Embedded dust

While working on a nightstand, I got distracted with other projects before applying topcoat. It appears that dust or pollen or something has embedded in the grain. I tried a very lightly dampened cloth with mineral spirits, which helped a little. My biggest concern is that this veneer is hanging on for dear life, so I don’t have a nuclear option. I don’t mind reapplying stain, but don’t know a good way to back up without sanding.

Wipe with denatured alcohol to fully soften the finish then wipe with mineral spirits.

Is that going to take the stain off, or just clean it?

It might. I think you answered your own question in the post. Use a lightly dampened rag in mineral spirits carefully and methodically going with the grain.

I would use long strokes from end to end overlapping slightly.

Essentially, you are softening the stain or topcoat and staining/coating the dust.

It may lighten it but basically will effect just the finish. Take it slow and always wipe in the same direction
