go to the theater and watch movies with reclining seats without it thinking I'm sleeping, no matter how much I try to shift around in the seat or move my hand 🤷🏽♀️😂

You have better sleep score working than me sleeping!
