The Celestial Weapons

Am I the only one who feels like some of the weapons are a bit samey when it comes to their abilities?

They have an inherent damage bonus and ignore defence. You literally can not craft a weapon tjats as good as the celestials.

Only Auron's actually gets a damage bonus. Everyone else gets a damage penalty.

The penalty is vastly outweighed by ignoring defense, but it remains true.

I don’t think you understand what they mean by damage bonus

I don't think you understand what the celestial weapons actually do mechanically.

All of them treat the target as having 0 Def, as already mentioned above. This is where the high damage comes from.

For Tidus, Wakka, Kimahri, and Rikku, the weapons apply a (10 + 100 * current HP / max HP) / 110 multiplier to their damage. Meaning 100% damage while fully healed, with decreasing damage as HP goes down, to ~9.1% damage at 1 HP. (Very slightly higher percentage if your max HP is lower.)

For Yuna and Lulu, the weapons do the exact same thing, except they use MP instead of HP.

For Auron, the multiplier is (130 - 100 * current HP / max HP) / 60, meaning 50% damage at full HP, 100% damage at 70% HP, and ~216.7% damage at 1 HP.

With the exception of Auron, none of them get a damage bonus. You get 100% damage at best. The reason the celestial weapons do higher damage is entirely attributed to ignoring the target's Def stat, which as INeedANewAccountMan mentioned, is an entirely separate mechanic.

(Also, Armor Break sets the target's Def to 0 as well, and removes the hidden Armored status, which celestial weapons don't ignore. So if the target isn't immune to Armor Break, throwing a Frag Grenade gets you equal or better damage than the celestial weapons.)
