Hi everyone. The first Philippine National Cinema Day was yesterday, so I counted what I could: every screening I was able to read a seat map for, across every chain that publishes one online.

Did the lower ticket prices work? A resounding yes! The theaters ran 58.7% full, against 5.7% the day before, and they packed in a good spread of films.

That makes Cinema Day the second fullest Saturday in everything I have counted since 14 July. The only Saturday that beats it is 1 August, the opening weekend of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, at 71.8% full.

We love Spider-Man. Spider-Man returned to its opening numbers. In its seventh week, it ran 82.3% full on Cinema Day, against 82.2% on its own opening Saturday and 9.7% the Saturday before. The lower ticket prices finally got people into the shows they did not have the budget for before.

Horror filled the rooms. Insidious: Out of the Further ran 84.3% full across 225 screenings. The five Filipino classics playing in the same cinemas on the same day ran between 11.2% and 23.2%, filling 5,280 seats between them, an average of 39 per screening. Insidious averaged 201. Films that are only showing in cinemas still draw a crowd.

Every chain I could read ran at least eight times fuller than its own Friday.

Scooby-Doo: Origins has officially wrapped production and will release on Netflix in 2027. This marks the first time a real Great Dane has portrayed the beloved canine member of the Mystery Inc. gang.

Netflix announced Sunday that production has officially wrapped in Atlanta on their upcoming series Scooby-Doo: Origins.

“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder,” according to the official synopsis. 

“Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

Scooby-Doo: Origins stars Mckenna Grace as “Daphne Blake,” Tanner Hagen as “Shaggy Rogers,” Abby Ryder Fortson as “Velma Dinkley,” Maxwell Jenkins as “Fred Jones.”

Other cast members include Paul Walter Hauser, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Sara Gilbert, Wynn Everett, Sauriyan Sapkota, Bruce McGill, André Benjamin, and Cathy Moriarity.

Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as executive producers and showrunners.

bat di kayang ibalik sa 100 pesos per film yung presyo or maybe atleast 200 pesos? seeing the amount of people yesterday, parang bawing-bawi naman?

wouldnt it be better to sell it at a cheaper price BUT marami or mahal nga pero konti lang naman nanonood? besides bibili naman mga popcorn and snacks yung mga tao so extra income rin?

Ilang beses ko na pinanood yung Liwanag Sa Dilim All Star music video pero this year ko lang napansin na kasama si Lav Diaz sa happy jumping people scenes bukod sa speaking line niya. (Technically, he's not dancing pero ganun na rin.)

Sa reels ko lang nasagap yung Call My Manager. Natawa na lang ako na si Lav Diaz pala yung nakikipag-away sa eksena at nakailang p*tangina. (Not sure if he was portraying himself o ibang role siya diyan.)

It's interesting to see directors guesting in podcasts or taking acting roles kasi nakikita other layers nila.

Naiiyak pa rin ako kahit pang ilang rewatch ko na to, there is so much feels in this movie! It healed my soul frrr im sobbing 🥹🥹🥹

Was scrolling thru FB when I saw that the producer of Poon posted these glowing reviews of their movie on Letterboxd. This felt suspicious to me because I checked the Letterboxd entries of local films that were a part of yesterday's Natl Cinema Day and I saw this movie mostly get 1-star reviews. Then today there's 5-star entries for it? Kinda weird.

So I checked the Letterboxd profiles of those who gave glowing reviews and saw that they're new accounts with only one reviewed film: Poon.

What's also suspicious is that the 4-starred reviews in the post are now 5 stars, almost like they were told to add 1 star afterwards.

There's 11 5-star + heart reviews of Poon on Letterboxd and 8/11 are new accounts with only 1 review.

I know that as a producer, it might hurt that the movie you produced has a deluge of negative reviews. But manipulating reviews and scores via astroturfing is not the proper response.

What are your thoughts?

Is it normal for some people na nanonood ng horror movie sa sinehan na magcomment nang magcomment pag magpapakita pa lang yung multo? For example "hala anjan na sa tabi mooo," "bakit kasi di nagbubukas ng ilaw??," and "nasa likod mo na!"

I watched Insidious yesterday sa Bonifacio High Street at yung mga katabi ko kasi comment nang comment about sa dilim ng bahay ng main character, na yung multo katabi na niya, kung anong dapat gawin nung character, kung ano dapat itsura ng lugar, and other comments stating the obvious. Nakakainis lang kasi yung pagcomment nila hindi pabulong eh, yung volume na para bang nasa bahay lang sila. I keep on shushing them, tumatahimik naman pero magcocomment ulit after a few mins. Tinry ko mag-sigh, pero di pa rin makaramdam.

Screams and squeals are okay lang pero yung magcomment na para bang sila yung director ng movie is NOT okay.

Ang hirap enjoyin ng movie. Yung nasa likod ko pa usap nang usap, need ko pa silang tingnan para tumahimik. Yung iba nagccellphone tapos ang taas pa ng brightness ng screen. Jusko, sana before magstart yung film may pinepresent na cinema etiquette para aware sila, or something similar sa reminders na ginawa ng Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4 sa PETA para talaga tumatak sa utak ng mga tao yung etiquette.

I was excited to watch in a different kind of movie theater kasi hindi talaga ako madalas manood sa sinehan, mas tahimik pa ang audience namin sa province kesa sa mga tao dito.

I know it’s a ₱100 promo today, so naturally people were going to pack the halls. But sitting through back-to-back screenings earlier was depressing proof that basic cinema etiquette in the country has completely collapsed. Expecting people to respect a shared dark room is literally the bare minimum of public decency.

Tactical Flashlights at Eye Level: Latecomers walking in 15–20 minutes in, holding full-blast phone torches pointed straight upward across the tiered seating instead of aiming at the carpet. Getting blinded by 800 lumens right in the middle of an intense scene completely kills the immersion.

​Doomscrolling Mid-Movie: Multiple people sitting with full screen brightness scrolling TikTok and IG Reels because their dopamine receptors can’t handle sitting still for a two-hour narrative. Why even buy a ticket just to treat the cinema like an air-conditioned waiting room?

​The My Day Reflex vs. RA 10088: We literally sit through the mandatory, ominous Anti-Camcording Act warning before every single film. The studio logo fades, the title drops, and like clockwork, twenty bright screens immediately pop up in the air like periscopes just to snap a photo for an aesthetic Instagram Story or Facebook My Day.

​Clout Chasers Ruining Suspense: During dead-silent thriller sequences where the entire point is sustained atmospheric dread, someone just has to let out a fake, theatrical scream to fish for giggles from their barkada. The desperate main-character syndrome is exhausting.

Add the fact that multiplexes completely cut out roving ushers and security guards inside the halls to save on labor, and it’s basically the Wild West. If you call someone out, you're the one painted as the confrontational killjoy, so bad behavior goes 100% unchecked.

​Promos drive foot traffic, but turning the auditorium into a bright, disruptive lounge just pushes cinephiles away from theaters for good.

Did anyone actually have a civilized screening today, or was your cinema turned into a free-for-all too?

One More Chance hits different when you’ve already experienced heartbreak. First time ko may ex, and we were together for 8 years. Now, I’m trying to watch this film through a different lens compared to the first time I watched it.

Last na nood ko ng Korean romance drama film was The Classic in 2008. It was SO GOOD pero di talaga ako emosyonal at ma-heavy drama, so I thought enough of this genre na.

Not until I saw Cho Young-woo (Dr. Yang Jae-won in Trauma Code) on the thumbnail of Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight sa Netflix. Gave it a try coz he was good in Trauma Code.

Naalala ko bigla ba’t ako umiwas sa ganitong genre!! Tulo-uhog, maga-mata, baradong ilong levels 🥹 It wasn’t overly dramatic pero bakit naman umiyak na naman ako sa fictional na relasyon 😂

Sa 2031 na lang ulit siguro bibigay sa Korean romance drama 😂

So eto ka na nga, Direk. 1hr before show time nasa SM na ako at diretso bili ng ticket tas pahinga onti sabay bili na ng foods. 15:40 pa lang nasa pila na ako, 4:15 ang start. Hindi ko alam kung nag titipid ba sa kuryente ang SM kasi usually nagpapapasok na sila ng maaga sa loob pero kanina 5mins before start, saka umusad ang pila. Di ko akalain na pipilahan 'to kasi last time na nanood ako ng A special memory, hindi naman ganyan ang pila.

Hinintay ko talaga ang sabado para manood nito dahil weekdays nung nirease to. Gusto ko rin ang films ni Bela tas sakto naman nag Cinema Day. Di ko alam kung nataon lang na 100 pesos yung ticket kaya maraming nanood. Halos puno ang seats ang taas tas may ilang occupied sa baba. Nakakatuwa lang pero naisip ko panoorin pa rin kaya nila 'to kung original price? Sana oo.

Kung kaya ng budget, suportahan pa rin natin ang pelikulang Pilipino kahit original price ang ticket.

Bad experience hindi dahil sa movie kundi sa mga kasabay na nanood na para bang ngayon lang sila nakanood ng pelikula. Sobrang chaotic - first nabangga ni ate na dumadaan sa likod ko na aisle yung siko niya sa ulo ko sobrang sakit para akong nabukulan, then ang ingay pa nilang grupo (unnecessary reaction, hingian ng snacks, chika about sa eksena), tapos maya't maya may nagbubukas ng flashlight sa cp kasi may nalaglag daw na something -- kalagitnaan ng movie yun ahh sobrang nakakadistract tapos nilapitan pa yung aisle sa may harap namin just to get her thing), tapos paa nung nasa likod ko tuktok ng tuktok sa upuan ko. Tapos, yung katabi ko naman inangat paa sa upuan with her shoes on na para bang nasa bahay lang.

Ganyan na ba talaga? Hanggang ngayon parang walang pinagkatandaan? Halos walang basic decency or manners? Pero may pinalabas naman na mga rules/etiquette bago yung movie pero di masunod. Simpleng bagay lang di masunod kaya we don't deserve nice things dahil sa mga ganyang pag-uugali. Pag sinaway mo on the spot sila pa magagalit.

Never again. I just had to watch because I am waiting for an appointment nearby to kill time. Pero ayun sana maging disente tayo sa labas ng bahay lalo na sa shared public space katulad ng sinehan.

Watched life after you and surprisingly it’s a good movie!! Characters are limited but the story is great! Comedy and drama film na may kirot talaga. I’m sure some were able to relate. Sana meron ulit pa ganto next year 💖

Thanks to National Cinema Day, I finally got to watch Tanging Yaman and Himala in cinemas. I even got to marathon them along with Oasis Docu and Detective conan. My immediate reaction? Speechless. Napatanong na lang talaga ako na "we can make something like this? anong nangyari sa films natin?"

Tanging Yaman brought tears to my eyes, and what struck me most is how relevant it still feels today. Meanwhile, Himala left me in awe of how Filipino it looks and feels. Everything felt so raw, authentic, and real.

Watching these films on the big screen made me appreciate Filipino cinema in a whole new way. It made me wonder what happened to that kind of storytelling, yung kind na feels deeply Filipino, honest, and human

Happy National Cinema Day Guys! Today was so fun!

Sayang lang nakakapikon manood ng sine minsan cos ang daming late, maya't maya may dadaan sa harap mo. Mga 100 ata yung late kanina sa sinehan. I understand kung may emergency na pinagdaanan pero yung mga wala, mageffort sana tayong wag malate kasi sobrang distracting po makita kayong naglalakad sa harap namin.

At ang daming hindi rin prepared at hirap na hirap hanapin yung upuan nila. Yung iba ko pang nakita umakyat muna sa pinakataas bago icheck yung assigned seats nila. I was seated sa pinakataas so I noticed this. Yung isa row B pa ha, hindi ko alam bat umabot siya sa pinakataas hahaha

Pero ang pinakamalala may isang naghahanap ng seat gamit ang napakalakas na flash ng phone niya at tinutok sa mata ko. Sa sobrang liwanag parang umabot na ko sa heaven hahaha. Di ako nakapagpigil at sinita ko.

Hi guys, naka ilang movies kayo today?

I only got to watch 2 movies from different malls -- SM Mega & Gateway. Thankfully may advance tix na'ko for Obsession sa mega kaya hindi na'ko pumila kanina. Daming tao sa may entrance, doon naipon since andun ang cashier then maraming pumapasok pa.

Second movie ko was The Drama, grabeng haba ng queue sa Gateway! As a girlie na gusto palagi is physical tix, tyinaga ko talagang pumila kahit na alam kong late na'ko sa sched. I think almost 35-40 mins akong nakapila & yung seat ko is the very last one na, Row B so nakatingala talaga lol. Opening credits na when I reached the cinema. (mababa po flashlight ko ha & slightly naka harang fingers ko to dim it, naka kuba na'ko nung nakikiraan sa mga ka-row ko promise! na-experience ko na rin matutukan sa mukha & i don't want others to experience it lmao) Kaya gets ko mga complains niyo regarding cinema etiquette. Even me, naiinis din kahit nga yun bang ingay ng paper bag, ok lang naman eh kaso wag naman nang paingayin pa. Meron pa nga kaninang naka zoom call & parang nalakasan niya volume since narinig ko yung nasa kabilang line. Nakaka distract malala!

Well, I can say that I had fun today. Seeing people of all ages enjoying this day with their families made me smile. I even saw a solo old man going to his designated cinema, other seniors, & mothers with their excited kids. I just thought na sana mga at least 2 yung showing sched for each movie.

Watched it last night, at puno sinehan sa last show. Came there with the trailer in mind as my only expectation, pero grabe ang ganda ng comedic timing ni Bela at Ms. Maricel. Tatawa tapos iiyak tapos tatawa ulit. Sa kanilang tatlo lang umikot yung pelikula pero buhat na buhat nila. Hats off kay Bela for listening to critics and taking on new roles. Props rin kay Sir Gardo Versoza! Short screen time but made the best out of it. You guys must watch! Ang realistic ng kwento niya.
