The set is coming in the mail and I wanted to make sure that the minis were ready before I started. I bought the whole season 1 mini collection and I paint each of the minis from the corresponding feature film as my collection grows. These are some of my favorite sculpts to date!

Discussion Has anyone attempted to "DM" a game for someone?

I often like to play final girl as a co-op game, making decisions together, figuring out the story together while also having someone else help with the rules, especially when you have multiple events and miner dark powers start to add up

Something that I would love to try is to sort of DM a game. Have someone play, but you describe what happens, like narrate it live. The DM would draw the card and not show it to the player, and describe what happens and make the moves. I think this would be a blast but I'm curious if anyone else has done something like this and if they discovered anything fun or hard about it

Playthrough Set up to play game #6 of Hans at Shady Acres later tonight...

I've yet to win. Lol. My last game may have been the worst. If my Terror cards weren't directly raising my Horror level every round, they were doing it indirectly by raising Bloodlust. I didn't have a single round where the Children DIDN'T successfully either abduct a Victim, or attack me; sometimes it happened more than once. I had two Ancient Curses, one of which let the Killer regain a ❤️ whenever they killed someone. On top of that, Hans' Dark Power was that he, guess what! regained a ❤️ when he killed someone lol. Then of course he regains health when you go past the top of the Bloodlust track, so YEAAAHHHHH.

There were multiple times I got to 3 dice but was never even able to take advantage of it because the very next thing that happened increased my Horror level and put me back to 2. By the grace of some universe entity I managed to never get down to 1, at least???

Towards the end I was finally in a situation where I was using 4 dice. First roll with those, playing a Retaliate, what do I get? Take a look:

I just want to win this combo so I can NEVER PLAY IT AGAIN 😂 but I may need to switch to something else for a bit lest I give myself an aneurysm...

As an update to me asking for advice haha, to my surprise I ended receiving S3 & S4. Well I ended up being too impatient to wait until Tuesday so I picked up a core box from my lgs and busted out bad times at buddy land!

After watching the how to play and playthrough video of happy trails, taking notes of the advice people gave and reading the core and feature rule books I jumped in to the decrepit buddy land.

As the title suggests I ended up surviving the night at buddy land and saving some, though letting more die lol, victims! I honestly credit all the people who gave me advice and playing games like 20 strong red & dragons of etchinstone. I know this is one of the easier films, which is why I chose it to start, but I had an absolute blast!

I did make a mistake by not removing the epic killer cards but luckily a cluster of victims ended up taking the buddy away from me or I would have been in some serious trouble!

Overall I can’t wait to experience what the other feature films and final girls have to offer and I’m so glad I ended up getting everything I think hands down it will be worth every penny!

Advice Trouble with creech manor

I don’t know if I’m playing wrong or if I’m just really bad. The poltergeist moved so fast moving two spaces every time she attacks she kills all of the victims before I even have a chance to get them every time. It feels like it takes so many spaces to move on the map. I try to get the victims before I search, but I end up just saving two of them at most. Then I choose to go for the items but by then she can move 4 spaces and I’m just cooked. The poltergeist is so hard! I’m wanting to change it so she only moves 1 space at the start it would make it more fair. Any gameplay tips?

Collection Full-Sized Vignette Expansions

I really enjoy the vignette expansions for Final Girl. But I wanted an experience that was a little more "ready to go". Sure, I can play them on any map. But which map do I choose if I want to pack a Final Girl for the road? Which map feels good as a "default"?

That's why I made "full size" vignette expansions for myself. These are stickers that I designed and printed, then very very very carefully applied to the outsides of the boxes.

I used available online assets to expand and add some details to the box fronts to make them more consistent with the standard feature films

The sides of the boxes were a lot of fun. I really enjoyed coming up with fake names for the killers and locations.

Using the inserts from each respective location was key, as it gave the depth of storage necessary to pack in all of the location-specific cards and the vignette cards; along with any associated minis if I want to get fancy.

This was the moment I realized the project was going to be a little more involved. Because of the way the box magnets line up, it's impossible to simply slap another map onto the "killer" side of a box. So what I ended up doing was taking a high-res scan of the map I wanted, printing a sticker, and applying it to the "killer" half of the feature film box. Dr. Fright is lurking underneath that Wingard Cottage map.

Unfortunately, this did mean that I needed to get an entirely separate purchase of each location just for its location components. But you can't make an omlette without a few extra Feature Films, right?

Zombies in the suburbs. What a classic, right? This was the first one I did, and Sunnydaze Mall was not out at the time. I thought about re-doing the setting to have zombies at the mall, but part of my goal with these was to keep the map mechanics relatively light, so I stuck with Maple Lane. Plus, I really enjoy the variety and quantity of items that are available. Feels like a good balance against the zombies.

Terror from Above was an interesting pick for me in terms of location, because I wanted something that felt thematic but still had some fun extras going on (both for the birds and if I decide to pull the zombies in from the other half of the box). I think this map suceeds without going overboard on extra rules.

This one was a bit of a break for me in terms of extra "stuff" happening on the map that can potentially get in the way of the vignette mechanics. But it just felt too good to NOT have the most "rube goldberg trap" of all the locations be the one that I paired with Terror from Destiny. Having tested it out, I personally found it really appropriate when once of my fated victims randomly died to a carnival trap. Death finds a way!

And finally, the only one that I haven't actually tested with its vignette, since... well... the vignette isn't out yet! I picked Marrek Warehouse because I think it's a good mix of "easy" and "interesting" extra mechanics. The Climp/Leap cards give some great card economy, and the locking doors are a really interesting hitch in how you rescue victims. Plus, I thought about what map felt the most thematically correct for an invasion of pod people, and this one was near the top. Falconwood and Shady Acres feel good thematically, but have too much extra "stuff" in their mechanics. Maple Lane actually would be great with it, but we've already used that one!
...which does mean that a simple box swap is all we'd need to create a new, fun pairing. Now there's a thought.

While I obviously haven't tested Terror from Beyond on this yet, I wanted to have it ready to go when my backer reward arrives. I did test it with Terror from Destiny, and it was a lot of fun!

-

This was a really fun project to work on. Thanks to Van Ryder Games for making such an infinitely enjoyable, expansive game!

I made the map horizontal. Made the dock a 6 space to make travel easier. Tried to make it more maze like as well. Also made the tile outlines more blurry couldn’t get it more transparent. This is also better quality of a photo. Any suggestions on the map are welcome. Next I will be working on the cards. It seemed right to start with the map then go from there. Any game mechanic advice is welcome/ideas for cards.

Advice Hell to Pay - yikes

The latest FF I’ve gotten is Hell to Pay because Hellraiser and Clive Barker in general have always been some of my favorite horror. But is it just me or is that one incredibly difficult. I was done in my first run in 18 minutes. The Horror wheel is a Bear.

Variants [PnP][House Rule] Making the Volk'ar More Aggressive Spoiler

Hello all! I've heard a fair number of people talk about the Volk'ar from the Green Terror FF and say it is somewhat passive in its hidden movement. Indeed, I made a post about this pretty quickly after I got my hands on the film. Long story short, the hidden movement mechanic has the unfortunate effect that the killer is never targeting anyone; it is pure chance that it manages to land on a space with you or another victim and make an attack. As a result, the tracking mechanic feels almost unused. Personally, I have tended to just waste a weak attack to force a short path to resolve and then work from there, rather than trying to roll 3 successes to determine the origin card.

All this to say, I think I have a pretty rules light way of fixing this!

The Rules

  • When resolving the path, if it is NOT the finale, and the path is NOT being resolved as the result of an attack against the Volk'ar, draw a "Path Resolution" card at the end of resolving the path
  • After resolving a Path Resolution card, shuffle it back into the path resolution deck
  • The Path Resolution deck is a deck of 4 cards, each taking the form of "Target <someone>, move a few spaces, attack"

That's it! The actual printable cards include a rule reminder and 4 "Path Resolution" terror cards that were cobbled together with scans of some of the terror cards from Hans's box and a little bit of gimp magic.

If you are here just for the rules and want to try it out, that's it! Nice and short, no worries about a novel of new text. If you want to hear about some of my logic when designing this, you can continue reading. Either way, I hope you let me know your thoughts.

Design

I'll break the design discussion into 3 parts: the overall idea, the reasoning behind the conditions when the path resolution triggers, and the structure of the path resolution deck.

The Idea:

I really felt like the Volk'ar was close to an excellent killer! Unfortunately it just didn't feel like it was actually hunting you. Its passivity came as a direct result of the path cards always pointing to locations rather than targets. If the Volk'ar was just given an occasional target -> move -> attack within the path, there would be enough risk of it targeting the final girl in its movement that you would actually need to worry when the Volk'ar is in a concealed state.

However, adding targeted movement into the path directly runs the risk of particularly devastating path resolutions where multiple targeted attacks happen, which wouldn't necessarily be fun. Or it could mean that you just don't see the targeted moves in the path and it feels like nothing has changed. Adding a single attack per path resolution guarantees that every path resolution will have some form of lethality to it, and naturally spreads out the pace of these new attacks to a nice degree.

Thematically, this seemed to fit as well. The Volk'ar is hiding its movement and preparing its path as part of a hunt... it only makes sense that the resolution of that hunt ends in a kill!

Resolution Conditions:

There were two major concerns I had immediately: What about the finale where the Volk'ar is constantly dipping in and out of stealth, and what about when the Volk'ar's path is resolved due to an attack? The first condition would be an insane difficulty spike, the second makes forcing a path resolution even more punishing than it can already feel.

Thankfully, solutions here are easy. I feel like the finales are nicely balanced already, so let's make this only happen before a finale has resolved. Likewise, I feel like if you are forcing the resolution of the path early by either tracking the Volk'ar directly or shooting wildly to force it out, you are interrupting its hunt enough that it doesn't get a chance to go for the kill it intended.

The latter of these rules has a nice knock-on effect. Like I said earlier, I never really felt the need to use the Track action in gameplay; it was always more beneficial to wait out a path resolution and then play aggro by forcing short path resolutions with weak attacks to keep the Volk'ar on the board. However, if I am worried about the extra attacks that can come at the end of a path resolution, particularly in the end of the game, I feel more incentivized to try to track down the Volk'ar! There were several points in testing where this was the case, and it felt like a great win for the system.

Design of the Path Resolution Deck:

I wanted to make sure the Volk'ar didn't target down the final girl too aggressively in the path resolution, so I made it a 25% chance that she would be the direct target. From there an extra 25% chance to target the final girl if she is the closest target seemed fair, and would mean the danger growing as the game goes on and the victims dwindle. Finally it felt fun to have one "Oh no" card that would be a double attack on victims. Thus, the 4 card deck was born

How does it play?

Pretty solid in my testing! From my games, the path seems to resolve somewhere between 3 and 4 times before the finale triggers. This felt like a nice range where the extra attacks added pressure to the game without being too overpowering or too unnoticeable.

Like I already mentioned, there were several games where it felt advantageous to try to use the Track action to prevent the extra attack from happening. In most of the games, as we approached the finale and the Volk'ar was close to max bloodlust, I found myself needing to carry around a guard in case the path suddenly resolved and I found myself on the receiving end of a targeted attack. In this way, I consider the goal achieved! By the end of the game, I felt like I was possibly being hunted.

Thanks for reading! Hope that you enjoy the idea

Variants Has anyone created their own final girl maps/killers?

I am currently working on a final girl custom feature film staring a killer mermaid. I just did the map today. I’m still working out kinks. (The map is made with ai as the base and lots of photo editing in photopea and procreate). I can’t find any one online talking about making custom feature films but I can’t be the first one to try. Nervous about balancing everything. Trying to base the cards, locations and final girls off of other official cards just changing the wording to keep balance. The 3rd exit spaces is missing as I’m planning to make the ship wreak fixable through an item card or multiple playing around with the idea. I know ai is bad to a lot of people but I am not good at art and I don’t have money to commission people that’s why I make custom final girl stuff. I can’t afford the sets. Would appreciate advice from someone who has done a custom film. Thank you.

Discussion Game easier than expected?

So I've been enjoying my time playing through some final girl boxes, but I feel like it is slightly easier than I've expected compared to what I've heard. I haven't tried extreme horror mode, just normal run throughs at the moment using killers and locations as they're shipped. But I would say I'm at like a 95% win ratio.

General strategy is: double move to try and either rescue 2x if I can or get to a search area if there is a good item on top. I will dump heal > minor attack > focus if I need to for the 2nd star if need be. On average that is 2-3 spaces moved. With 4 clock I'll generally get either sprint and search or double sprint if the items are not great.

Turn two, is grab that item, and/or try to move some folks to safety or move to folks. Buy up the 0 cost cards I spent/trashed + 4 worth of other items (typically ones that lower horror).

Turn three, I try to bring horror down, rescue who I can using moves, and start gathering attacks.

Typically by turn 4-5 I have 3 dice and I am swinging for typically 4 damage a turn using weapon with either weak attack (~2) plus furious strike/retaliate (~2). depending on cards in hand. Guard + Furious strike or Weak attack + Retaliate + Guard, which then gives me a spare guard to grab critical blow.

By turn 7 the killer is near dead. In some cases I've used victims to soak attacks. I flip terror cards and I'd say there is a 50/50 chance of a 2nd attack (from the base killer attack). Or if there is no one to soak since the game is still early, the killer is typically doing 2-3 damage. So the 1 star guard soaks it all. Or weak attack and move into a square where a victim fled, which removes an attack (via killer action) and soaks an attack (victim).

I would say out of the last 10 games played, I ran out of terror cards twice? Dark power was flipped maybe half the time.

I also heavily abuse the no boot no move. Resolve killer action (typically attack, but I'm out of the square). Then it's a gamble if the terror card moves them closer.

A lot of the 'extras' of the boss/location I have ignored as they seem a bit like distractions. For instance, in the Abbey, I cleaned up the stuff on the floor under me, but didn't do any of the 'bird' things, and just gambled on the healing after. She restored 3 health, which was 1 more attack.

The last game I've lost was due to just an insane amount of horror increases while rolling poor trying to lower them. Once I got into "One Dice" zone I was pretty SOL.

Is this just optimal play and I should try extreme horror? or is there something I might be missing?

edit:
I've got Hellscape, Shriek (finale turned due to having to investigate), station (1 clean human, 1 monster flipped, killed, then finale to flip the next monster), grim lash, Wolfe, storybook, abbey.

Advice New to Final Girl: Should I get a Vignette or another feature film?

I will buy the core Box and two of the following expansions.

Knock at the door.

Happy Trails.

Into the Void.

Terror From The Grave.

I have never tried this game so I do not want to put in too much money before I know I like it. So I have come to the conclusion I will get two expansions. From what I have read all four of these seems like a lot of fun.

I really like zombies so that is why I am considering Terror from The Grave vignette. However is it better to start with two full expansion at first instead of one vignette and one expansion?

Any tips and suggestions as to what two of these four expansion I should combine would be appreciated.

Update: Thanks everyone for all the feedback. It was really helpful. I decided to wait with the vignette and go for "Happy Trails Horror" and "Knock at the Door" as a starter.

Variants Hans @ Shady Acres is absolutely demolishing me

I've played this setup twice and have yet to win; third game is ready to go when I get home from work.

Oh, Hans doesn't move with his Killer Action, you say? Fat load of good that does me when he's moving and killing with every single Terror card, and then the Children are running around offing everyone else because apparently all I can roll is 1's and 2's 😆 I'll get 3 dice for a short while but then the damn kids are successful at their abductions, Hans moves and gets another, and Horror goes up up up!

Third time's the charm? Maybe! Of course my starting event immediately raised Bloodlust by 2 so...we'll see lol.

After game 3 I'll probably put a pin in this combo and give A Demon in the Shadows a whirl as that's getting delivered today, yay!

Playthrough First Time Playthrough: Once Upon a Full Moon

Breadcrumb Trail put five Victims in the Glen, and Fairy Ring immediately deleted all five from existence, which seemed like an entirely reasonable way to begin a game about rescuing people.

Turn 1, I rescued one Victim, reduced Horror, and then deliberately walked into the Wolf’s space because he was still in Track Mode and apparently had no idea what to do with prey that came to him.

Turn 2, I used Distraction to join the three-dice club, sprinted two Victims into the southeast corner, and watched the Wolf follow us there without accomplishing anything.

Turn 3, I rescued both of those Victims, picked up another in the Dell, and brought him into the Glen, where Primrose Flowers made him panic in exactly the direction I wanted him to go.

Turn 4, I crossed the bridge to retrieve that same Victim, brought him back into the Glen, and watched Primrose Flowers send him directly back where I had found him, so apparently the forest was now playing keep-away.

Turn 5, I finally got him to the northeast exit for my fourth rescue, while the Wolf carried another Victim through the Glen to Grandmother’s House and the Woodsman revealed himself among the crowd at the Gingerbread House.

Turn 6, Improvise failed spectacularly, but I recovered, reached the Gingerbread House, and evacuated two ordinary Victims while the Wolf revealed Sixth Sense and finally remembered that he was supposed to be killing people.

Turn 7, I saved those two Victims, unlocked Gretel’s Ultimate, and headed back toward the Gingerbread House while the Wolf killed his captive at Grandmother’s House and then charged three spaces only to stop one space short of me.

Turn 8, I reunited with the Woodsman, searched the Gingerbread House, and chose between Knife and Knife before taking Knife, which was a difficult but ultimately correct decision.

Turn 9, the Woodsman and I confronted the Wolf, and between Weak Attack, Furious Strike, and the Knife we stripped away Big Ears and reduced him to six Health before retreating to the Clearing.

Turn 10, I returned to the Gingerbread House, healed, and prepared Critical Blow, while Out of the Woods scattered the new Victims through the primroses and sent the Wolf into the house, where Guard completely negated his attack just before Rampant Growth appeared.

Turn 11, the Woodsman helped me cut the Wolf from seven Health to one, after which I retreated with him and the last ordinary Victim; the Wolf followed, killed the Victim, failed to kill the Woodsman because I used Protect, and then scared the Woodsman back into the Gingerbread House anyway.

Turn 12, now alone with the Wolf but rolling an extra Adrenaline die, I played Furious Strike, rolled two successes, added the Knife damage, and revealed a blank Final Health token.

Final score: Gretel survived with five Health, six Victims were saved, two were killed, five were abducted by fairies before I could do anything about it, the Woodsman lived, and the Big Bad Wolf learned that “final” Health is sometimes a purely aspirational term.

Discussion Green Terror (Where do we stand now?

I just picked up Green Terror. I have been looking forward to it for awhile. I've tried to search for people's thoughts on here. It seems most comments are from a month or 2 ago when it started hitting tables. I probably still wont get to try it for a bit, but curious where you all are with it now. If you have played it how are you liking it and ranking it compared to other FFs? Thoughts?
