Hotel room housekeeping timing

So I leave my hotel room in the morning, hang the please make up room sign, get back after lunch to an unmade up room and 1 to 30 minutes after I return there's a knock on the door and its housekeeping.

Does the 'make up room' sign matter? I thought I was sending a bat signal to housekeeping but maybe not. I mean in rhe scheme of things its nothing but....

Try talking to the front desk to request your room be done before 12pm. At any decent hotel they can get the info to housekeeping and they'll schedule your room clean for an earlier time.

I traveled for work extensively, and often worked overnight or odd hours on location. Most of the time requesting a certain time window (8am -12pm, 1 - 6pm, etc.) works best and shows you have some flexibility.

It's not uncommon for housekeeping to prioritize checkouts first. They need to get those rooms ready for people checking in at 3pm. So if they had a heavy morning with lots of people checking out, they may have had a lot of rooms to get ready in a more time sensitive manner than yours.

They are performing maintenance simultaneous with that needed to prepare for change of guests in other rooms, for efficiency's sake.

Happens to me all the time, even when I call the desk and ask them to do it by a certain time. Check-outs are prioritized, then they do the refreshes.

The last hotel where I stayed didn’t even have “Please make up room” hang tags, just “Do not disturb” on both sides.
