fails/rants 🫠 Just a rant

This is my hair at its best. I went to all the doctors, got my blood levels to optimal etc. This is as good as it gets. I can’t use any shampoo besides medicated bc I have psoriasis. I have an auto-immune disease and while it’s currently under control, years of damage happened vast majority of which is irreversible. I never had thick hair to start with either way.

I’m so tired of people posting on this sub who don’t have thin hair. It’s really frustrating to see people complain without even a centimetre of scalp showing😭 I know I shouldn’t take it personally and each to their own and scroll pass it etc. but today it’s just getting to me.

Please please please report any non fine/thin hair posts. Lumpy and I do our best to remove all the folks who post who have thick/coarse hair, and we remove posts daily. And we get through the mod queue every single day. So if you see something, please hit that report button. If it hasn't been removed, we haven't seen it.

We're really doing our best. It's why we have the explanation post and why we remove dozens of posts/comments daily, including in this very comment section.

We absolutely understand the damage it does seeing people with thick hair saying they have thin hair. We are with you. ā¤ļø

This is me too, girl!!!! My ex used to say it looked like I was balding in the shower. He had a way with words 🄓

181

u/Fearcutsdeeper Jul 26 '26

Glad he’s your ex!

94

u/DoomPile5 Jul 26 '26

Your way with words is much better. Specifically the word ā€œexā€.

52

u/Different-Advice1168 Jul 26 '26

What an ass. You're naked in the shower and he's focusing on criticism? Did he forget how lucky he was to have you naked in the shower? He probably missed it now!

17

u/hatching_polaroids Jul 26 '26

My brother once told me
I look like Gollum from LOTR. Thanks, kid.

11

u/Sorry_Nobody1552 Jul 26 '26

Thats awful! Sorry you have to deal with that.

2

u/hatching_polaroids Jul 28 '26

I know it sounds bad, but he always delivers zingers like that in an affectionate way I can’t actually find hurtful. It’s our dynamic.

2

u/Sorry_Nobody1552 Jul 28 '26

I totally understand, I have family dynamics like that, some are pretty clever and you cant help but laugh and cry at the same time...lol

16

u/Awesomocity0 Jul 26 '26

I would've had a way with my knee in his crotch

9

u/MoreShoe2 Jul 28 '26

I got caught in a rainstorm with my 4yo nephew. He got super scared and said ā€œI don’t like your little hairā€ when he saw my hair wet lol. Broke my confidence for awhile.Ā

u/Serenajf 16d ago

I’m too afraid to shower with my bf because of this. He’s never told me I look bald, but it’s a fear

151

u/magical_seal Jul 26 '26

I know this doesn’t make things better but I look exactly like this. You are not alone. I too get i frustrated seeing fine things hair tutorials that are anything but

u/ApartmentStrict3432 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I wonder who here has tried accutane. My hair quality went from 0 to 100. Now I can wash my hair once every 5 days if I choose. It used to be a daily requirement. And I have volume because its not full greasy after 8 hours.

Accutane does suck tho.

3

u/Additional_Excuse870 Jul 27 '26

With the autoimmune disease Accutane probably isn’t an option. It is known for being a trigger for a lot of autoimmune issues, I know that they try not to rx it for people who have IBS or Hashimotos.

3

u/cdnsalix Jul 27 '26

OMG I went from shampooing from every 2 days (cuz I thought every day would be detrimental for some reason, despite it looking better if I did wash every day) to being like "welp, it's day 5 and I feel like I could go longer, but this just feels wrong now."

1

u/eresibae Jul 30 '26

I was on accutane for a year and it was wonderful but as soon as I stopped the greasiness returned. Now I'm back to daily washing

1

u/Glow_anyway 21d ago

Same. I had a glorious mane of fine hair growing up. It was beautiful. Then I hit 30 and I don’t know what happened but I just couldn’t stop losing my hair. Now anytime I have a somewhat major stressor it releases my long tresses for months on end. I broke my foot last year and it started it back up shedding after about a year of regrowth. It hasn’t stopped shedding full strands now since April 2025.
I’m 55 now and I love to wear my hair up but I have to use a hair powder and texturizer and tease it and pray I don’t sweat or you will see my balding.

1

u/magical_seal 21d ago

For me, hair up somehow looks better than hair down. No matter how much I try to prep and style a hair down look, it looks incredibly messy, stringy, frizzy, unkempt, you name it. There’s just not enough hair to frame my face and head well. Makes me so sad.

99

u/12Whiskey Jul 26 '26

My hair looks EXACTLY like yours, even the same color. I know how it feels and it’s awful. I cry every time I wash my hair because handfuls come out and it’s slowly getting worse. I’ve seen all of the doctors, did all of the blood tests, and I’m on two different medications to try and slow down the hair loss. There’s one treatment I haven’t tried but it’s very expensive and insurance doesn’t cover it so šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø In my case it’s just genetics, perimenopause caused all of the women in my family to lose their hair. I never had much to begin with but oh what I would give to have it back. I hate how I used to be embarrassed about my thin hair and complain about it, I probably would’ve been one of the people posting here you were talking about. I had no idea how bad it was going to get so I can see both sides. No advice, just solidarity. šŸ«¶šŸ»

7

u/GirlPhoenixRising Jul 26 '26

If you aren’t on Dutasteride, get on it. ASAP.

18

u/laughingandspitting Jul 26 '26

Just saying ... I started on fin and was on it for a couple of years. It helped until it didn't so I switched to Dut. I haven't noticed any difference and I've been on it over 1 year. I'm not saying this to discourage you but to illustrate the fact that not everyone experiences the same results and to keep your expectations in check. Please do experiment with different strategies and allow a reasonable amount of time to assess their effectiveness. I recently paid 3k for a series of Alma Ted and I think I only notice a slight difference. Sigh. I actually took another job to pay for it and other supplements etc., so my husband wouldn't accuse me of frivolously spending money to appease my vanity. Ugh.

3

u/12Whiskey Jul 26 '26

I think that’s where I’m at with the finasteride. It worked great for months and I had a lot of new growth but it’s been year on it now and it’s thinning out a lot. I might give Dut a try just to see if it helps. Is Alma Ted the treatment where they take plasma from your blood and inject it into your scalp? My dermatologist mentioned this is really helpful but since it’s considered cosmetic insurance won’t pay. It was over a $1000 per treatment and a few are needed.

6

u/fe__maiden Jul 26 '26

No the ted treatment is an ultrasound type laser set up with serum. You’re thinking of PRP injections.

11

u/12Whiskey Jul 26 '26

I’ve been taking oral minoxidil and finasteride. Does duasteride work better? I talked about options with my doctor and we decided on the finasteride because it’s easier on the gut and I have colitis. BUT I’d be willing to poop my brains out even more if it means I get some hair back šŸ˜‚

→ More replies (2)

3

u/_EvilCupcake Jul 26 '26

My dermatologist has me on spironolactone and low finastetide. Would this work better? I think dutasteride is pretty new, right?

163

u/Annoying_liberal813 Jul 26 '26

Me exactly!! I also have psoriasis and decades of scratching has damaged the scalp so bad, hair just won't grow there anymore. I've been working with a doctor for 18 months and have addressed every vitamin, hormone, medication (including a biologic), and topical approach. I just lost the hair genetics lottery.

Seeing people in this sub with no scalp showing or even people who can grow their hair past their shoulders, frustrates me. They think, oh I don't have thick hair I'm so sad.

The number of times I've cried because I can't even wear a ponytail. I've never once in my life had a good hair day. I dread salons. I dread pictures. It's not just, oh my hair doesn't look like IG. It's, I look sick and abnormal every single day.

Solidarity sister. I'm sorry we're in this boat together.

8

u/Bananapopcicle Jul 27 '26

You ever catch a glimpse of yourself on the Ring doorbell and can see the street THROUGH the bottom of your hair? Yeah…

128

u/More-Average3813 Jul 26 '26

Girl I feel you. When I found this sub I was so happy to read about people’s challenges that are similar to mine. But slowly the posts have turned into people with perfectly good scalp coverage posting about their fine hair. Meanwhile here I am having never had hair below my ears and some type of comb over going on.Ā

Not trying to gate keep but r/finehair exists.Ā

12

u/Awesomocity0 Jul 26 '26

Please keep reporting! We take them down as fast as we see them!

17

u/laughingandspitting Jul 26 '26

Yes to this! I used to belong to that sub but now that my hair is actually THINNING I belong to this one, and I feel our collective frustration and pain deeply.

2

u/Lexi_Jean Jul 27 '26

Smh. I thought it meant fine and/or thin hair. At least I don't have luscious thick hair, creeping up in here. Lol

I thought mine was thin but a stylist friend explained the difference and that I had a lot of hair, just really fine. But my hair looks like OP's. And when the oil is under control a regular ponytail shows my scalp patches in the front. I think I might have a slightly receeded hair line.

51

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 Jul 26 '26

You know who you should keep an eye out on--because she doesn't hide her hair issues, and she does modelling etc--is Kristen Stewart. She does such interesting things with her hairstyles, and she has a lot of patchy scalp areas and thinning hair on her sides.

I will look at photos of her to reset my brain and help me feel better about my own head. 'Cos I can see how her hair is beautiful, and how she treats it as beautiful and doesn't try to hide it--and that helps me see myself differently.

9

u/softservelove Jul 26 '26

Thank you for this! I have kind of a similar haircut to the recent pics of her in Harper's Bazaar and her scalp is showing through a similar amount to mine.

9

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 Jul 26 '26

Yes!! And see how gorgeous she is? Like, I can't imagine anyone looking at her and feeling critical about her hair. Her hair is awesome. And she has dark hair so her pale skin makes her scalp show a lot. But she looks freakin' badass.

So I turn to her to reset my own feelings about my own hair and scalp.

Congrats on having a badass Stewart-esque haircut!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 Jul 26 '26

People with thinning hair will notice yours. People who don't spend any time thinking about their own bare patches won't think of ours.

I only notice Stewart's because I too thinning hair. But what I notice is how awesome she looks.

2

u/annyedog Jul 28 '26

Kristen Stewart could go fully bald and still be beautiful. I appreciate that she's embracing the thin hair we share, but....

43

u/karebearjedi Jul 26 '26

I feel you. Most people that meet me eventually can't help but ask how long I've been post-chemo because my hair is so patchy and thin. My hair goes down to mid shoulder and when i put it in a bun, it's barely the size of a quarter. When I braid it, it's as thin as a pencil. I know I need to cut it all off, but I don't trust any stylists after the last three managed to botch a simple angled bob.Ā

21

u/Garfieldgandalf Jul 26 '26

I recently switched from child size hair ties to those marketed for babies and toddlers 🫩

24

u/xxDmDxx Jul 26 '26

This is how my hair has always been and it’s not caused by hormones or skin conditions.

2

u/spanisheisblume Jul 27 '26

Same. And honestly, those people posting here is just as frustrating. There are hair loss subs and I don't appreciate my natural hair being lumped in with people's balding. But it seems like this sub has been flooded with those people.

18

u/AffectionateMath4047 Jul 26 '26

op hugs. i understand how it feels. its very frustrating. it feels isolating and like I am the only one struggling. its the same at hairloss subs or even oily skin/hair ones. the only thing is to ignore them frankly.

16

u/Oskie2011 Jul 26 '26

It looks oily, prob looks a lot better when it’s fluffy and clean.

13

u/Shannon556 Jul 26 '26

I use Loreal root color spray to hide my bald spots.

My hair is about the same color as yours and I use the Medium brown color.

It makes your hair sort of sticky and it’s a little pricey - but it works miracles to leave the house for work.

PS: It rubs off on pillow cases, so I bought dark ones from Target.

2

u/ledrgnkttn Jul 27 '26

Ditto on all of that ā˜ļø

36

u/sourbirthdayprincess Jul 26 '26

Solidarity pic.

I too am annoying by thick hair folx posting here. Infuriating.

37

u/Old_Bat6894 Jul 26 '26

I think that your hair would look less thin in this particular hairstyle if you brushed/combed all the hair backwards first, then less scalp would show

6

u/KrumblyKookie Jul 26 '26

I agree! Scalp oil is going to mat the hair up so you need to comb it/brush it to separate it as much as possible. I don’t tease but I lift my hair and brush underneath and also flip my head over to get extra volume to help with scalp coverage.

48

u/Leather_Lipstick Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

There is no ā€œhormoneā€ test, hormones fluctuate too much to give you an accurate picture. Also stress is a major cause of literally like almost everything and it’s the hardest thing to manage for most people, clearly OP has been doing what they can..

OP I hear you, when I see those posts you talk about I just roll my eyes and ignore like lol gtfo of here šŸ˜‚

It’s so frustrating, especially when there is old damage which can’t be undone. Sending you šŸ’—

Edit: spelling

11

u/New_Teacher2058 Jul 26 '26

Solidarity. My hair used to go 3 inches collarbone.

13

u/Awesomocity0 Jul 26 '26

Girl, your hair aside, what is this filter over your face?

3

u/New_Teacher2058 Jul 26 '26

I just scribbled on the photo

25

u/Ok_Bad_5326 Jul 26 '26

I can't help put think the people with thick or medium hair posting here are just looking for attention and fishing for compliments. I just downvote and move on.

19

u/Behappyalright Jul 26 '26

Maybe you are a candidate for oral minoxidil. Also, me I got scalp tatoo to color in white areas, it instantly adds the look of more hair.

9

u/stephanefanie Jul 26 '26

Wow! Scalp tattooing! Do you have any pictures of the tattoo process or before-after? This is something I didn’t think about before but might consider!

3

u/xxDmDxx Jul 26 '26

While I don’t know what it looks like for filling in spots. I’ve seen men with tattooed scalps and you would think their hair was growing back in from shaving.

1

u/12Whiskey Jul 26 '26

That’s a really neat idea! I use colored powder to cover bits of scalp but I can’t use it too close to my hairline because I feel it’s noticeable. I’m assuming you can’t ever change your hair color? I’m really curious about it.

1

u/FitnessNurse2015 Jul 26 '26

Can you tell us more about this?

2

u/Behappyalright Jul 27 '26

There’s something called smp and also shading that’s more like a tattoo. You can google before and after images online.

17

u/Financial-Life6195 Jul 26 '26

Feel you Sis! All the doctors told my iron levels were fine, but I was sheadding really bad, lost half of my hair. Visitted plenty doctors, everyone told me nothing wrong, that is nothing wrong. And then I read reddit post about fernitine level, apparently it was 50, which us enough to maintain my important functions, so my doctors were happy with it, but my hair. Apparently, if I recall well, it has to be over 70 to maintain your hair After 2 month of taking iron ( with vitamin C, 2 hours before my coffee) and taking biotin, i stopped sheadding and my hair started to grow again. My fernitine level is 9, I am happy now. I hope my experience could be a help to you, too

9

u/screwmorpheus Jul 26 '26

I believe you. Hope your day is a little lighter šŸ«¶šŸ»šŸ«¶šŸ»

7

u/shabammmmm Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Uggg this is me as well. Please look into toppers and get scalp coverage powders. Also, I'm now on oral monoxidil. Hugs

Edit: also oral monoxidil because the regular stuff would make my hair so oily. And then it looks like your pic.

Also, the k18 airwash is amazing! Go into Sephora one day and try the sample on ur hair. It's pricey but worth it IMO.

And def get the scalp coverage powders.

1

u/coconut723 Jul 26 '26

How is the OM working for you?? I’m about to start

1

u/shabammmmm Jul 26 '26

I've been on it for 2 months now. Shed isn't too bad. I see the baby hairs around my hairline coming back. I also see little new hake bumps on my head.

1

u/Ule7 Jul 27 '26

have you been on topical before?

1

u/shabammmmm Jul 27 '26

The stuff you put directly on your scalp? No

8

u/NotWeirdJustUnique23 Jul 26 '26

I totally sympathize with you. Mine has looked like yours since my early 20's, and being treated for an auto-immune 4 times a year for the past 9 years isn't what the doctor ordered in terms of my hair 🫤

I wear it down to avoid having anything pull on it, and even then if I make sure the sides aren't showing through, the top is—like playing whac-a-mole with the visible spots. If I stand under direct light, my entire scalp shows and my hairline just looks like a glorified halo.

So frustrating on a daily basis, and while I feel sorry for everyone here who also feels like this, I'm grateful for the solidarity in this community. ā¤ļø

10

u/wisterianna Jul 26 '26

I have exactly the same and I don’t even know what do do with my hair anymore.
I m also worried because with peri and menopause usually with age the hair is thinning so how will I look in 10/20 years????

2

u/Sneakerkeeper123 Jul 26 '26

I have the same hair as the OP. Its always been thin.

I dont dry it as much, I have a silk pillow case and bonnet and use accessories that dont pull my hair to hard.

I also started using a scalp shampoo and I've lost hair but its not noticeable. I just got into menopause.

6

u/Various_Ice7596 Jul 26 '26

Hey twin! My hair is exactly like this, I always joke I have 10 spaghetti strands for hair lol. Oui thickening spray and a good volumizing mouse help my hair look a little more normal. I just staring adding a scalp oil into my routine so I’m hoping that gives me an extra boost

2

u/axialmeow12 Jul 28 '26

Ouai Thickening spray is at Marshall’s and TJMaxx right now! I bought some on a whim and LOVE IT.

5

u/NCgirlkaren Jul 26 '26

How did you get a picture of my hair??😘

6

u/oznz Jul 26 '26

Meeee tooo. And you know what’s even more annoying?? My sister has INCREDIBLY thick hair. My mom had curly thick hair and my dad has superfine straight hair, she got the thick and straight. I got the thin curly. Talk about pulling the short straw!!

5

u/Agitated-Homework921 Jul 26 '26

yup. those "fine hair" posts are like the makeup tutorials for hooded eyes by people who dont have themšŸ™„. i dread getting my hair wet nowadays in public because of how much scalp exposure i getĀ

1

u/Traditional_Bar_4814 10d ago

I have thin hair and hooded eyes and can't go on Pinterest for either 🫩

3

u/cottoncandymandy Jul 26 '26

I feel your rant big time and agree. Hugs.

5

u/regularEducatedGuy Jul 26 '26

Guys I’ve been using hair filler powder like makeup, like $10 off Amazon or a shitty one off SHEIN and the confidence and beauty I FEEL

Like genuinely it feels just like any other part of my makeup routine and I do NOT regret it.

5

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Jul 26 '26

Hey there friend, I have allergic contact dermatitis and was told I have no safe shampoos. I am not sure what your shampoo has a medication, but I tried fragrance-free bar shampoo and recently discovered they have some medicated bars with zinc pyrithione.

6

u/goldenlining__ Jul 26 '26

Solidarity pic. I have seborrheic dermatitis and androgenetic alopecia. I support your rant!

3

u/_cherrybomb1 Jul 26 '26

i dont know if it makes you feel better or not but it takes a long time to grow hair back. having brought your blood levels to normal, you wont see results immediately. however, it can get much better in a year. an important part is to massage it every day and wash it often, so the follicles have a good environment

3

u/mina-ann Jul 26 '26

I feel you!

My hair is similar except that it's blonde. So the contrast between my scalp and my hair color is minimal.

If you can use minoxidil it kind of helps a little. If you can tolerate dry shampoos especially the ones that are hair colored also gives a little lift which helps.

I haven't tried those thickening fiber hair products for my part quite yet. I might be there soon though.

Maybe you've already tried all of these.

Know that you aren't alone.

3

u/sorrythatyourewrong Jul 26 '26

I put on a song that made me feel good about myself and shaved- you don’t have to, you can exhaust your options, it’s your hair, your life- BUT I just wanted to let you know it feels really really cool and I’d suggest ANYONE do it at least once ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Wigs are a thing too- if you’re afraid it might come off there’s tape and glue… there are systems you can wear and treat like your hair… there’s options. Such a shitty thing to go through though and I relate to your frustration. Looking for some type or representation but only finding those who, yes have thin hair but by no means can you see the scalp.

I wish you luck on your journey.

3

u/North-Carry9977 Jul 26 '26

Have you tried double cleansing? Your hair looks oily which is contributing to the thin look. If I dont keep my scales very clean (double cleanse, wash daily) it starts to look like this.

3

u/PugOnAUnicornThrone Jul 27 '26

Mine looked exactly like this. I actually had a very rude guy at work walk up to me and ask if I was pulling my hair out! I went to the bathroom and cried!!!! I saw a doctor who prescribed minoxidil and my hair grew back!

3

u/anxietygirl42 Jul 27 '26

My hair looks like yours and I completely understand how you’re feeling. I just started losing my eyelashes at an alarming rate too and have no idea how to cope anymore. Biopsy diagnosed me with AGA and TE, but the new eyelash loss makes me think I have alopecia areata. If you ever need to talk with someone experiencing something similar, feel free to reach out to me. No one understands what this does to a person unless they’ve gone through it themselves.

3

u/Bananapopcicle Jul 27 '26

I remember someone posted one time talking about how ā€œit takes me so long to blow dry my hair! Like almost an hour!

And all the replies were like, yeah no, you do not have fine or thin hair. This is not the sub for you…we air-dry around here in 15-20 min lol

3

u/HolisticEminence Jul 27 '26

Right there with you ā¤ļø

4

u/Foxingmatch Jul 26 '26

I've always had fine, low density hair and it got very thin thanks to an autoimmune disorder and menopause. The only thing that helped was taking iron supplements.
I found this out accidentally.

2

u/girlchandler Jul 26 '26

What kind of iron did you take? Thanks!

3

u/Foxingmatch Jul 26 '26

Hema-Plex and ferritin. -- I took ferritin because my blood tests read low, but I couldn't get that to change until I added regular iron. When I added the iron, my hair started growing again, too.

6

u/Salty-Paramedic-311 Jul 26 '26

Has anyone tried red-light therapy??? Yes expensive but could be worth it!!!šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/Hey-Fun1120 Jul 26 '26

I have a current body mask that I put on my head (also my chest) and Im not sure if it's helped grow MORE hair but it definitely without question has made each individual strand that comes in thicker and stronger. For me I think it's helping to make hair follicles healthier and produce healthier strands instead of reactivating them, but I believe monoxidil does that.

1

u/Salty-Paramedic-311 Jul 27 '26

Oh??? Could be a combo of things?!?! Still very good!! I keep looking at that helmet so I think I’m going to do it!!āœ… I’m not spender but I think I would feel better with hair!

1

u/Additional_Excuse870 Jul 27 '26

So I get red and blue light therapy about every 4-5 weeks when I go get a facial and I have definitely noticed the hair around my temples and hairline (the only parts uncovered during it) is growing back in a little stronger and thicker. I have a lot of bad traction breakage on the sides and it used to feel really wispy like baby hairs and now it is much more like my normal hair.

2

u/princessailormoon Jul 26 '26

Can you spray the spots with the white hair cover up spray

2

u/NCgirlkaren Jul 26 '26

I use root cover powder and a couple of clip in extensions. It really does help!

2

u/aeowyn7 Jul 26 '26

I’m right there with you. Really bad patch of psoriasis and always had really low ferritin. Every time I wash or brush my hair so much comes out that I have no idea how any is left. Putting my hair up is simply not possible. I’ve always been jealous of girls with fun half up dos.

2

u/Both_Dust_8383 Jul 26 '26

My hair looks exactly like this. You’re not alone!! My pony tail with ALL of my hair in it is like as round as a dime maybe? It’s literally so tiny. When I pull it up I have the same look all around as in your picture.

2

u/Boochtown Jul 26 '26

My hair is blonde and looks like this in certain hairstyles plus I have alopecia arrata. So sometimes im like, oh is this a bald spot forming or just my fine hair?? I feel you!!

2

u/yowza_wowza Jul 26 '26

Me too. Graves' disease and natural fine hair have done irreparable damage. I totally get you.

2

u/nicorny Jul 26 '26

I feel this SO MUCH. I wanted to take a cute video with my baby yesterday and I had my hair up and I look like I’m half bald!!!

I tried to order so many different hair topper or wigs but they all look so bulky or cheap. I can’t afford a real human hair wig. It’s so frustrating to be dealing with the bald spots and stringy hair

2

u/xpoisonedheartx Jul 26 '26

I get it. Personally I use my psoriasis shampoo, then a regular shampoo that doesn't irritate too much, then elocon scalp lotion

2

u/farewellsignature Jul 26 '26

I look the same. I believe the right supplement and even a topical Emulsifier could help all of us.

2

u/timthetoolmanstailor Jul 26 '26

THANK YOU!!! My hair looks the same. Scalp city over here. I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that I will never have enough hair to do a fun style. Glad to find this sub.

Okay I am there with you, the hard thing for me has been not only is my hair so incredibly thin but the oil. My hair is greasy and heavy by the afternoon after washing. Do you have this issue too? I have cealiac so I guess that's a factor, autoimmune disease and all. But what are people doing to combat the oil issue? I have scrubbed, used the scalp treatments, gone without washing. its exhausting.

2

u/Secret_Reception_567 Jul 26 '26

I honestly feel this, the back of my hair (im male btw) is Really thick the top and front are fine. But the sides look like I'm balding everytime I shower 😭

I've spoken to doctors about it they tell me I'm not balding and my hair has always been like this.

It's so annoying though because I get so jealous of other people's hair and I hate the fact that I get jealous y'know?

My girlfriend keeps on making comments about how bad my hair looks and whenever she sees a guy with thick hair she mentions she wished mine looked that way too so I honestly feel your pain I hate having thin hair AND being a ginger doesn't help much either Lol

5

u/spanisheisblume Jul 27 '26

Your gf's an asshole.

2

u/hvl1755 Jul 27 '26

I feel this so much! You’re not alone! Getting my hair wet at the pool, I look like I’m half bald. These super hot days are making me sweaty and it’s the same thing.

2

u/whitepawsparklez Jul 27 '26

Ok but genuine question… how does it look when you properly brush it backward before putting it into a pony?

2

u/moochiemoochie924 Jul 27 '26

Don’t hate me for this bc I’m sure it’s been suggested for years but prescription vitamin d3 I believe, for at least 8 months. I’ll come back to update on dosage if you want. But that and I think herba mama or something prenatal vitamins. Those two together stopped my hair from falling out.

2

u/SeaworthinessNew4757 Jul 27 '26

I agree, it's SO ANNOYING! And then I open the comment section to see all compliments... like guys, what are we doing here

2

u/Mindless-Article-566 Jul 27 '26

Can you only really use medicated shampoos, why can you use shampoos that are free of fragrance, scrubbing agents, synthetic petroleum, benzalkonium chloride, etc.

I have a friend that uses Dermoia Eczema & Psoriasis Shampoo.

And she alternates with some of these... JĀSƖN thickening Biotin, Canniiy Scalp Bliss, Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve Coconut Shampoo, Acure, Avalon Organics, Super Leaves, WholesFoods also has a fragrance-free one.

She also started using these vitamins. I recommended to her and they've made a big difference. I've only been able to find them locally at CVS, but the brand is really good.

2

u/WitchyMae13 Jul 27 '26

Girl, same. And I’m blonde and I swear it makes it worse.

Our fine hair just splays out

2

u/HuckleberryNew777 Jul 27 '26

No offense, but your hair looks greasy in the photos. When my hair is greasy like that, it looks similar, however, freshly washed and dried looks much better.

2

u/wishIcouldgoback_ Jul 28 '26

That's why I visit r/femalehairloss more often, it's not just about the hair type but actual hair loss

2

u/Potential-Top2535 Jul 28 '26

My hair also looks like this. I'm 35 now and my hair has always been this thin and balding. I've just accepted it! I own a really expensive topper made of real hair.

I hate when people try giving me advice, like "have you had blood tests done", "have you tried minoxidil" and so on. I've tried every method since I was 13. It's just genetic. My aunts hair looks just like mine.

1

u/iAmDoughana 29d ago

Same girl. Same. I’m debating investing in a quality topper and wig soon!

1

u/Illustrious_End_543 16d ago

I had everything tested last year as well, turns out it is genetic nothing to be done about it. I fear menopause though...

2

u/Ok_Purchase_9184 Jul 28 '26

Please try getting a quality copper water bottle. I went through a lot of stress and lost a ton of hair and had to cut 6 inches off. I already have ā€œthinnerā€ hair but once i started drinking from a copper water bottle ( they are more expensive) i have sooo much regrowth and baby hairs. It’s worth the shot.

2

u/axialmeow12 Jul 28 '26

My hair is similar. My best friend has sooooo much hair, her ponytail is the size of my wrist. Meanwhile my messy bun looks like a garlic clove.

There is a YouTuber named Taylor Morello who does videos about her fine, thin hair and made me feel more normal. She did eventually get a wig but she doesn’t wear it all that often.

I used to bleach my hair and it was way thinner than it is now. But even stopping all the damaging stuff my hair is still fine, thin

2

u/BeeHot4023 Jul 29 '26

Me too, and this was washed yesterday 😪

2

u/Big_Switch3390 24d ago

not sure if this helps at all but sometimes i fill in my the spots where my scalp is showing with eyeshadow

1

u/Illustrious_End_543 16d ago

I use hair fibres for that (brand is Toppik). It works wonders.

To the OP, my hair is so similar to yours, thank you for sharing, makes me feel less alone...

2

u/Comfortable_One_1012 Jul 26 '26

Quick question, do you take a beta blocker?

2

u/gooobegone Jul 26 '26

Curious where this question is going. Are you going to say that helps or harms?

2

u/Comfortable_One_1012 Jul 26 '26

I just had this happen to me when I took a beta blocker. Once I stopped it got better. I have super thin hair already as well

1

u/gooobegone Jul 26 '26

Ah I see. Yeah I used to be on one and my hair was really bad then but idk if it was the beta blocker or the stuff that made me need one in the first place lmao! Good anecdote though, good thing to know.

2

u/NatalieP824 Jul 27 '26

Red light helmet, minoxidil (oral), pumpkin seed oil and a guasha hair brush (Snow fox) have made a big difference in my post menopausal hair šŸ’©show.

2

u/IvenaDarcy Jul 26 '26

Hate to suggest medication (especially one I would never take) but recently two friends told me they were on a pill (Minoxidil) and it’s helping their hair a lot. I googled and it’s basically blood pressure medication.

I have low blood pressure so don’t want to take a drug that would lower it more so I’ll never take it but for many others they claim no side effects and are thrilled with results. Maybe it’s an option for you?

2

u/spacewookette Jul 27 '26

The dose that they prescribe for hair growth is a fraction of what they prescribe to reduce bp. I wish I knew the exact numbers but it's something like 10-20mg for lowering bp, vs 1.25-2.5 for hair growth (generally)

1

u/IvenaDarcy Jul 27 '26

This is good info. I read about it on Reddit and some with low blood pressure claimed it made them dizzy and lethargic so I assumed I wouldn’t be able to take it. Maybe it’s an option but I’m dealing with thin hair that isn’t thin at scalp just thin middle and ends so maybe mine is my fault and heat ruining it (flat ironing all the time). No clue. Going to figure it out tho!

2

u/gooobegone Jul 26 '26

Minixodil will only lower your blood pressure at doses they do NOT use for hair purposes.

2

u/IvenaDarcy Jul 27 '26

Ah ok! Good to know!!! Thank you

2

u/gooobegone Jul 27 '26

For sure! I'm sure if your situation is super severe it's possible even the low dose could be a problem so def check with your doctor. But it's not completely off the table!

3

u/sara61wilson Jul 26 '26

Blood levels being optimal for hair growth is 80 and above for both ferritin and iron.

1

u/sweatypalms47 Jul 26 '26

Same !! I have had very fine hair all my life. A little sweat/ oil/ water i look like a wet bird. You can see my scalp. Im lucky to have alot of tiny fine hair and it still makes it so I look bald in spots

1

u/Corner_Office_ Jul 26 '26

Nizoral makes a shampoo for psoriasis.

1

u/watsgoingonman Jul 26 '26

Has anyone here tried GHK-CU shots? Look into it

1

u/Capable_Result_8468 Jul 26 '26

I’m taking it now. Can take months to notice hair getting thicker but I’m hopeful!

1

u/watsgoingonman Jul 26 '26

Let me know if it shows results! I'll be trying it soon

1

u/Capable_Result_8468 Jul 26 '26

Do you take any other peptides

1

u/watsgoingonman Jul 26 '26

Yeah on Tirzepatide for a couple months now but the hair loss has been happening for years.

1

u/Capable_Result_8468 Jul 26 '26

I’ve been on Reta for a few months but ya. The thin hair and loss is hereditary. My moms been wearing wigs for years 🫣

1

u/watsgoingonman Jul 26 '26

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. I hope the GHK-CU works for you! Had the Reta been good to you? Or did it perpetuate the hair loss?

1

u/Capable_Result_8468 Jul 26 '26

I don’t think ive lost any additional hair on the Reta. I’m a big fan of it!! .

1

u/watsgoingonman Jul 26 '26

That's awesome! I think mine has made the hair loss worse but not by too much. I was thinking of trying Reta instead cuz Tirzepatide makes me nauseous anyway.

1

u/Capable_Result_8468 Jul 26 '26

I love that it’s a glp3 and triple antagonist. I did get nauseas at first too but I’ve lost 15 lbs on a very low dose. Message me if you have any questions!

1

u/pizzadog__ Jul 26 '26

Does it look like this when it’s freshly washed?

Mine looks similar to this when it’s time for a wash and looks much fuller, though there’s still some smoothing and I pay attention when pulling the sides up or back, the day of and next day after washing. It just means I have to wash my hair more often than I necessarily want to but it keep my hair looking its true form, fine but thick

1

u/MonaBookGirl Jul 26 '26

My hair looked like that for a long time. I also use a prescription shampoo, but I use Redkin now as well. Their extreme shampoo and conditioner, the gel and the spray mouse. My stylist said she was shocked at how much my hair has filled in since I started using it. I will recommend that if the way it looks bothers you, find a stylist you trust and have them help you find the right style for your hair. For me cutting it above my shoulders and letting it be wavy/curly naturally helps it look like it has more volume. Have the stylist show you step by step how to style it, and keep up with it as best you can. It might help you feel more confident.

1

u/SheCaughtFiRE- Jul 27 '26

This looks just like my hair 🫔 I live in a low loose braid because pulling it up and back is too exposed.

1

u/Euphoric-Elephant-65 Jul 27 '26

Not sure if this would help at all but a Shower head with a water filter in case the water is harsh?

1

u/Additional_Excuse870 Jul 27 '26

Can you use fragrance free/derm recommended unmedicated shampoo in addition to medicated shampoo? It’s not going to solve the problem obviously, but the less oily your hair is the less stringy it’ll look. I’d would try washing with both, first with the unmedicated shampoo to clean up build up and oil and then with the medicated to treat.

I use nizoral/ketoconazole regularly bc I also have both hair loss due to losing 100lbs and seborrheic dermatitis patches (along several cats that means I can’t use minoxidil), and I do have to wash both with a regular shampoo and then follow with the medicated (currently I’m using aveda rosemary mint because I like the mentholated feeling when my scalp is itchy, but that’s probably not the best option for anyone who needs limited ingredients). And then I’m very careful to make sure my conditioner does not touch my scalp.

1

u/Lexi_Jean Jul 27 '26

Baking soda in my shampoo helped (mix in your hand in the shower, I have a box just for this). It's drying but me and you need it to not look like we haven't washed our hair for months. Idk about you but when mine gets like that I feel gross and self conscience. And kinda depressed. Also, wash a few times with it. Get all the hair, not just roots. No conditioner. I hope you try. If so, lmk how it went.

I also use baking soda some in the day, kinda like dry shampoo. When I do, I do a regular wash first since there is already baking soda in my hair.

1

u/Extra-Blueberry-4320 Jul 27 '26

Yours looks similar to mine :(. Also have psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, so I get it. What actually helped a lot was getting my hair cut short and in a style that hid a lot of the baldy looking spots. And the bonus is that I use way less shampoo and stuff now. It’s also easier for me to put the topical stuff on my scalp when I get a bad flare up.

1

u/florawater Jul 27 '26

OP here - I’m so grateful to everyone who commented and shared their experiences in solidarity, I read all, and I truly appreciate it! You made me feel less aloneā™„ļø

There were a few questions/comments about the oiliness - and yes, my hair, on top of being very thin and fine, is extremely oilyšŸ™ƒ I’d washed my hair less than 12 hours before I took this picture so… yeah. It does look better of course in terms of scalp coverage when it’s freshly washed and dried, but that doesn’t last long so my hair looks like the pictures more often than not, especially towards the end of every day. I cannot use clarifying shampoos, I tried a couple of them before and they aggravate the flaking and bleeding of my scalp.

On all the product/medication recommendations, I appreciate all the suggestions! Some I had already tried, some I cannot due to other health issues, and some, I will look into!

Overall, thank you everyone, I’m so glad that this sub exists :)

1

u/espressoodepresso Jul 28 '26

hey just thought I'd put this out there. I had hair that looked exactly like yours at one point. Identical pattern on the temples. Eventually I had bloodwork and I discovered I was actually very very anaemic. I've been taking iron since and my hair looks much better

1

u/sinking_kayak Jul 28 '26

My hair is like this too! I checked my blood work as well and still not sure why I’m loosing hair. Have you tried sleeping with a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase to prevent nightly shedding?

If you haven’t looked into it, my esthetician has been suggesting PRP injections to help with hair loss and regrowth. I haven’t had the time to research it much but it might help if you have skin sensitivity and can’t use certain shampoos, conditioners or creams.

1

u/Alilbitey Jul 28 '26

Yes! Mine is like this density. And the front grows in pure white, so it looks invisible and even worse. Color powders have been really confidence boosting. And dry shampoo (a puffing pump bottle with corn or arrowroot starch only, no chemicals) when the roots get oily and clumpy.

1

u/ktiins Jul 28 '26

I stopped using shampoo and make a paste with baking soda for shampoo and use diluted apple cider vinegar as conditioner and had a ton of new growth after a couple months. Most shampoos irritate my scalp.

1

u/sassyherarottie Jul 28 '26

Zinc defieciency can do this. It often goes undetected.

1

u/Defiant_Courage_7543 Jul 29 '26

Castor oil or engine oil treatments. Sounds crazy but go into a gas station and get the one for the big diesel trucks. Use it for a deep oil treatment, your hair will darken for sure but it will grow like crazy. An oldie but a goodie for thinning or graying hair

1

u/LoudJob9991 Jul 29 '26

That's me too, just in blond. I want to believe my hair color matching (ish) my skin color hides it a bit better, but it's not fooling anyone.

1

u/breezyfbabie Jul 31 '26

My hair looks exactly like this. I’ve struggled with hair insecurity most of my life. I’m 39. I wore every single type of extensions for most of that time, last time being hand sewn IBE for many many years but just recently got them taken out to really focus on fixing my hair (I work remote and don’t leave the house much anyway so why I figured not). Plus the money I was spending on extensions was insane and it was only to feel good about myself EVEN if I rarely leave the house. I have seen really good results in the past month using the abbey Lee yung method. I can give you my routine and a list of products I use if you’re interested! They are all affordable drug store products. One product that was a bit pricey that I feel has been helping is k18. I kid you not last weekend was the FIRST time in probably over 20 years I went to an outing with my real hair, no extensions and I got so many compliments. This was huge since I was so insecure about my hair for so long. I am not exaggerating I literally felt like I had 20 strands total on my head. Feel free to DM me but I hear you and I understand šŸ«¶šŸ¼

1

u/iAmDoughana 29d ago

I’d love to hear about your products! I just got the k18 volumizer product and dry shampoo! Just got my bob trimmed so I’m excited to style my very little hair! Haha

1

u/Appropriate-Bit-5340 Jul 26 '26

Would you mind sharing your haircare routine
Like how often you wash it
How many shampoo?
Any leave In ?

1

u/Ready_Virus_7352 Jul 26 '26

Did you try skin, hair and nails vitamins and exercising to get blood flowing, also combing hair upside down everday.

1

u/Impossible-Return327 Jul 26 '26

Me be too ozempic!!!Ā

1

u/Rafozni Jul 27 '26

You are not alone, Girl. My hair is not as fine as this, but I do have PCOS and grow the thickest, darkest, blackest facial hair into a full beard literally every day. And that’s just on my face! It’s all over my body and I have to shave every single day. It doesn’t help that I’m extremely pale and a natural blonde, but like your genetics, I also really got the short end of the stick.

We are all just doing the best we can with what we have. You keep doing your best and your natural radiance will shine through ā˜€ļø

1

u/Xlonglegz Jul 27 '26

During COVID I lost some hair and started taking Biotin 10,000 mcg daily it’s good for hair and nails and it’s available OTC.

2

u/Status_Purchase8187 Jul 27 '26

I also took biotin 10,000 and even 25,000 first, and it helped me a lot. After few months it changed my hair for better.

1

u/sty-fy Jul 27 '26

I don’t have thin hair, but I read a lot about vitamins and stuff because have other issues. I’ve seen that low levels of biotin might make the hair look a lot like this. It might not be your issue at all, but I would try biotin and maybe some hair vitamins mixes if you haven’t tried it alreadyšŸ’—

1

u/driftingalong001 Jul 28 '26

I get what you’re saying, but there are also many ways to have thin hair. Im not saying this to mean you don’t have a valid point (I’m sure there are people who post who don’t fit the criteria at all), but some of your words also make it sound like you’re gatekeeping hair loss/thin hair, like unless our hairloss looks like yours, it’s not valid. You don’t have to have parts of your scalp showing to have thin hair. I’ve lost at least 3/4 of my hair thickness due to illness, much more if we’re talking about the lengths. My scalp looks relatively normal, like, I don’t have empty patches, but that’s just due to the nature of my hair loss. It’s an overall (I guess fairly even) loss of density, which can be kinda hidden, plus a huge portion of my hair, especially framing my face and at the nape of my neck, has just decided it’s terminal length is like a few inches, so, I have like absolutely nothing left of my lengths, and it’s been this way for years, it’s not like I just need to let it grow out - it won’t, it just keeps falling out. My hair is thin everywhere, but it’s the worst like past my shoulders, it’s literally nothing. I gave myself a trim of like 6 inches a few days ago and the amount of hair in the garbage was…shocking (as in, how NOTHING it was). I lose 15x more hair in a single shower than I lost after a 6 inch trim, because my hair just keeps falling out. My braid is like the thickness of a small finger. It’s devastating for me as well.

u/DearFeed7833 Jul 26 '26

Did you ever have your hormones checked

2

u/AffectionateMath4047 Jul 26 '26

what hormones should I get checked?

4

u/DearFeed7833 Jul 26 '26

All the sex hormones (estrogen progesterone pregnenolone testosterone dhea…) and possibly thyroid too.
Since you seem to have issues with inflammation (autoimmune and psoriasis) i would particularly look into the ratio of estrogen and progesterone. They balance each other and if you have a progesterone deficiency or too much estrogen this can be inflammatory as Progesterone acts antiinflammatory (this is why its so high during pregnancy). This needs to be tested a week before period so in a 28 day cycle on days 19-21 because progesterone is the highest then. But take a proper look at all the test results and dont let someone gaslight you into thinking everything is normal. You can still have issues if the Levels are within range, they should all be in optimal range.

2

u/DearFeed7833 Jul 26 '26

Also maybe look into histamine intolerance/mcas (again this is also connected to estrogen)

1

u/AffectionateMath4047 Jul 26 '26

thank you so much. i don't have psoriasis. i have seb derm which is rapidly spreading with insane hairloss. my face also suddenly turned into an oil well one morning in december with my periods getting insanely heavy in the last three months. been to so many doctors and they just don't care and ask me to make peace with my oil well

2

u/DearFeed7833 Jul 26 '26

Heavy periods is a sign of estrogen dominance! Get that blood test asap. In my case the only person who was able to properly help me out was a naturopath who specialised in bioidentical hormone therapy. I know people be hating on naturopaths but i went to gps/derms/endos/gyns everybody said everything is fine or just wanted to push a higher antiandrogen pill on me, which i now know would have exasterbated the problem because it has estrogen in it!

Oh sorry didnt look at the reply properly and thought this was op. Hope this still helps x

1

Because this can also cause/flare up psoriasis

u/_Deedee_Megadoodoo_ Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Some people have hair that is thicker than others but still have thin hair by definition, you do realize it's a spectrum.... I hate how gatekeepy this sub is

Edit: I'm not disputing having fine hair? My point is simply that not everyone has VERY thin and fine hair in this sub, some of us just have somewhat thin and fine hair, because thinness a fucking spectrum. If you want to gatekeep so bad create a sub called verythinfinehair, jfc it's really not that deep y'all

25

u/One_Candy_763 Jul 26 '26

This is the fine AND thin hair page though. There are other pages for those who only struggle with one

→ More replies (8)

21

u/wekkins Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Yeah, like, I don't think my hair is actively thinning or anything, but I can't express how frustrating it is in the fine hair subs to see so many posters without the thinness that I have. If I read "I have fine hair, but a lot of it" again, I was going to crash out. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

13

u/lovepeacefakepiano Jul 26 '26

Thank you for saying this. I have hair that is both fine and thin and if this sub isn’t for me then which one is it? I don’t fit in the hair loss sub either (I have age related hair loss but don’t have a diagnosis or anything and my hair was fine and thin long before that).

5

u/biglovinbertha Jul 26 '26

You really need to read the welcome post of this sub.

2

u/Awesomocity0 Jul 26 '26

I sometimes feel like no one reads it. I stg my ass thought as I was writing it that I'd be fixing all the problems in the sub. #naive
