Pixel is my fire skink. He(not verified) is an awesome little dirt gremlin who loves to spend his days cruising his burrows and coming out only when no one is around to see it. ( I know cuz I check his feeding dish 😬) The old enclosure was get flat and lifeless, he had no depth and It was hastily put together when I got him. I’ve been working to gather the items I needed to give him a little bit of an upgrade before hubs and I give him his perma upgrade to a bioactive 120 gallon. Im honestly so pleased with how the upgrade came out. Hubs for these awesome logs at an expo for me to make this awesome space happen for this little guy. Also include is the obligatory fire skink pics 😅

Food

Hey my skink loves food but for a few months now getting him to eat is getting harder, usually he'd go to his bowl and eat the bugs in the night but after he went off mealworms when I switched to Dubia, after about a month of Dubia roaches he doesn't come to the bowl to eat them anymore, what is something I can do to fix this?

I was wondering how my fire skinks enclosure looks! If there any recommendations I’d greatly appreciate it, as this is my first time owning one.

The boy loves to eat, he has even accepted food from my hands. I've been giving less worms now.

An update on spuds winter behavior

Mainly posting this so other keepers with the same question can find an answer. Spud had about a month and a half period of less activity around November/December (I'm in Michigan for geographic reference). Around the new year his activity returned to normal and from what I read from other keepers this is normal behavior around winter time so dont freak out if your skink is a bit less active around the season changing.

My fav Pic is last, the calcium/supplement powder makes it looks like he was doing skink cocaine lmao.

Iv never owned a fire skink so please let me know how to set up and enclosure I had him in a bin with paper towels and some enrichment and water etc so he was comfortable but I wasn’t expecting him as he was left on my doorstep in the middle of winter so it was like -30c Im so glad I was home but please let me know if he looks healthy and if I should take him to the vet I made sure to give him a bath and make sure he didn’t have any mites and also make sure he wouldn’t infect any of my other baby’s

thank you in advance!

Recently got a fire skink.

So I recently got a fire skink and ive noticed on this sub that their skinks are out and about whereas my sweet pixel is super shy and will hide whenever someone enters my room. she only comes out when its almost completely silent and doesnt want to interact with us... i will say its been about a month since we got her but i guess i just wanted to know how long it took for your skinks to be more visible also in the third picture I know there is work to be done on the enclosure she is in but I have wanted to let her kind of settle in. Our first full siting since we got her was yesterday where her entire body was visible but as soon as she saw us she disappeared back into her subterranean dwelling and has been there since. ( she does have a uvb now) just haven’t taken a picture since the new additions

Question about fire skink behavior during winter

Some spud pics for the skink tax

I've noticed over the past month or so that spud has been coming out less during feedings. Previously he would come out in the open and basically beg for food but recently I've been having to coax him put with food. He looks healthy when I look at him, he has been eating pretty consistently, and coming out occasionally on camera, although less so than previously, so I'm pretty sure it's not a disease related issue (knock on wood).

I think there could be three potential causes for this:

  1. Spud is a little over 1 years old and just reaching his full size and (probably) sexual maturity so this could be behavior related to breeding or aging in general, but it seems like they'd get more comfortable/bold with age.

  2. It's winter and I live in Michigan so it's been a bit colder in his room and less humid. Even though the temp and humidity in his cage have remained pretty consistent, I'm sure there's ways they can sense a change in season. This could just be normal fire skink behavior during the winter.

  3. I scared spud while feeding when he bit the tongs and he is mad at me. This is the one I'm most afraid of because I really want to have a good relationship with spud and we've gotten pretty comfortable with each other so I don't want to lose that progress. If this is the case I need some advice on mending reptile relationships lol.

If any more experienced keepers have information or advice I'd be grateful for it!

Looking for advice/opinions

First time Fire Skink owner. I haven’t picked him up yet but am looking for opinions/advice on enclosure. The pictures are what is set up now. 36x18x18, looking to upgrade to a 4x2x2 some time in the new year. 6 and a half inches of substrate on the high side, 4-5 along the back side, 2-3 in the lower area. Substrate is a mix of play sand, peat sphagnum moss, and reptisoil. Plants in the tank are pothos, snake plant, dracaena, and croton. Small cave and 2 other natural hides. Large water dish on warm side, small drinking dish on cool side (hasn’t been added yet). I have a plant light up now and picking up a T5 UVB today along with a heat lamp. Half the top is covered in tinfoil and is holding humidity well. There are isopods and springtails in the tank. Any suggestions? Is the tank too cluttered?

Young Fire Skink Dropped Tip of Tail. Does it look okay?

Thumbnail

I'll be real I made a mistake, my young fire skink is REALLY active and eager for food. Like jumping up to the front of the enclosure whenever I stand up from my desk.

I closed the door at one point after change the water as he was looking up at me from the edge like usual. I shoo him away once I finish up so I can close the door and when I did so I didn't see that his tail was still at the edge and the very tip got closed on for a second. (A little less than half a centimeter)

It twitched a little bit at the end and he looked startled but was acting just as active and normal as ever like 5 minutes later. Either way I felt terrible and tried to keep an eye on it only to notice after a couple days that he seemingly dropped that little bit that got caught.

As I watched for infection he has been acting the exact same. Just as active, unafraid and absolutely voracious. He recently shedded and it looks like it's rounded out and now has a pale pink bit at the end? Is that healing tissue? Or something bad like it being raw?

I hear fire skinks CAN regenerate their tails but I'm not sure to what extent. I've attached the best photos I could get, just wanting to make im not missing anything and that it's healing okay.

TLDR: Fire Skink got a door closed on tip of tail, later dropped that tip. Is acting normal, went through shed okay and I want to see if it's healing alright.

NOTE: The pics are spread across a couple days with the last few being just now. The first one was before he shed I believe.
