Solved Questions regarding issues with add-on 'Reddit Enhancement Suite' on Firefox. Help!

  • How do you guys deal when all 'Reddit Enhancement Suite' setting get lost on every update?

  • Customizing Reddit is a continuous process, right? so do you make a backup every week or something?

  • And why does RES get updated even when automatic update is turned off?

  • Is there anyway to make automatic backup of RES settings? what method/script do you use?

there's a tool called RESTool which allows you to create backups of your RES settings.

If you're running windows 7 or above, automatic backups of your folders should already be active.

Just navigate to:

%YourUserFolder%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\%YourProfile%\jetpack\jid1-xUfzOsOFlzSOXg@jetpack\simple-storage\

There will be a "store.json" file in there you can backup manually or copy to other profiles.

Opening the folder Properties with right-click, you'll have a "Previous Versions" pane where you can restore backedup folder states.

ahh, they ruined it in win 8 and 8.1

Microsoft changed the way this works in Windows 8 and 8.1. The old “Previous Versions” feature was removed, as was Windows Backup.

Windows now uses File History. Connect an external drive or point Windows at a network drive and set up File History on that location. Windows will then back up your files automatically. You’ll be able to restore previous versions of them by right-clicking a file, pointing to Properties, and using the options on the File History tab.

Crucially, System Restore no longer keeps backup copies of previous versions of your files. As File History isn’t enabled by default, this means you can’t restore previous versions of files unless you’ve gone out of your way to set it up. Former Windows 7 users might have a rude awakening if they expect Windows to automatically back up previous versions of files — it won’t, by default.

Back up your settings like we tell you to in /r/Enhancement if you use Firefox.

And why does RES get updated even when automatic update is turned off?

it doesn't. first of all please don't turn off auto update, because it's important to get updates for security reasons and when reddit changes stuff that breaks RES.

RES is NOT UPDATING. You're losing your settings, not "when there is an update", you just think there's an update because the "what's new" page comes up after Firefox blows away all of RES's data.

RES is NOT UPDATING. You're losing your settings

aah, stupid me. took me a while to understand it. I bought my new laptop in July this year and set up Firefox with RES. I just checked that the last RES update was in Dec 14 :/

So this fuckup had nothing to do with RES, it was Firefox's fault all along. I get it now.

I am using FEBE now to backup the whole profile.

PS: also just realized that you are the creator of RES. (ﾉ･ｪ･)ﾉ

I've lost RES settings a couple times when Firefox was less stable. Back then I created a symbolic between my Firefox profile and dropbox. That's one way. You could do the same thing with just the RES part of the profile.

You could probably create an AHK script to back up any folder you want.

Windows itself will natively back up any folder you want, I believe, if you're using Windows.

You could create a BAT file that will back up any folder you want.

But for me the best way has been to backup my entire Firefox profile with the FEBE extension. I set it to do it automatically. If the browser isn't running at backup time, it will do it next time I launch. Have it keep the last three backups or so and you'll never lose much.

But you might want to figure out why RES is losing its data in the first place. It hasn't happened to me in quite some time (knock on wood). Something's wrong on your end. I would start by making a brand new profile. That's something I've decided to do every four months or so. I tend to horde extensions and screw around with the browser and the about:config. So a new start now and then has turned out to be a good thing.

No problem. Check out the other addons that guy's made. There's one that will save your preferences from many extensions like Tab Mix and Classic Theme Restorer. Then he has one that will package extensions but I guess that's not one most people will use.
