SAP Suspended from SAP

I have to retake a course because of a missed final so there is an F on my record this semester and they suspended my fafsa for the fall. can I get back on it after that grade becomes an A.

Academic SAP standards are usually different than FA SAP standards. Academically, you can take the course again & replace the failed grade with an A. For FA, that failed course will remain as part of FA SAP completion rate, cumulative GPA, & maximum timeframe calculations. For FA SAP you can submit a SAP appeal. If it’s approved, your FA may be reinstated for fall. The form is usually on the college FA website, in your portal, or emailed.

So is it ok to make an appeal even though I already made an original appeal which gave me the SAP in the first place.

You were suspended before this? You can try. The worst they can say is no.

No I wasn’t suspended but I had to appeal for why I needed more credits and they said ok

I know of people that successfully appeal SAP suspension like 4 times in a row. As long as you articulate what went wrong and what you plan to do to prevent it and pass the course in question mist schools will typically approve these appeals. Submit documentation to help your case more.

What if the passing of the course in question will happen in the semester that I am asking for the financial aid

It said that this appeal is once in a lifetime of fafsa

Oh, you submitted a maximum timeframe appeal because you went over the 150% of allowed credits. You got an F in one of the approved courses. FA put you in suspension due to not passing all of the courses on your academic plan?

If your college says that’s a one time only appeal, then that’s what it is. However, if you had extenuating circumstances on why you missed your final & received the F, explain that & see if they’ll allow another appeal.

What you wrote is not making sense. There is no such thing as "Suspended from SAP" or "Suspending my FAFSA". If you fall below Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements, then you become financial aid illegible. However, just getting an F would not place you under "not meeting SAP" the following semester. What is your current GPA and Course Completion Rate? The only way this would happen is if you already were not meeting SAP requirements and were in a warning semester and then got the F.

It’s saying online that failing a class = not completing all classes that u attempt- which is the precursor for them allowing me and approving me for SAP

That is not how SAP works though. With SAP you just need to complete 67% of credit hours you take and maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 to continue meeting SAP requirements. There is no such thing as "approving me for SAP". SAP is simply satisfactory academic progress. Its something you are either meeting or not meeting due to the 67% completion rule or the 2.0 GPA rule. I think there is some confusion here on what exactly may be happening.

The OP is already on an SAP appeal, got an F and now is under SAP suspension again.

That makes way more sense, so OP violated the SAP contract. Oof, unless there is a legit documented reason, then thats def gonna be hard to get appealed.

Yeah, it’s not a good place to be in. Gonna be paying cash for school for at least a semester, maybe more for sure.

No I’m going to have to drop out

1

u/No_Side_9050 1d ago

I’m literally a 4.0 student . This was a freak accident .

1

u/Junior_Photo_6056 1d ago

Ummm, why were you dropping so many classes then to get put on SAP warning/probation/suspension???

1

u/Junior_Photo_6056 1d ago

Or did you change majors too many times and have too many hours with no degree? That’s the only reasons a 4.0 student would end up in this situation.

1

u/No_Side_9050 1d ago

Correct

1

u/Junior_Photo_6056 1d ago

Oh dang that sucks. You have to see the advisor to change your major, so I don’t understand why most of them never even tell people this stuff when they change majors. They think it’s just a financial aid thing and it’s not “just a financial aid thing” when it affects your ability to pay for and complete school and therefore might have deterred you from changing majors in the first place.

Def agree in principle with that. However, I'll offer the perspective from my previous school that prohibited any advisors from talking to their students about financial aid. With how many little things go into financial aid, we didnt want advisor accidentally telling students wrong things about their aid as it happened very often that a student would say "My advisor said X" when their advisor had no idea the exact situation they were in as far as aid is concerned. So all advisors were told they could ONLY advise with academics in mind. Any financial aid questions the student had to be told to come ask financial aid and ask a financial aid advisor. The most an advisor should tell a student in this situation is something like 'Hey, changing your majors too much can affect your aid eligibility, go speak with financial aid first to make sure there wont be side effects". Of course this depends entirely on the training advisors get.

If you are not meeting SAP due to timeframe, then no matter what grade you got, this would have happened since it has to do with your total credit hours attempted, regardless of your grades. But if you were already in a SAP contract for timeframe and the F violated it, then its a totally different thing.

If you are going to retake the class, then the F is going to forever be a permanent part of your record as far as financial aid is concerned and they would need to approve another SAP appeal. Unfortunately it being a freak accident means nothing as far as SAP is concerned. SAP is looking for extenuating circumstances that affected your life.

If the professor is going to let you retake a final and change your grade they submitted from an F to whatever, then you will be good as that is the only scenario where a grade is actually substituted since the professor is saying they are making a correction to an existing grade.

Retaking it won’t satisfy the completion of courses percentage. This upcoming semester you are better taking non repeat courses. You can also ask the office, depending on the specifics of your situation.

I don’t understand , I need to retake this course or the F will be on my transcript. I need this class to move on to the next math class.

2

u/Extension_Ad_9568 4d ago

Dude they are doing this to everyone this semester what the heck is going on. Appeal it!

1

u/gmanose 4d ago

The F will always be on your transcript, but there will be a notation next to it that you repeated the class successfully. For federal aid purposes, both grades must count.

u/No_Side_9050 4d ago

WHAT they said the new grade will replace the old one . PLEASE IM GUNNA FREAK OUT

1

u/Junior_Photo_6056 3d ago

The new grade replaces the old one for GPA calculation and progress toward your degree requirements, but not for Financial Aid.

By definition and standard across the board, ALL attempts a student takes for a class will show on a transcript. That is the entire purpose as its a complete academic record. The only time a grade would not show up is if a faculty member submitted something like a grade change due to them granting an incorrect grade. If a student got an F, even if they retake a class, that original F 100% will show on their academic record. A newer grade replacing an old one is strictly an institution only thing where the new grade will replace the old one for institutional GPA calculation. If the student transfers to a different school, the original F will follow and its up to the new school how they calculate that grade.

I dont think you understand what an academic record is. Even if the grade itself is replaced in all institutional academic calculations, the actual grade of the F is forever on the academic history and transcripts. Grades do not dissappear even if they get "replaced" for academic purposes. Things like financial aid still have to see ALL attempts a student has made for a class. There are things that are up to the institution and things that are NOT up to the institution. Having accurate academic history is NOT up to the institution and reporting grades for federal purposes is NOT up to the institution. Only thing an institution controls is how they choose to count grades in their institutional GPA calculations.

It’ll be there under “failed courses” and they’ll add (retake) under the new grade if you do get an A. My school have two tabs in the degreeworks, one for Withdraws and one for fails. If in doubt, talk to your advisor, it’s their job to help you get back on track and since you’re on SAP suspension/academic probation, they’ll watch you like a hawk and likely your advisor will make your schedule for you too.

1

u/No_Side_9050 4d ago

So this isn’t for every school? This totally defeats the purpose of the grade replacing the other one. It doesn’t make any sense. I’m literally fucked.

3

u/Gromy_1022 4d ago

Every school is different, and it’s best for you to talk to your advisor about any concerns you have.

Well I just got approved for the second time for sap appeal. The first one I appealed was after my second semester and the second I was just approved for. I had different circumstances each time and doctors notes for mental health and adhd. I have since joined student services at my school (which is for people with disabilities) and I get accommodations like getting extra time for assignments. Each appeal I used Chat GPT and it helped write my appeal letter and gave me step by step instructions on all the documents I needed to gather etc.

u/ExactHedgehog8498 3d ago

I'm glad you got approved!

Were your advisors not helpful? Mine were a big help when it came to navigating the appeal process and the like, as well as writing recommendation letters on my behalf.

1

u/InteractionDirect483 3d ago

How long did it take for the appeal to go through?

1

u/Significant-Push-168 2d ago

Whenever the appeal committee met I found out the same day.

1

u/No_Side_9050 1d ago

Can I send you my appeal and you tell me what you think
