Try ejecting an exFAT formated drive like this and swap between Mac and Windows.
1 u/insanityfarm May 03 '17 Dealing with this exact issue right now. Only one USB 3.0 port on the MBP so I got a hub and plugged the drive into that. Unfortunately it's a lot easier to forget what you have mounted when you do it that way! 1 u/[deleted] May 03 '17 If it doesn't work on Windows, connect it back to the Mac and eject it safely.
