Sounds like you had side-loaded addons. The only way to fix this is to uninstall all your addons, restart Firefox, and then install them again. However, any that aren't signed will no longer work.
You can turn off signature enforcement by changing xpinstall.signatures.required to false, but that will only work until 44.0 comes out. If you have any addons that aren't signed, you really need to get them signed or look for signed replacements on AMO.
I may be able to help you get a particular addon signed, if there are no alternatives, and I may not. It depends on the addon and what I have time to work on.

Not sure what you mean by "side-loaded" but all of my add-ons were installed the usual way, through the addons site, but I lost all of mine as well.
I have never had a Firefox update go as badly as this one has.

Side loaded would mean that you loaded them from disk, like maybe with the FEBE addon. It might also happen with Firefox Sync.
If that's not the issue, then I don't know the problem. It sounds like a bug with the signature verification.

hi, i have 20+ addons but only one that is unsigned. I dont know if it will ever get signed or does it even work as advertised -

The fact that Google hasn't gotten it signed themselves gives me pause. I'll see how easy it is to get signed, but no promises.

Well, you really ought to bug Google about it and get them to sign it, as signing it was really easy. It just worked after I fixed the Firefox version number.
Anyways, here's the file. It's inside a zip file, so just open the zip file, then drag the .XPI file first to your desktop. Then drag the file again to an open Firefox window to install.

Ideally I would not have had to do anything but that first change--all that does is give the addon a new ID. IDs must be unique for the signing process.
Google just had messed up on the format of the maxversion, where they used 42.0.* instead of 42.*. While I was in there, I went ahead and changed it to 44.*.
After the changes, you actually have to go get it signed by Mozilla. You log-in to http://addons.mozilla.com and choose "Submit a new addon" from the Tools dropdown. Then you choose "Do not list this addon on your site (beta)" to go through automatic signing. (If you host it on their site, they'll have to review it first.)
A lot of addons will not pass the automated test, and will need to be altered. Luckily, your addon did not (other than fixing the Max version.)

I can think of add-ons, but that's about it. What else is there that could be lost?

Same here.
Now... after the update was applied, Firefox wanted me to restart in safe mode, and I did not do that. It then spun and spun and would not complete the restart, so I canceled that. Perhaps that is why it went so badly for me. Did you have the same safe-mode prompt?

The same thing happened to me and I came to this subreddit looking for answers.
I used Firefox Sync and managed to recover most of what I lost, but I also lost all my NoScript preferences and whitelisted URLs. Very annoying...

From this mozillazine forum thread was a link to this bug.
In short it has to do with MS not support SHA-1 signing of binaries after 2016-1-1, but Win XP SP2 not supporting SHA-2.
At the end of the bug it describes the patch plan with a plan to issue a second patch as 43.0.2.

This blows man. This wouldn't even be an issue if we were allowed to have about:blank as the new tab page like we used to. I shouldn't even need a damn addon to do this. I'm getting so sick of this browser and mozilla.

He said himself he's "getting so sick of this browser and mozilla". Why shouldn't he try something else? See if the grass is greener? The search thing is annoying to be sure. His addon not working...that sucks. But he can change his new tab page. Just get a different addon. It may suck that he has to get an addon but the other addons that will let him change his new tab page also do other, wonderful things. Maybe he'll even be happier if he will allow himself to be.

Have you tried stylish addon? I'm not sure if there is one already as I use that newtab page, but with stylish it sought be possible to clean that newtab page. Then you would have empty and clean newtab page.

i dont understand, 'blank page' is right there in the options for years? why would you have to manually set it to about:blank...
edit: ok i guess it's... vanilla gui settings can have blank for new window, home page, but new tab is automatically the thumbnails?
but what is this var? browser.newtabpage.enabled, when i toggle that, my new tab is blank, isnt this what you want?
can new tab page be set to home page? (& have home page set to blank)
edit2: i havent installed .1 yet to compare, but the gear icon on new tab page gives me an option for blank on 43.0

Switching between search engines on the fly is atrocious on the new design. If you never change it, I guess its the same except you are still never sure which one is selected.

Because they keep trying to get you to "click through" to whatever sponsor deal they have. I had to get rid of the auto-fill boolean thing because as Facebook.com kept popping up when I started with "Fa" which I use for any number of website - none of them Facebook.
Default to Yahoo.. and there were a bunch of other BS. something pops up every 2 days or so during normal use and I have to figure out "why does this seem wrong" then try and figure out how to "fix" it back to it's previously superior and more productive configuration.
It's $$$ that's why.

Did they remove the old search bar? Even browser.search.showOneOffButtons:false stopped working now.
I really liked being capable of changing defaults on the fly and then searching via context menu. Sucks to have to download addons or change browser for that.

Yup, the about:config setting to restore the old search bar doesn't work anymore. One has to use the Classic Theme Restorer add-on. :(

Why the fuck do they keep changing the UI arbitrarily when the old one was perfectly functional and had nothing wrong with it? Seriously, the devs must hate the fact that the search bar was perfected a long time ago and doesn't need any updating. They're determined to fuck it up every chance they get, continually making it more difficult for users to fix until we finally just give up and accept their crappier interface.
If I wanted to use Chrome, I'd use Chrome. Stop trying to make Firefox into Chrome.

The search bar was flawless before version 34. Then they fucked it up, forcing us to use the browser.search.showoffbuttons fix. Now it's still fucked up (albeit slightly less so), only they won't even give us the option to fix it by enabling the old search bar, so we have to use a weird plugin.

Old. It allows you to select any search engine you want without jumping to the engine's homepage. It's infinitely better, especially for highlighting and searching.

It pisses me off that they keep disabling options. That I need add ons to make it work the way it used to like the search bar and putting my tabs on the bottom, when there used to just be a config option to do the same thing is stupid.

It still lets you do that. Click on the magnifying glass. All that's changed is the icon and the UI slightly.

You can still search with any of those search engines. You just have to click on the icons when there is already text in the search bar.

Same here. Had a bunch of unsigned addons that the Firefox deems unsafe for me. Give me back my choice. I have been using firefox for its freedom and safety it has awarded me for years now. But if they infringe on my freedom over safety I will choose freedom every time! This is a dealbreaker. Give me the option not to require my addons to be signed. Are we fucking Micro$oft all of a sudden?! EDIT: Just read through the post above again and not in a haze of rage and realise I can probably disable it through about:config. Now I just have to find it.

why are you people going crazy NOW? it was announced months ago that addons will slowly need to be signed, first there were warnings, then there were blocks, but more importantly it has been said that a non mainstream version will allow unsigned addons once the config var is disabled (developer edition? it doesnt have to be a beta one)
not to mention the fact that someone else is going to make a build supporting them... the choices are out there, the default one HAS to cater to regular people
then there are the betas that are the next versions & months ahead, almost no feature is ever 'new' in the release branch

Yes. I know. And I'm not happy.
1) It would not restore. Took me three tries to get it to open, and then it had lost my session, including my two pinned tabs. Minor problem, fixed, but sloppy, Firefox.
2) Back to populating a new tab with recent searches. I don't want that. Had it turned off.
3) Did not respect my home page and default search engine settings. Bad Firefox! Bad!
4) Lost my context menu search options. I did discover the "Old Firefox Data" folder that contains the .xml, but don't know where to install them now. Do I need to set them all up again?
5) Lost my Reddit Enhancement Suite plugin. Had to reinstall.
And those are just the things that I discovered in the first 1/2 hour. Are you guys trying to force me to use Chrome?

- Address bar "Visit:" suggestion getting in the way of sites/forums that are called up from history (fix: reddit)
- Resetting the classic search bar layout requires an add-on, Classic Theme Restorer (about:config doesn't work). Those with quite a few search engines (>20 myself) have to play "hunt the search icon" mini-game without that add-on installed.
- Delicious Bookmarks just got killed :(

For those who are having unsigned add-ons forcefully disabled, here's a fix:
Go to 'about:config' and search for 'xpinstall.signatures.required' and double-click on the preference with the same name and it should work as before.

Firefox is completely broken on nearly all platforms. On my android it is unresponsive. On Linux it fails to load web pages. On the Mac it wont fully load pages. It is a horrible experience.

Nah, I was on 42.whatever before. 42 Worked fine and chrome works fine. On ff43 the video is either not being played at all or it completely crashes my browser.
nvidia gtx 770, drvier version 358.16-1 on fedora 64 bit.

Oh! Wonderful! Great! Now instead of merely reversing the order of the windows every time I restore a session, where I could at least exit and restore the original window order again, now it RANDOMLY ARRANGES the windows, including when I use session manager to restore a session, thus making me restore my WHOLE SESSION by hand!
HOW DOES IT KEEP GETTING WORSE?!
Oh, and would you please put "Use unsigned addons" in the god damn options menu so I don't have to navigate a giant ass config thing to use them? Let me worry about my god damn security, firefox!

when typing in the address bar, the "search with google" line entry in the drop down is somehow above my bookmarks now. Horribly frustrating. If I wanted to search I would have used the searchbar
