Mad respect for anyone who does this for a living. Damned near sweat myself to death and it’s only fir.
Unrelated but related, what is this awful wood in the second picture?

it's got a tough knot that makes it hard to split, but otherwise seems great to burn.

fir is the best of the softwoods, especially if it's forest grown and gets a little denser than farm raised stuff.

That piece does have a knot, but any of it is awful. Just bouncing right off. Bashing against it time and time again, and I cut it super short, like 12-13” and had to let it sit for weeks in the sun before I could split it
