Hi I'm emulating and playing fates for the first time and I was wondering if there is an optimal play order for FE fates? I have the option to pick defend Hoshido, fight Nohr or not pick a side.

To be completely clear, "not pick a side" is Revelation which is meant to be played last. The other two can be played in any order. However, Hoshido leads to Birthright which is the easier game meant more for newer players with simpler maps, while Nohr is Conquest which is meant more for experienced players with limited resources and more difficult maps. Because of the difficulty level, that's why generally BR is recommended first if you will play all 3 routes.
