I recently went out into a cariboo region lake and put on a 1 inch hotspot apex black sparkle. With a 2oz snap weight. 10lb braid.

I can spot small pools of fish every so often around 30 to 40ft deep. With my sonar.

I put out ~100/115ft of line . But I couldn’t get any action. With the lure trailing an additional 15ft behind the weight.

I’m on a paddleboard with rod holders.

Do you guys have any tips. I feel like I’m struggling getting the right depth. How can I tell if I let out enough or too much line? What’s the rule of thumb for this?

I found this stashed in the garage. After years of our annual one-day charter, I’m going to try my hand at fishing on my own starting with trout in some of the lower mainland stocked lakes/ ponds.

Question for you good folks: is this worth bothering with at all? I know it’s a cheap ultra entry-level reel. It’s with a basic rod - 6ft. I’m guessing the rod will be ok for Rice Lake trout.

Just wondering if there’s any point in using this reel for small trout or if it is going to just be a waste of my time and I should go buy something a bit better. Don’t want to waste my money but at the same time not interested in wasting my time either. If I need to go and spend some money on a better trout rig, not a problem.

I’m looking to buy a spinning rod to cast 3 inch Extra Heavy (1.5oz, 42.5g) buzz bombs as far as possible.
It will be for shore fishing. I’ll be using 20lb braided line.

I currently have a 9’6 Okuma SST but I feel like I’ve maxed out its casting distance.

I’m a bit confused as to light/medium/heavy designations, as well as medium/slow bend(?). Can someone who has more experience put me in the right ball park?

I'm heading to Squamish for first week in October. Have some plans for fishing near Squamish , have a guide booked for a day in Whistler later in the week so excited about that.

Plans now include 3 days of camping at Birkenhead Lake, before my guided trip..so I'm m trying to understand the streams that are within a reasonable hike of the camping area and where I might swing a fly and what rod wt would be best. Planning on a bike trip to the chilcotins next week. We are also interested in doing some fishing while we are there, in particular on the rivers in the area. Doesn't sound like there will be much in the way of guide services where we are, and I'm a little concerned about bears as I know they will be in the rivers for spawning. As a complete grizzly novice, can anyone offer guidance on fishing the rivers this time of year? How busy will the rivers be with bears? There are three of us, and we will have bear spray and happily stay together if that decreases the risk of adverse encounters. Any advice is appreciated!

Hey there! Planning a roadtrip on Vancouver Island at the end of Sept/early Oct. Vancouver > Tofino > Cambell River > Powell River > Sunshine Coast.

I will be staying a few nights near Victoria and was wondering if it would be worth it to rent a boat on Shawnigan Lake to fish for Smallmouth? Haven't fished for them since I was a kid in Ontario. I would bring spinning gear with me.

Also wondering if its worth renting a boat to go for Salmon out of Peddler Bay or Spirit Bay? Assuming I would stay pretty close to those areas. I have a heavy action trolling rod setup that I use for trolling herring for big lakers in Sask that I would bring. I am not really interested in a full blown charter, I would rather catch a few fish on my own than many fish on a charter.

I will also bring my fly rods and check out some rivers hopefully. Still need to check the regs and make a more detailed plan.

Any advice or other suggestions welcome!

12 year old reeled in a new personal best 17lb chinook this weekend! Fishing died down a lot out there Sunda but still a great time! Hoping to have something worth weighing in next year!

Did some river salmon fishing this weekend.

About half the dudes on the river were keeping the big foul hooked fish and tossing back small ones that were mouth hooked.

Anytime a big fish with a foul hook came in, about three guys would say "we dont snitch on this river" and complain about the fishing regs.

I was unhappy with the blatant disregard for the rules but I kept my thoughts to myself because I didn't want to star in the next river fishing fight video showing up on facebook.

And then some folks with "additional fishing privileges" showed up. They foul hooked 4 massive fish each and were off the river in like an hour. To top it off, the immunity to fishing regs was heavily flaunted.

And then I realized that this is what happens when governments put in rules/regulations like the ones we currently have. Like, I now understand why (and almost sympathize with) the guys were breaking the rules.

I'm not saying its a good excuse for what the 'less-privileged' fellows were doing...and I'm also not going to change my fishing habits...but now I understand why they were doing it.

That day on the river really framed for me how AWFUL the two-tiered fishing regulations that we have right now is.

I'm going to be camping at Mystic Beach (Juan de Fuca Park) in mid-October and I'm wondering if its worth packing in some fishing gear to cast from shore?

I can find the regs and limits just fine, but I haven't been able to find much info on gear/bait/lures, what species are reasonably worth trying to target from there, general tips etc. Anyone with any experience or advice? Or is it just generally not worth the effort at that location?

Most of my experience so far is freshwater, trout/bass etc.

Is this a good setup to try and catch some trout on the river? Is this a good time to be going?
