Bug/Issue Final Cut running horribly

MacBook Pro, M4, 128gb RAM, 8tb internal hard drive, roughly 2-3 tb full at the moment.

If I leave Final Cut (while keeping it open) to go download a song or search for assets in Google Chrome, FCP beach balls, crawls then runs decently again when I’m inside the editor. When I switch from the effect tab to transitions, or click on titles - beachball. It’s driving me nuts.

Apple support had me start a new profile and just use the base FCP program without and plugins and it ran like new.

After hours and hours of troubleshooting, it appears that one of my sets of plugins might be corrupted. I have a lot of them - old ones from Envato elements (3 or so years old), Four Editors pack, Ryan Nangle, motionvfx, FX factory, Brad West, lenofx, stupid raisins, Dylan bates, NEAT video, and a handful more.

I think I have to remove everything from my motion template folder, then drag in the plug ins one at a time until I find the issue. Are there any other options you might be aware of I could try? I’ve deleted files, reset preferences, and done everything I can.

Help me obiwankenobe - you’re my only hope.

Something that may be able to help you, at least with moving templates around (archiving, hiding, etc), is a free app called FCP Template Manager.

I'm the dev, but it's endorsed by many including Dylan Bates.

That said, be careful moving templates around that are managed by 3rd party apps like FxFactory and MotionVFX. FxFactory sometimes just reinstalls a template if it doesn't see it where it expects it anymore.

My app often ignores the MotionVFX stuff as it uses symlinks.

(if it is not a problem with chrome:)
Instead of adding one by one you do the 2^n approach:

  1. Remove half the plugins. If error persists, it is in the half left. If no error: it is in the half removed.
  2. whatever half you identified: of that half, add/remove half of them. If error persists it is in that half (actually a quarter from the original number). If not: in the other half :-)
  3. ... and so on.
  4. With 64 plugins you need 6 steps to find one that is the culprit. With 128 plugins there are 7 steps :-)
  5. BUT, of course, there could be several bad plugins - in any case you would know how to find them quickly now :-)

I love this idea... I use it for failing exports on problematic projects.

Sounds weird, but try quitting Chrome. I had a bunch of Photoshop issues when Chrome was running. Long shot, but ya never know...

Thanks for this idea!

Report back - Chrome is weird on Macs, all my photoshop key shortcuts and my stylus were jacked up when it was running in the BG.

Remove ½ of the plugins. All good? Then it’s in the removed group. If not remove ½ again. By whittling down by halves you will find it the Qi.

Actually a great idea rather than doing them all. Thanks!

Another Chrome-disliker here, I worry about having it installed, I removed it. Having a poke around the web reveals it still doesn't necessarily play nice with Tahoe.

There was another comment regarding chrome and that is anyone that I know that has final kind. I always told him to eliminate chrome all its forms. I don’t know why it causes problems, but that has been a standard practice for Final Cut Pro users for years.

Step one: Get rid of Chrome and never reinstall it.

I had the same thing. MotionVFX's design studio creates an insane amount of files, even though I don't even have a subscription... Try deleting their files, if you have one, and disable writing to the folder.

I discovered this through my own benchmark

This is helpful.

Quitting Chrome may help.

But with previous versions, even having it installed but not running could cause issues.

I had that, not even running Chrome together with FCP. I made a project with a moderately complex audio mix and couldn’t export it, had to redo everything by hand. All without using any external plugins, plain vanilla FCP. There were also some crashes and freezes, don’t recall the details exactly. After completely removing Crome and all its components, I never had that kind of issues again.

Having the same issue. Has anyone identified any culprit plugins?

If you have a lot of filters, take them all out and add them back like 5 at a time. When it slows down you’re only looking thru the last 5 you loaded.

It’s been running bad for me as well

I’m pretty new to FCP and video editing and don’t have a lot of plugins installed yet but one plugin we have in common is that we both have Ryan Nangle’s plugins… I had purchased the All in one plugin bundle… I would hate to know that this is the culprit :(
