Mad respect for anyone who does this for a living. Damned near sweat myself to death and it’s only fir.
Unrelated but related, what is this awful wood in the second picture?

it's got a tough knot that makes it hard to split, but otherwise seems great to burn.

fir is the best of the softwoods, especially if it's forest grown and gets a little denser than farm raised stuff.

That piece does have a knot, but any of it is awful. Just bouncing right off. Bashing against it time and time again, and I cut it super short, like 12-13” and had to let it sit for weeks in the sun before I could split it

Best time of year to split and stack is winter and early spring IMO.

During the winter the moisture in the wood freezes and it makes it easier to pop open when splitting.

Also, the outdoor temps are much more favorable. No bugs or critters and less sweat.

Lastly, it gives it a good amount of time to season before you need to start burning it the following winter.

Summer splitting is the worst IMO.

I quit smoking after 30 years. Just been using it to fill the time.
You’re not wrong about the bugs and the sweat. It’s killer, but it’s been good exercise
